Clear Help with Dialectical Behavior Therapy

This book was a good introduction to the concept of DBT, which is one approach to Cognitive Behavior therapy. As I had not really heard much about DBT, I was interested both in what it was and how it works … with the later amply demonstrated through personal anecdote of examples on how this helped the author. This overview highlights the four (4) main ideas behind DBT as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness to specifically address some of the author’s mental health struggles. To some extent, this book may come across a little as a personal catharsis for the author, but that would sell short the ability of this story to actually show how these concepts improved the author’s quality of life that comes into play once the author dives into the actual workbook sections of the book (and the accompanying 107 page pdf). Over all, this looks to be an excellent resource with clear, well organized exercises that could support an individuals effort to deal with a variety of mental health issues along WITH a qualified mental health professional.

Appreciate Different Aspects in Different Formats

I actually read and reviewed the book version of this some time ago, but I find I often take away something different from an audiobook, so I decided to check it out.

One problem I had with the book version was that I felt the author spent too much time discussing the various flavors of depression, its treatment, etc., before getting to the DBT part of the book; nearly a quarter of the book is about depression generalities. Interestingly, in audiobook format, that part didn't nearly feel so long, even though it is 40 pages in the book. However, I still didn't feel like the author integrated the depression aspects with the DBT part well. He didn't connect the dots about how the specific DBT exercises would help depression. In fact, much of it felt like a standard self-help book, not specifically about DBT or depression. That's not to say that the exercises aren't good or could be helpful for the right person. In fact, I think they're fairly decent. But they didn't quite say “DBT” to me or as something that would be helpful for depression. For instance, there's discussion about how to talk with people so that you can get what you need (like an afternoon off on short notice) without over-apologizing or appearing weak. Helpful life information, yes, but DBT or depression related? Not so much.

While called so, this didn’t feel like a true workbook, though it does have some well-done exercises and worksheets. It’s too text-heavy, especially at the beginning, not action-oriented enough to be a true workbook. Again, nothing remotely “workbook-y” happens until the book is already a quarter done. Once I got to them, though, I did like the worksheets and exercises, even if—as stated above—they weren’t truly DBT or about depression.

I found the subtitle of the book a little disturbing. As a registered nurse, I'm a little uncomfortable with an author calling a book "treatment" for what is a serious mental health condition. It also states that what is offered can soothe anxiety and provide skills to make you happy. That last part is too vague: what constitutes happiness? The answer is probably different for everyone.

I liked the audiobook's narrator; he has the perfect, soothing voice for a book like this. I liked how the author included a PDF with the audiobook at Audible. It isn't the entire book, which I prefer for non-fiction books. (Audiobooks are more expensive than eBooks, so include it with the audiobook!) What the one included contains is the book’s worksheets and exercises. It was nice to have those visual elements included with the audiobook.

I'm wondering if there was some way the author could have integrated the depression material within the DBT chapters, tightened up the information shared so it didn't take up so much space. For instance, I don’t think the book needed to go into as much detail as it did about standard depression treatments. Perhaps the author could have written a separate book just on depression 101. Not everything stated in the depression part of the book is essential for you to get the most out of the second part of the book.

Despite its drawbacks, the book contains concepts and exercises some may find helpful, even if they aren’t truly DBT or “treat” depression.

Just what I needed!

This book has been a game changer for me. I've been dealing with some pretty stressful events lately and these exercises has made such a difference. The breathing exercises has been particularly helpful with my anxiety. Great for listening during morning or evening commute or as you unwind after a long day at the office.
