Publisher's summary

Heal psychological wounds on your own.

Move on from the emotional trauma of your past: Contrary to what many people believe, we can recover from emotional trauma relatively quickly and completely on our own. Whether it's extreme trauma such as sexual abuse or the horrors of war, or less dramatic but, psychologically speaking, just as serious wounds involving shame and guilt, we don't need to spend years in intensive therapy to recover. Keep Pain in the Past explains a process that allows you to do most, if not all, of the recovery on your own.

Train yourself in psychological self-healing: While most people know what they can do on their own to treat physical ills, they don't realize that they can apply certain psychological principles to treat anxiety, depression, and many other conditions. Keep Pain in the Past will teach you the critical skill of treating psychological wounds on your own.

Treat yourself and heal old wounds: As much as people may suspect that some trauma from their past is affecting them negatively, they struggle to do anything about it. They take refuge in denial, avoidance, or addictions rather than grapple with long-ago emotional pain-because surfacing that pain hurts. Keep Pain in the Past will help you identify and face this pain and find closure on your own. Use Dr. Chris Cortman's easy-to-master method to remember, feel, express, release, and reframe the trauma that has been haunting you for years.

Learn from the success of others: Discover how Sheri, a 37-year-old attorney, recovered from panic attacks that seemed to come out of nowhere. Follow the journey of Mark, a 29-year-old army veteran who experienced the horror of war in Afghanistan. Explore how Melinda, a 42-year-old professor who struggled to sustain a romantic relationship, confronted her torturous childhood and found love that is still going strong after three years.

Helpful! But needs “trigger warning”

I found this book helpful and I very much liked the narration (I listened to the audiobook). That said, as it is a book likely to be read/listened to by those who’ve had a/many painful experience(s), some of the examples of the author’s patients’ stories are pretty heavy can trigger all sorts of things. I can’t stop thinking about one that was mentioned (girl in Vietnam) and may need some additional therapy sessions myself just to get over the mental picture of that story. This book NEEDS a “Trigger Warning”. Other than that, the book has helped me think about some experiences with a new perspective. (Hence, 5 stars Overall, 5 stars for Performance, and 4 stars for Story.)

BRILLIANT

This is exactly what I needed. Made so much sense. Once I allowed myself to feel the hurt, I was able to cry. I was in denial for so long that bitterness and hatred took over. It was always in my head and a horrible constant reminder on a daiy basis that I couldn't forget. Nothings forgotten but it doesn't hurt anymore. I don't hate and it doesn't torment me anymore. Just a memory that's fading.

Very helpful for anyone with ptsd or c-ptsd

I have read numerous books on trauma and overcoming anxiety, depression, ptsd, etc. This book was very helpful and I found it to be more useful than the body keeps score book and numerous others. I would definitely recommend this book! I’ve listened to hundreds of audible books; yet, this is the first time I write a review because I genuinely wish I listened to this sooner! 10/10

I’m cyberterrorized

My son, my mom, and I are the victims of cyber terror. It was unknown to me that my son and mom were also victims until a year ago. We are terrorized by a California government agency and wealthy tech hackers. I’ve gone to the police and FBI with no response. I’ve been blamed for my terror by stating its who I voted for or because of things in the past with my son. These hackers are reading this as I write this. My heart and health are failing from the stress. They attack snd reintroduce the same stress every day not only to me but my son as well. When I walk-into family law proceedings every person in their is breaking the law, as these same agencies have been for over 20 years. When I sought out a positive solution through non profit development, these terrorists used Facebook to create massive amounts of people to attack me. This was in response to a movement reaching out to the UN for human rights violations. Wealthy tech CEOs cackle at my pain and line the pockets of underlings who commit cyber terror. Federal agents benefit from illegal access of my private data because of my political preferences. I hate Jack Dorsey. I hate Elon Musk. I hate Mark Zuckerberg. I hate Gavin Newsom. I hate this current president and his administration. I hate YouTube. I hate the FBI. Everyday I do the work to create a positive space for myself only to be cyber terrorized by a contractor, a place of worship, a doctor, etc. at the hands of these terrorists. I hate my son’s attorneys for allowing him to be abused at school and terrorized by adults using him where he’s living. Im surrounded my psychopaths who love their psychopathy and call it libertarian. The abuse is meant to force me into a political belief, underlying the reason for the rise in libertarianism. We are in an authoritarian state and no matter how much you search for freedom, the collective will cyber terrorize and abuse you until you think and believe like them. Everyday Im told cyberterrorizing me is helpful to me while I physically feel the pain in my heart growing and my ability to concentrate and learn is slipping away. I hate all democrats who support this abuse. Your party is a party of psychopathic evil people who shouldn’t be around humans.

If you are the victim of slavery, oppression, or kidnapping this is a good book to understand your torturer.

My life doesn’t belong to any of you. So much for do no harm. I hope you all burn in hell.

Long for me

The book is useful. It was a little drawn out for my attention span. This is simply my experience. Don't let this review deter you from exploring.
