Publisher's Summary

In Love Is a Choice, best-selling doctors Robert Hemfelt, Frank Minirth, and Paul Meier walk you through their 10 proven stages to recovery from codependency that results from external circumstances. Humans are susceptible to codependency because of our sinful tendency to use defense mechanisms to fool ourselves. In codependent relationships, deceitful games are played, and important Christian principles are often taken out of context and abused. God wants us to have healthy relationships with a balance between being dependent and independent.

The doctors describe how the most effective means of overcoming codependent relationships is to establish or deepen a relationship with Christ himself. They describe the causes of codependency, pointing out the factors that perpetuate it, and lead listeners through their 10 stages of recovery.

Great book, horrible Performance

Sounds like a robot reading. Christopher’s voice is good, But there is a staccato cadence that makes it seem as though it must’ve been recorded and edited word by word. It is literally frustrating to listen to

Great content... Awful Narration

Great content with Christian msg. I'll admit that the Christian message may be distracting for those outside the faith but I can say that I was able to look past its insistence on the relationship with Jesus to see through to the heart of the message of the book. The narration was the worst I've heard on audible... It needed to be sped up in order to be listenable and was probably the largest hurdle to clear in order to listen and enjoy this book.
That said, I've been able to heal myself and many of my relationships as a result of the material covered in this book and would gladly recommend it to others trying to escape the clutches of codependency.

After my first listen

A very practical and astutely insightful book. For a Christian, it integrates scripture with integrity to the biblical context encouraging spiritual growth. It helps to bring God's word to life in its application to healing codependency. This book contains insight which everyone with an open mind will find helpful in regard to improving inter-personal relationships. It is a must read and durable reference book.

Great book. Terrible narration!

The content of the book is incredible, but the person reading it is worse than a computer voice. I had to order the paperback to read it again so I can really get the full impact of the author’s intentions.

An outstanding insight into family dynamic as it pertains to dependency and co-dependency. The authors hold the delicate balance of psychological modelsand Biblical truths.

Got what I needed

Although my family situation did not deal with alcoholism or drug addiction, major codependency issues were apparent that were very destructive and had significant impact on me as a child growing up and now as an adult. The book uses the alcohol and drug addiction treatment philosophy as their basis so for a large portion of the book I could not relate. However, when they spoke about codependency in general terms I began to connect and have many “AHA!” moments. I additionally had many revelations about myself and my parents that probably would not have happened if I didn’t read this book. So, despite having trouble connecting to the first 10-12 chapters of the book, I would still recommend it bc when it did connect, it was explosive (for me at least). I was able to acknowledge and let certain emotions or expectations go. For me, that was priceless!

Good read for all Relationships

I was hoping that this book delved more into the "how and why" love is a choice. However, I was finally able to get an understanding of the term "codependency". The author provided clear and descriptive examples of what codependency is, which I found it to be very informative.

I couldn’t make it more than 10 minutes

The concept of the book is great and I’m very interested to read this but the narrator is horrible. It’s like listening to Siri from our iPhones read the story. It’s ridiculously robotic. There is no expression nor fluency. It’s almost word for word reading, at times even syllables by syllables. I really wanted to like this but no way can I keep going. Going to order hardcopy and read myself.

good overall but religious oriented

the book overall is good but I didn't appreciate that pushes a lot a religious point of view and as a key portion for recovery.
