Publisher's summary

Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist, business consultant, and coach, author Mark Goulston combines his background with the latest scientific research to help listeners turn the "impossible" and "unreachable" people in their lives into allies, devoted customers, loyal colleagues, and lifetime friends. Just Listen provides simple but powerful techniques listeners can use to really get through to people.

You'll learn how to: make a powerful and positive first impression; listen effectively; make even a total stranger (potential client) feel understood; talk an angry or aggressive person away from an instinctual, unproductive reaction and toward a more rational mindset; and achieve buy-in - the linchpin of all persuasion, negotiation, and sales.

Whether they're coworkers, friends, strangers, or enemies, the first make-or-break step in persuading anyone to do anything is getting them to hear you out. With this groundbreaking audiobook, listeners will be able to master the fine but critical art of effective communication.

I am a raving fan after listening to this audio book.

The information in this book is golden. I want to listen to this over and over until everything in this book is deeply embedded and natural. I will be buying the hard copy of this book, recommending it, and reading Mark’s Other books. This book made me want to set down with the author over tea and just listen to him speak so I could soak up all his years of wisdom and knowledge.

a new take on listening

Giving practical "to do's" when it comes to listening well made this book well worth the read.

Power tools for better communication

I've read this book twice now. will read it again. it has so much simple yet deep insight that I wish I had found it as soon as it came out. It is well written, interesting and useful. If you want to improve your communication, and your life, this book may be the best place to begin!

Much needed

This was very helpful as I am striving to better my communication skills. I was particularly struck by the concept of mirror neurons, the desire to feel felt, and de-escalating from the reptilian brain hijack. I have now listened to the book three times and still pick up new techniques. It was well worth the time. And Authur Morey did an excellent job as narrator, delivering the information you would hope for from such a prominent expert in the field.

Insightful, considerate, and with great potential

I thoroughly enjoyed going through this book and Mark’s insights to reaching people. There are useful tools and steps that merit review and rereading of the book to understand and comprehend, but his voice is soothing and plain to understand, so you don’t mind it.

The reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5, is because this book outlines details on reaching people that may or may not work, and many of which depend on your own emotional intelligence and understanding of what Mark’s saying~ but then think of this book really as a beginner’s guide in a lot of ways. It does a splendid job introducing the topic, but there are a few times where I felt Mark could have dwelt more on the topic or instances he was discussing. In essence though, it’s a toolkit that requires actual experience to get good with, and is one you don’t mind learning.

I recommend the book regularly to anyone who’ll listen, and plan to go through it again myself. It’s material worth understanding~ but definitely do not make this your *only* book, but definitely do make this *one* of your books on empathy and listening. It’s worth every minute I spent listening to it, even if I wasn’t fully satisfied with certain details or lengths spent on scenarios. I’m a nitpicked and these were examples, so maybe it does indeed deserve a 5 to someone else, for me? A 4.5

Just listen to positively improve relationships!

I learned a lot of helpful things to lovingly work with a difficult child. There are many chapters that discuss sales & business techniques, but I still gleaned knowledge from those in working within relationships in general! We can all do better in our listening! Dr. Goulston has an incredible gift!

Well done

I really enjoyed this (kind of to my surprise). Unlike others like it, its so practical and useful. Dr G provides “how to”s that could come across as manipulative and redeems them with a healthy dose of warmth and wisdom

A surprisingly helpful and practical (“business self help”) book

As a 56 year old Physician Assistant with 25 years of experience, I’ve recently opened a self pay General medical practice. Listening on Audible for the 3rd time is even more enjoyable than the first time. I rank the information and quality of this book up with the classics such as “Seven Habits of Effective People” Nice job Dr. Goulston!! Arthur Murray’s soft spoken manner of narration increases listening to the book.
