Some good consulting examples and scenarios

First off, this book contains tons of useful advice given through scenarios, descriptions, rules, and examples. Information related to project organization, client relationship management, teamwork, and business protocols are all contained. The scenarios are usually of people making an error in one of the above categories. Basically, examples are given of situations with outcomes you don't want to find yourself in, with advice given on how to plan to avoid such circumstances. The items were fairly entertaining, and relevant to consulting and business.

The authors tone started as condescending and rude, as one would expect of the worst business dialogues. After realizing he had good information, the tone appeared to shift to sarcastic and smug. Finally, I realized the author was doomed to discuss negative settings and costly situations. From this knowledge, I viewed him more rationally judgmental and pragmatic than of the personality that seeks intangible faults to whine and pester about for an ego boost.

Finally, only one thing that kept me from rating this book a five was the lack of financial realism in some situations. The author constantly provided examples of consulting rates which would only be achievable by people with doctorate degrees. Sort of like the CEO's that are always criticized in the news. Contradictorily, most of the consulting situations provided required only a basic level of knowledge, and some indicate novice level trial and error. Either these people didn't really have the educational level assumed, or in some magical realm, people are grossly overpaying for simple tasks

Where does Consulting 101 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

well this book was a "just in time" style reading since i am just about to enter into this field after 13 years in banking industry

What does Jeff Porter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

i never heard of Jeff except in this book! honestly Jeff if your reading this - do more of the business and international trade books with your voice! its was just the right balance and the performance was immaculate for such a mundane subject matter such as consulting

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

yes i did! i was very very scared about how to approach the idea of business consulting with the big leagues! the sturdy performance here really gave me confidence!

this book had it all for a NEWBEE or an old dog learning new tricks! best part is the CASE STUDIES! i immediately related to all the stories since "as a client" for 13 years, it was refreshing to see the actual other side! and now i am like more ready to be part of that world! thanks Jeff Lew!

Good basic knowledge that makes you think

Decent book on a lot of common sense that is good to be reminded of. However the book is geared to those that want to work for larger firms as opposed to starting your own. Some of the points seem regurgitated and diminishes some of the benefit.

Nice for a consultant as an employee but not for an entrepreneur

This was a wonderful book for individuals who are looking to be employees or independent contractor consultant for a company and move up in their consulting career. It is not, however, for entrepreneurs in the consulting business. There was not much mentioned about sales, Closing deals, writing contracts and other things consulting managers need to know. It was however a good read for those who would like to be employees of consulting firms and move up in their consulting careers.

Well presented

Enjoyed listening to the book. The narrator was great and some of the information was helpful. The majority of the book, however, is about basic professionalism which I found to be common sensical.

Lessons Learned, don't let them scare you off

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I recommend this to anyone getting started or considering working as a consultant in a professional services firm. It covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time to make you more aware of what not to do and what to do to protect yourself, get along with people and advance your career.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

I would have preferred an American narrator to read this book. Jeff is Lew's buddy and a good reader and I understood why he was chosen. Notwithstanding that knowledge, Lew's U.S. vernacular spoken in Jeff's Australian accent (although neutral and modern) was distracting.

First time working with consultants?

My intent was to understand the best ways to work with the many consultants brought in by our C level leaders. Make the best out of the interface and set mutual expectations. To negotiate and collaborate better. This books serves as a great way to learn just that. Even though consulting may not be for you and you see yourself as a “lifer” you will inevitably have to work with consultants and survive.

Total Disappointment

Kept repeating tips and or suggestions
There were I don't know how many tips but when I stopped listening it was at number 65 and still going
All the tips were just a regurgitation of previous information which was of no use

Abysmal

The most basic, common sense advice you'll find. Remarkably, one of the tips was to "own a passport, in case you need to fly". It was at this point I put the book down.

Good for employed consultants

Is there anything you would change about this book?

It is a great overview of the role of a full time consultant employed by a larger corporation. If you are applying for such a role or working in such a role I can strongly recommend it. I however do some adhoc parttime consulting along my day job and found it less useful for would have liked more ideas / tips on finding consultancy assingments for independents or part time freelancers like myself. Still a lot of useful advice though so give it a go if you are interested in the field...

informative for a firm based consulting role

great information for anyone considering a consulting career.
this book is based on working with or for a consulting firm, although much os still relevant for freelance consulting there is not really anything about setting up or filling your sales pipeline. learning to write proposals is another book.
highly recommended for those new to the game as it definitely takes a certain personality to be successful in a high pressure environment, but fabulous for those like me who feel intellectually suffocated in a 9-5 cubicles job.
