Publisher's summary

Fated to destroy the world. Determined to save it.

My name is Xal, and I live in the dims - a walled prison where my people are kept by our cruel masters until we are needed to fight once more. One member of every family must answer The Call, for our blood bears the magic of a demonic god and all the terrible power that brings.

We march to war against the Fomori, an unstoppable army of giants and their behemoths. If we do not, then our families are put to death. The Hasrans use us as cannon fodder and worse. They used up my father, and he never came home. Die resisting. Die fighting. My choice isn’t if it happens, but rather how I sell my life.

If by some miracle I survive, I will be granted entrance to the Imperial Academy, where every noble house will vie to architect my end. They cannot allow the void-blooded to live. They cannot allow us to thrive or to gain more magic from the bodies of other dead gods. They cannot allow us to win. They fear the rise of another dreadlord. And they are right to fear. I will pull down an empire, and that is just the beginning.

Shattered Gods is based on the Magitech Chronicles Pen & Paper RPG and takes place in the same universe.

This was pretty good

This book was pretty good, I liked it. I will admit, shattered gods has its flaws and we're gonna talk about that in this review. it also has alot of stuff I like and we're gonna also talk about that too.

First off, the narrator is good. Ryan Burke has a good voice, he has alot of different voices, but some of them sound alike. That being said, I still like him. He's way above average, and he actually performed this book very well. I bet he'll do better in book 2, and I can't wait to see.

Now the characters, I like them. Chris fox writes them with depth, they all have personalities I like. I do think the mc makes some dumb choices in this book, but nothing that crazy. I also think there's some interactions that could've been handled better by the Mc. When we talk about the side characters, I think they're written really well. I don't particularly dislike any of them, and there is some character growth in the mix of it all.
The Mc is also written well, I mentioned he makes some dumb choices, but other than that I think he's pretty good, he actually grows as a character and he feels like a real person most of the time.

Now let's talk about the plot and the storyline. I do think this is where it gets tricky. I feel like some parts of the story are just... rushed... Then there are times where the story feels like it's written so well. I do feel like it got better as the story went on. At the start of the book is was iffy, and it felt rushed, but as the story went on I began to like it more and more. if I had to rate the plot it'd be a 4. I do think it'll be better in book 2, and I can also see if some people don't like the plot.
Now let's talk about the world building. it's actually pretty good, this is one of this books best qualities. it's really detailed, and the world is very unique. it's something I haven't listened to before, and I like it.

Now let's talk about the skill progression and the action.
I feel like the skill progression is just... lacking, that's the only way to put it. the mc barely learns any spells, I get that he's new to it all and he only has void magic for most of the book but still. There could've been more, I do think that there will he more in book 2, but right now it's lacking. i also don't really get this big gap in knowledge, he suppose to have a great mind that can understand things faster then others, and that's showed in this book. So why in the world is he not reading about stuff he supposed to know? he spent about a month in the academy and his knowledge has only grew a little. like I said, I do think it'll be better in book 2.
Now let's talk about the action, It's okay. in half of the fighting he's getting his butt handed to him, but there are some really good fighting scenes. It's also pretty detailed.

Overall I think this book has its flaws, but I do think it's worth it, I actually can't wait to read book 2. I can't wait to see how it plays out!!!. I do recommend this book, and I do rate it 5 stars.

I truly enjoyed it and found myself wanting the story to continue at the end. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

A surprisingly well written find!

There are progression clear progression elements but not video game mechanics and stat sheets. The world building is interesting and really fleshed out.

I have only a couple of minor gripes. The main character is a little OP. He always wins. At everything. It kinda kills the whole “he’s the underdog” vibe. While the story moves along at a good clip, I wish there’d be a little more description of the environment. It just lacks a bit of wonder. Finally, the bad guys/gals seem to give up really easily. It’s hard to really believe that enemies that powerful are also that powerless to stop the main character.

But overall the book is very good and the story arc is interesting enough to demand I continue on to the next book.

Female voice needed!

This is a really good book. So glad I took a chance on it.

The narrator is good however he cannot do female voices. Makes the entire book sound like it is males only. The fact that he does male voices actually makes the lack of ability to do female voices even more apparent.
