Publisher's Summary

When 17-year-old Kai is exposed as a female sorceress, a moonburner, she knows the punishment is death. Despite the odds against her, Kai escapes her fate and undertakes a harrowing journey to a land where moonburners are revered and trained as warriors.

But the moonburner citadel is not the place of refuge and learning that Kai imagined. The ongoing war against the male sorcerers, or sunburners, has led the citadel leadership down a dark path that could spell the end of all magic. Armed with a secret from her past and a handsome but dangerous ally in the sunburner prince, Kai may be the only one able to prevent the destruction of her people.

Excellent!!

This book absolutely blew me away! I did not expect to love this as much as I did.

I think the thing I loved about it the most was the world building. We have Moonburners and Sunburners, two factions who are constantly at war with each other. Our MC, Kai, is a Moonburner who has to hide herself as a boy because she lives with the Sunburners. Her parents knew that if they didn't hide her powers then she would be killed as a young girl. They tried to disguise them for as long as they could, but during an attack on their village, Kai is unmasked. She is exiled and left to rot in the desert, her father is killed and her mother is sent as a slave to a man who has always desired her. Kai has to find the will to survive and find her way to other moonburners, what follows is an extraordinary journey, one filled with lies, deception, secrets and so much more!!! Absolutely everything about the world building was phenomenal! The author has created a magical world that will immediately grab you and not let go.

The characters were amazing as well. Each were well written and developed and you can't help but root for them. Kai grew so much during the course of the book and I loved seeing that growth. She had so much to contend with and it was so nice to see her reach her full potential. I can't wait to read more in this world and of these characters! I also loved her seishen, Quitsu. He rocked!!

In all, this was a refreshing read. I think I was getting jaded with the amount of books that all felt the same, so after reading this unique and captivating read, it's restored my faith in YA. I love finding little gems like this and can't recommend it enough! I need book 2!!!

The narrator did an amazing job with Kai. She really got her and really brought her to life. I've listened to other books by this narrator, though not enough!! I will definitely check out more by her.

I received this for free via Audiobook boom. This in no way affected or influenced my thoughts.

Ying and Yang

TARGET AUDIENCE: Young adult, however appropriate for all ages. I was really drawn into this story from the beginning. I was immediately intrigued by the premise. Enough young romance to keep you engaged, but not overdone.

PROFANITY AND SEX: None, thank you. Appropriate for readers of all ages. I would be happy for my teenage or pre-teen children to read or listen to this book.

NARRATOR: I felt that the narrator did a great job at bringing this book to life. I was never lost, or confused as I listened to the book.

OVERALL: Lots of twists and turns, not another “canned” YA romance. I listened to this book in one sitting during a trip and loved it.

Nothing about this story I didn't love!

Awesome story! Kai is born into a society where girls who are Moonburners are killed at birth by the king of the Sunburners. Her parent’s manage to hide her out by pretending she’s a boy. That lasts until she’s 17 then it’s discovered she’s a Moonburner and her family is sentenced. Kai’s sent to the desert where she wanders one step away from death. While there her magical animal finds her. These animals are only for people of great power and importance which is discovered later in the story.
I loved the animals attached to the burners. It’s a nice touch. The story has an easy flow and even though I’d figured it out within the first few chapters I continued listening. I don’t usually do that but this story drew me in even though I wasn’t surprised by its events. That’s a huge plus for me.
The narrator Emma Lysy’s performance is excellent and fitting to the story and Kai’s character. There wasn’t anything about this story I didn’t love.

Great story with decent narration

I struggled getting into this audiobook, the narrator's tones and inflections were difficult to understand in the beginning. Over time I was able to adjust to the narrator and if the narrator were different I would have given this 5 stars. As it was, I had to open my ebook version to follow along quite a few times because I could barely hear the book because of the deeper tones the narrator tended to use. The story itself was wonderful and engaging, it was the only reason I stuck with the audiobook.

A good book for every fantasy lover collection

The story was intriguing. The characters interesting and different from each other. I really enjoyed listening to this and wish I was capable of making it justice.
The narrator voice seemed to be annoying at the beginning but it actually wasn’t. The only problem I had with the audio was that the names of the characters were difficult to understand.

Fantasy Adventure with Magic and a cute Fox

Kai has spent her whole life living as a boy and dying her hair so the silver of who she really is could be kept secret. In a world where female magic users, or Moonburners, are feared and killed at birth, Kai has never been given an opportunity to learn about the magic that should fill her. But when she exposes her secret to save an innocent, she condemns her parents to parents to death and herself to potential death in exile. Kai needs to find the strength to survive and conquer her magic to save not only herself but her people as well.

Ok, I will admit that I knew almost nothing about this book when I decided I needed to read it. All I knew was it has a gorgeous eye catching cover I needed (yes, I am a cover snob) and it was about magic. I was super happy with what I actually got in the story! This was an action packed Asian style world full of magic, conspiracies, hard truths, war and the best animals imaginable. Did I happen to mention I love animals? Well, a book where worthy magic users get an animal soul companion (seishen) they can speak to can't get much better than this.

My absolutely favorite thing about the story was Quitsu, the main character's seishen fox soulmate. He was mischievous, outgoing and so smart, the perfect foil to the quiet and thoughtful Kai who spent her whole life having to hide who she really was. While this story did have some dark and serious subject matter, once Quitsu was introduced he was able to lighten everything up for me, the break in dark I needed.

I actually did not realize this was a series until I finished the book and I looked up the author on Goodreads and saw there are more books to read. Based on the ending it technically could be a standalone with how all the big issues were wrapped up and the world seems to be mending for better, but I would love to read more set in this world. I have read a few Asian style mythology fiction stories recently and it made me realize that I love them and want more. The narrator did a great job bringing Kai to life and had so many different voices to make this an immersive experience for me. I really liked Moonburner and all the twists and surprised the author threw at me and I can't wait to jump into the next book.

Secrets, War, & Coming of Age

This was a magic filled start to the Moonburner Cycle series! Kai was supposed to die when she was born for being a Moonburner, but instead her parents raised and disguised her as a boy. Seventeen years later, her secret is out and she’s sentenced to death, but her story is just beginning. Kai has a strong, loyal, and guarded personality with an open mind that allowed her to not believe everything people told her. I really enjoyed her bond with Quitsu, her seishen and their journey throughout the book. Seishens are like spirit guides for worthy burners and Quitsu was devoted, humorous, snarky, and protective of Kai. I loved learning about Moonburners and Sunburners- their magic, history, prophecy, and the war that is going on. I’ve only read one other book with Moonburners before, but even though their were some similarities, it still felt pretty unique. This book was filled with action, betrayal, friends and foes, magic, and many secrets waiting to be revealed.
Emma did a fantastic job with this narration! It was easy to tell when she was narrating dialogue and inner thoughts. I thought she voiced Kai and her emotions perfectly and she kept me hooked until the very end.

Moonburner is a great book !

I really enjoyed the narrator's voice. Really credible voice for Kai, but also for the other female and male characters. Not all happy endings and a cliff hanger just after the credits.. I will look out for audio books to see how Kai gets on, especially with the last prophesy. I would also like to see how Kai and Hiro blossom into their relationship with some challenging dynamics.

interesting fantasy story

The story was good as well as world building. At least to me the main character was slightly irritating at some occasions 😅
Narration was well done. I might read rest of the books in the series as well🙂
