Zac was alone in the middle of the forest when the world changed...

The whole planet was introduced to the multiverse by an unfeeling System... or God. A universe where an endless number of races and civilizations fought for power and dominion.

Zac finds himself stuck in the wilderness surrounded by deadly beasts, demons, and worse. Alone, lost and without answers, he must find the means to survive and get stronger in this new cut-throat reality.

With only a hatchet for his weapon, he'll have to seek out his family before the world collapses... or die trying.

Excellent pacing, good plotting, and a talent for details make this an excellent book. It would easily be 5 stars if not for a great deal of difficulty writing about character relationships in a way that ever gets past surface details and some very weird moral choices like the protagonist not taking issue with a tyrant subordinate murdering citizens of his village simply for snooping around facilities that were made off-limits. This isn't uniformly bad and there are even moments when the main character feels remorse or at least questions the morality of situations, so we're just talking about a few mistakes that a good editor would (or should) catch, but it keeps this novel from earning 5 stars.

Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and was able to move past those moments because the rest of the novel is so great. It is my belief that fans of LitRPGs will easily be able to do so too - like a gorgeous scenic road through a land full of adventure. . . with a few bumps along the way.

A LitRPG Treat

This was one of the best litRPG I have ever listened too. I was so glad this didn't turn into an MC that end up losing his mind and becoming dumb as a rock or wanting to save everything and everyone or refusing to kill people. Give this a listen and you will love it if you like litRPG. I have no idea why those reviews are on here saying this isn't a litrpg, this is one of the best I have ever heard.

The first time I picked up this audiobook, I could not stand Zac and his interactions with Abby. I quit after 9 or so chapters because his attitude really grated on me. A few months later, after listening through He Who Fights With Monsters a second time, I was in the mood for a new book and nothing else caught my eye so I gave Defiance of the Fall a second chace, skipping all the chapters I had previously listened to. That worked wonders and I quickly became engrossed in the story. Zac's struggle to stay ahead of the curve after his initial lucky windfall leads to some really great encounters and also a lot of problems. All in all, it sets up a great foundation for the story moving forward.

Pavi's performance is excellent. Not much more to say about that.

Weak start but it gains steam quickly

The writing has many issues that should have been fixed by an editor. In fact, I almost gave up early on. Then all of a sudden things got so exciting that I didn't care about the writing quality any more. One of the best LitRPG series I've read.

Unexpectedly good
