Publisher's summary

When a relationship with a narcissist ends, the caretaking partner is often left confused, deeply hurt, and often still emotionally connected, while the narcissist seems to easily move on to the next relationship. Healing from a Narcissistic Relationship offers guidance about what to expect as the relationship unravels and how to cope with the fallout. It also helps the reader learn to truly disengage and move through the grief process.

Presenting techniques for healing and rebuilding self-esteem and self-confidence, this book offers a guide to developing emotional strength and encourages forgiveness and reconciliation with the past. It shows the reader how to increase emotional self-protections, quit caretaking in relationships, and become more independent and self-loving. Using real stories, Margalis Fjelstad offers a process of healing that can direct the reader away from former patterns of inequitable relationships and toward loving, caring connections that can truly grow healthfully and flourish. It shows that ending a relationship with a narcissist may be the best thing that ever happened.

Finally...

Although I’m an intelligent, caring, successful businesswoman, it took years for me to realize what I was dealing with in my abusive marriage. In my post-breakup research I read several books on narcissism to better understand what the h*ll just happened! All of these books were focused on the narcissist (not like that wasn’t how I’d been living as it was...) and I was tired of wasting more time on better understanding him when I needed to better understand me to heal and prevent this from happening again. This book FINALLY addressed how I could’ve fallen prey and what I can do to overcome the damage that was done. Whew... thank you.

life-changing!

if you are leaving or thinking about leaving or have left a narcissistic relationship, or if you're not even sure if you're in one, you need to read these books. I say these because this is the second one in a series that starts with a book called stop caretaking the borderline or narcissist. Read that first if you haven't left. If you have left, read this. I seriously cannot think of a single thing that helped more than this book. I have listened to it over and over and over again on Audible and it is like it is washing my brain from the years of emotional abuse.

Good follow up to the first book

I listened to the first book by this author, Stop Caretaking the Borderline or Narcissist and it really helped me see what kinda of relationships I tend to get myself stuck in.
My best friend (since childhood) is very hurtful and narcissistic and it's been a struggle to force myself to step back and not "caretake" as the author has put it.
This book is empowering. It's nothing that isn't within common sense, but having someone who has a) gone through the same thing and b) treated multiple caretakers and narcissists just really provides a nice perspective and makes you feel like you can truly take her advice and things might work out.
I'm not 100% finished this book yet, but I already love it!

This is the ammunition you need

I was in a long-term relationship with one. I didn't know it until I listened to this. Not only are the hallmarks of a narcissist easily and accessibly explained (and it's absolutely alarming how "textbook" it will all seem), but the healing process is mapped out. The tools you'll receive from this book are necessary—not just to reclaim your sanity, but your sense of self.

The lack of intimacy, the push/pull, the devaluing, and inevitable discarding. It was all here, but there is so much more. This book invites you to find your own instincts again, to love yourself for who you are, to celebrate your value and to respect yourself. It helps you understand the external barrage from the narcissist, helps you evaluate your own obsessive thoughts and panic reactions, and turns your focus to something much more essential and worthy (and something you've forgotten in all of this)—you.

I'm very early in the process, and I'm still a ball of fear, anxiety, and pain. But now I have hope that I can draw my own boundaries, trust my own gut, be my own caretaker, and find the other side.

Please give this book a chance. You deserve it.

took way too long to get to the healing part.

narrator great. substance not so great. i expected less about the horrors of narcissistic abuse and more about healing. as in a book about healing. as in the title. people who want to relive the soul and spirit and life crushing experience of narcissistic abuse will like most of this book. i wanted it all to be about healing. otherwise, just another trigger, but to each his or her own. i see the rehashing as inhibiting healing and recovery and keeping you stuck. no thanks. i returned the book.

Life Safing Book!!

I absolutely loved this book. It was so very helpful with helping me to deal with the recent break up of a marriage of only 6 months with a narcissist. Each chapter amazed me more snd more at how it spoke exactly to the details of how "he" was and the things I went through with him. I'm still amazed at all the details. I NEVER would have placed "him" in the category of a narcissist but I'm so glad I havr a name for it now! Makes me feel so much better that it wasn't my fault and no matter how hard I tried, and Lord knows I tried with everything I had, it would not have worked. He would have eventually left anyway.. This book helped me so much with the guilt of being a "caretaker." It even helped me understand myself as a "caretaker" which I've been all my life. I have shared details of this book with everyone I possibly can. I'm about to listen to it again and sure many more times over the years. I'm still amazed that there is an actual name to "HIS" madness. I only wish the author was closer to me for personal counseling. Again, thank you so much for writing this book and bringing it to Audible!! I'm on my way towards a better, promising future!! Blessings

A helpful way to intentify and rationalize them

I am so glad this title caught my eye because it has been so helpful in interpreting and understanding this behavioral trait in a lot of individuals that operate around the world. If you are searching for answers and don't want to give up hope just want to fix the problem you must be able to understand the full scope of what this behavior exhibits so you can rationalize staying or trying to manage this environment. If you don't want to feel like the bad guy but know there's something really wrong about the way your being treated that you try to believe that there's something your doing to provoke this toxic treatment.

Must read if are/were in such a relationship!!

I swear she was writing my life!! I could resonate with over 90% of the words in this book!! I couldn’t believe how much of my life was impacted by such dysfunction of another’s personality disorder. I knew something wasn’t right, I just couldn’t make sense of it until now. This book should mandatory for anyone who’s spouse is/was a narcissist!! You will understand your past life so much better and heal so much quicker!
