Publisher's Summary

A few common principles drive performance, regardless of the field or the task at hand. Whether someone is trying to qualify for the Olympics, break ground in mathematical theory or craft an artistic masterpiece, many of the practices that lead to great success are the same. In Peak Performance, Brad Stulberg, a former McKinsey and Company consultant and journalist who covers health and the science of human performance, and Steve Magness, a performance scientist and coach of Olympic athletes, team up to demystify these practices and demonstrate how everyone can achieve their best.

The first book of its kind, Peak Performance combines the inspiring stories of top performers across a range of capabilities - from athletic, to intellectual, to artistic - with the latest scientific insights into the cognitive and neurochemical factors that drive performance in all domains. In doing so, Peak Performance uncovers new linkages that hold promise as performance enhancers but have been overlooked in our traditionally-siloed ways of thinking. The result is a life-changing book in which listeners will learn how to enhance their performance via myriad ways including: optimally alternating between periods of intense work and rest; developing and harnessing the power of a self-transcending purpose; and priming the body and mind for enhanced productivity.

In revealing the science of great performance and the stories of great performers across a wide range of capabilities, Peak Performance uncovers the secrets of success, and coaches listeners on how to use them. If you want to take your game to the next level, whatever "your game" may be, Peak Performance will teach you how.

Everything in this book is valuable

As someone who is becoming disillusioned with most things self-help, I was pleasantly blown away here. This book offers to the point, scientifically backed insight into getting the most out of yourself and contribute to society in a healthy way. Very good narration does the material justice. Totally worth a credit.

Took Stephen Covey's 7 Habits to the next level

I really enjoyed this book! It took Stephen Covey's 7 Habits to the next level by helping you simplify your mission statement and put it into action through suggestions and good examples. I especially liked the suggestion to make your goals and life purposes focused on serving others. There were many other pearls as well. Enjoy the read and thank you Marty Vaughn for recommending it!

pulling performance ideas from many sources

I listened to the audio book, which I enjoyed. the authors did a great job of pulling performance-enhancing concepts from many disciplines and weaving then together well...the effect was to show different dimensions of an idea (e.g., how rest affects performance). this format could have been disorienting but was well-executed.

I particularly liked the summaries at the end of each chapter and the book itself; these helped to reinforce the practical steps to peak performance and kept the book from being an abstract thought-piece

Good starter to increase motivation & performance

The method for enhancing performance is stress and rest. Whether it's a mental or physical challenge, go outside your comfort zone and work through the difficulty, followed by a day of easy workout and/or rest depending on how hard you worked out. Expect failures, which is immediate feedback on what doesn't work. Fix or adjust what you're doing to perform at a higher level. The book is filled with a lot of other techniques to increase motivation and performance, such as reframing an anxious situation to an exciting new challenge.

Really Enjoyed It!

Was originally a bit skeptical just by the title and some of the claims. However, I was very pleasantly surprised by this book!

If you are someone who is motivated and enjoys fully committing to an objective, but gets overwhelmed or burnt out this book is for you! They add clarity to the (stress + rest = growth) formula in a way I haven't heard before. They really hammer home this concept and, after reading this book, righteously so.

Love how they also incorporate the most recent science behind the psychology of performance and how to train your brain to think in a way that supports it. Well done!

Nothing new

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book is an overview of others' research. If you're familiar with the likes of Kelly McGonigal, Anders Ericsson, Carol Dweck, Angela Duckworth, Benedict Carey, Thomas M. Sterner etc. then you will be disappointed. If you're not familiar with them then this is an OK summary of some of their popular ideas although I would recommend reading the original works of the above researchers/writers.

Has Peak Performance turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. But I would research who the author is more diligently.

Loved it. As a musician, it reminds me of my days preparing for my final undergraduate recital and what kept me motivated.

Great.

I really enjoyed this book as it seemed to pull together information taken from other audio books I have already listened to, such as Peak by Anders Ericsson, and gives you a great base plan to start on the journey to peak performance. Recommended.

Nice collection of performance ideas

This pretty good, it brings together a lot of different ideas. If you read about this stuff you may have come across the material before. The way the book is written to is quite nice they re-enforce each chapters points throughout the book so they really stays in your memory. One caveat the social psychology stuff about ego depletion is no longer excepted as true. Social psychology is undergoing replication crisis in regards to scientific works. There maybe some ideas within the ego depletion research work, that is still true, just beware of this fact. These issues will ultimately improve the methods used in social psychology research

Waste of time and money

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

In order to achieve high performance in a clever way, you should get enough sleep, stay away from noisy urban areas and do some meditation or have walk, preferably in nature. Ah, and remember to have regular breaks.

If you've never ever heard of any of these tips, then this book is for you. Otherwise, just don't bother with this audiobook.

What will your next listen be?

Ancient Greek philosophers already had the body and mind balance figured out so I think I'll go for that.

What about Christopher Lane’s performance did you like?

Actually, the performance was the only reason I tried several times to continue with this audiobook. I really enjoyed his pace, tone of his voice and intonation. I really had an impression that he understands what he is reading. Hence the top note for the performance.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Peak Performance?

The whole book is just nonsense. Don't expect to learn anything from it. I mean, you really want to make money on giving advise like "Don't use drug stimulants, better turn to meditation"?

Good ideas but quite verbose.

Really good book with plenty of good suggestions for improving performance quality and avoiding overworkbut there is a tendency to labour points.

Worth a listen once but I'll probably only revisit with a summariser or the last few chapters.
