Show Up and Let Yourself be Seen

Is vulnerability the same as weakness? “In our culture,” teaches Dr. Brené Brown, “we associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.” On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

The Power of Vulnerability is a very personal project for me,” Brené explains. “This is the first place that all of my work comes together. This audio course draws from all three of my books - it’s the culmination of everything I’ve learned over the past twelve years. I'm very excited to weave it all into a truly comprehensive form that shows what these findings and insights can mean in our lives.”

Guidance and Insights for Wholehearted Living

Over the past twelve years, Dr. Brené Brown has interviewed hundreds of people as part of an ongoing study of vulnerability. “The research shows that we try to ward disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love,” explains Dr. Brown. When we become aware of these patterns, she teaches, we begin to become conscious of how much we sacrifice in the name of self-defense -and how much richer our lives become when we open ourselves to vulnerability.

“In my research,” Dr. Brown says, “the word I use to describe people who can live from a place of vulnerability is wholehearted.” Being wholehearted is a practice—one that we can choose to cultivate through empathy, gratitude, and awareness of our vulnerability armor. Join this engaging and heartfelt teacher on The Power of Vulnerability as she offers profound insights on leaning into the full spectrum of emotions—so we can show up, let ourselves be seen, and truly be all in.

Wow!

Any additional comments?

Brené Brown is fantastic! I loved her TED talk from a while back, and heard she had published a book (Daring Greatly) and found this when I looked for the book. I opted for this over the book because Brené is SUCH an engaging story teller, and from the snippet of Daring Greatly, it sounded like Siri was doing the narrating. This did not disappoint--AT ALL. She is witty, smart and so honest (even when the honesty isn't so pretty, like the cookie story). She has a way of making all of this seem so logical, and making us feel like we are all in it together. Sure, it's a little self-helpy, but in a really intellectual way, not in a preachy hand-holding new-agey way. I have recommended this to lots of friends. If you get nothing else out of it, at least you will enjoy Brené's hilarious stories. I will likely read Daring Greatly at some point, versus going the audiobook route, since I'd like to hear her energy and enthusiasm in my head when I read it.

Vulnerable?

Some funny anecdotes, motivational speeches and interesting points, but ultimately, I don't think that it made a very strong case for vulnerability. Dr. Brown is clearly a strong, accomplished woman and the vulnerabilities that she shared struck me as only surface deep compared to what many women have to face in their personal and professional lives. I would have appreciated detailed examples of other people and their struggles with vulnerability.

Not a book but her talks

Just needs to be more factual. Personal anecdotes are nice but not enough real information here

Inticing and Captivating

What did you like best about this story?

Brene Brown speaks about vulnerability from a place of courage and authenticity. She is funny, a wonderful storyteller, and just plain real and upfront about what we hide from ourselves and others. I already feel more confident, whole and true to myself as I remember the truth about vulnerability and its gifts.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book has made me burst out laughing multiple times:)

Author's live presentation of Daring Greatly

Mostly covers the same ground as her book, Daring Greatly. Great energy, informal style, author's own voice, all help it work even better for me than the audiobook itself.

This conversation is long overdue! KUDOS!! <3 Brene!

As a whole-hearted person..... yeah right! No really. I made it through the quagmire of conditioning, indoctrination, foibles, and folly. And even so, I laughed til I cried as I listened to this book,

Our culture is so set on looking cool, that it sacrifices authenticity, truth, and courage to be so. For so many Americans, our hearts seldom get to soar, and our dreams lie dead, or are barely remembered.

In this book we find the courage to be - messy, emotionally all over the place, and in the end... real.

Hearing Brene's Texas twang fills my heart with joy, for as she describes her life and foibles, I hear my own, not shamed into smallness, but reveals as the warp and weft of a life truly worth living.

My advice - buy this. Buy several copies and give them to anyone you know - for all will find acceptance within these ideas, grace within these pages, and the love of life within Brene's words.

Brilliant. Changed my life

This is one of my favourite Audible downloads out of about 50 so far. Essential listening for every person on the planet. I can't say enough good things about Brené Brown and her work. This was my introduction to that work and I've since become totally absorbed in learning and living the messages from her work.

Give this to yourself as a gift and give it to everyone you love - and even those you don't. It will make the world a better place!

This is incredibly inspiring!

This woman and her theories/lessons on living are incredibly inspiring! I was wary to even touch it when I saw the title but I am relieved and excited that I overcame my prejudices (under pressure from the friend who recommended it!) - I believe and hope it may have changed my life. I have forwarded it to nearly everyone I know! I
