Publisher's Summary

The counterintuitive approach to achieving your true potential, heralded by the Harvard Business Review as a groundbreaking idea of the year.

The path to personal and professional fulfillment is rarely straight. Ask anyone who has achieved his or her biggest goals or whose relationships thrive, and you'll hear stories of many unexpected detours along the way. What separates those who master these challenges and those who get derailed? The answer is agility - emotional agility.

Emotional agility is a revolutionary, science-based approach that allows us to navigate life's twists and turns with self-acceptance, clear-sightedness, and an open mind. Renowned psychologist Susan David developed this concept after studying emotions, happiness, and achievement for more than 20 years. She found that no matter how intelligent or creative people are or what type of personality they have, it is how they navigate their inner world - their thoughts, feelings, and self-talk - that ultimately determines how successful they will become.

The way we respond to these internal experiences drives our actions, careers, relationships, happiness, health - everything that matters in our lives. As humans we are all prone to common hooks - things like self-doubt, shame, sadness, fear, or anger - that can too easily steer us in the wrong direction. Emotionally agile people are not immune to stresses and setbacks. The key difference is that they know how to adapt, aligning their actions with their values and making small but powerful changes that lead to a lifetime of growth. Emotional agility is not about ignoring difficult emotions and thoughts; it's about holding them loosely, facing them courageously and compassionately, and then moving past them to bring the best of yourself forward.

Drawing on her deep research, decades of international consulting, and her own experience in overcoming adversity after losing her father at a young age, David shows how anyone can thrive in an uncertain world by becoming more emotionally agile. To guide us she shares four key concepts that allow us to acknowledge uncomfortable experiences while simultaneously detaching from them, thereby allowing us to embrace our core values and adjust our actions so they can move us where we truly want to go.

Written with authority, wit, and empathy, Emotional Agility serves as a road map for real behavioral change - a new way of acting that will help you reach your full potential, whomever you are and whatever you face.

"Real and refreshing approach to self development"
Would you listen to Emotional Agility again? Why?

I would, this book is a reminder to focus on getting to know and accept myself and to honor my essence, I would like to remind myself that being true to my values is the best way to becoming the person I want to be.

What did you like best about this story?

I like how the author brought a combination of her research and a personal perspective to illustrate the concept of emotional agility

Which character – as performed by Susan David – was your favorite?

I would say Susan, her personal story was a very touching testimony of resilience and success.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me feel both and that was the beauty of it.

    Any additional comments?

While other self development books talk about will power, discipline and "passion" this book brings the most important notion without which all the other can not succeed, emotional agility. "Emotional Agility" concept and book, provides a great approach to how one can master success in life. She has found that understanding and accepting your inner world of thoughts and feelings and learning how to align your actions with you values can be the roadmap to real behavioral change and success. It is one of the best books I have read in 2016. It sparks a real understanding of what self development means and how to own the process while being authentic to oneself.

"I'm on my second read (listen)"

I'm on my second read. Why? Because the content has become life-changing. I've read many self-help books, and now I know why they didn't work. They caused me to beat myself up. Instead Dr. David shares in Emotional Agility how to find your values and create "Self-Compassion". The Audible Edition is read by Susan herself and there is an emotion and emphasis that made me feel she was having a personal conversation with me. And I love her accent. Fasten your seat-belt!

"Best book on being human in the best possible way"

I am ready to start the book over from the beginning. The author is a wonderful narrator of her own writing, which is crisp, direct, funny, poignant, compassionate, and practical. I wish I had read and understood these concepts and practices as a young adult. I might have avoided much unhappiness and many mistakes, and created better outcomes for myself and my family, friends, and coworkers. I can start putting these principles into practice right now.

"Excellent subject but listening is not everyone's cup of tea"

Subject matter is outstanding. Listeners may be discouraged by the authors accent and quirky voice modulation. I toughed it out but it took a few hours to get comfortable with presentation.

"Narrator does not fit the content"

The narration is very distracting and pretty annoying. Not because of the accent but because of the over modulation. It sounds like the narrator doesn't understand the content at all because she stops or pauses at odd places in the middle of sentences. It's very distracting and breaks the flow. I couldn't even finish the book and I had really wanted to.

    "Great material, poor story"

The base material and message is very good and really essential for all of us. The author's use of cheesy examples and child analogies detract from the message and make it tough to read sometimes. However the overall education is overdue for most of us and something we can all revisit.
