Fight, survive, adapt, and rely only on yourself. That is Derek’s creed and what's got him through the System Integration on Earth. Everything changed when the System came. Cute bunnies and beautiful butterflies became savage killing machines. Then the Invaders arrived with a single goal: to obtain ownership of this new habitable planet. War has raged ever since. None of this mattered much to Derek, aside from making living a little more perilous.

Growing up, she was the girl down the street. Even then, I knew she was different. She was tough, rough, and had the strength to stop a speeding car with her bare hands. We were as thick as thieves, sharing every adventure. Then one day she revealed a secret. She wasn't from Earth. She was from a distant place called the Arcadia Multiverse. Her people lived under the rule of a god-like entity known as the System. That System had its gaze fixed on Earth. And it was only a matter of time before it came for us.

Every year, the empire administers the rite of passage into adulthood. That rite serves to identify those blessed by Aether to become magi. The new magi are shipped to the academy to learn the arts of magic. The academy is a dangerous place; the tournaments held twice each year can cripple or kill the students, and the clans of the empire will go to great lengths to recruit the students they want. Gregory had one dream: to become a magi like the legends of old. Though he was ridiculed by the residents of the village and his unsupportive father, he never wavered from his dream.

I’ve always wanted to conquer the Big 5 dungeons ever since one of them took the life of my father nearly fifteen years ago. Nobody ever said the Path of Progression was easy, but my burning desire to dive can’t be quenched. I just never thought I’d be prohibited from getting a diving license just because I tried to help a bratty blonde girl get hers. Soon, we’re joined by a lovely brunette bookworm, and we start diving the dungeon on our own terms. As it turns out, I have a few abilities that greatly increase our chances of actually finishing the Path, leading to a life of fame and luxury.

Story
It was supposed to be a medical marvel. Instead, it triggered the apocalypse. Half of humanity mutated into mindless zombies. Half the survivors mutated into the inhumans: various new species of people with new appearances and abilities. Some grew scales, some grew fur, some could fly, some could survive only underwater. Decades passed, and from the ashes of the old world, a new patchwork civilization rose. Humans and inhumans lived in tentative peace, and the zombies turned out to be not much of a threat once a few generations of survivors had come and gone.

In the centuries since rising up against a cruel, twisted dynasty, the Seven Cities have done much to move past their horrid histories, the memories of ancient monarchs who once fed on the life and blood of their own people. Those with a talent for magic are no longer hounded and slain. The lands beyond the Cities are safe, spared the atrocities the Alescuans once wrought upon them. For 300 years, there has been peace. A game is only a game if you can quit. This is something I learned the hard way. I just wanted to let off some steam in virtual reality and ended up getting murdered and imprisoned in the body of one of the undead - slow, clumsy, and cursed to die at the hand of other players over and over again. The only way out of this awful predicament was to find the legendary Scroll of Rebirth, but the helpless plague-ridden corpse would need to be turned into a real killing machine. If only people knew what it was like to level up a dead rogue....

uncomfortable sex with a too powerful protagonist.
While the characters that aren't the main character seem pretty real (aside from the women) the main character is more or less a god which removes much drama.
Also the enemies are stupid powerful just because.
Also, also the women in this book are totally written as characters just for the protagonist to swoon and sleep with. I thought to was gross and ended up skipping several sexual scenes.
I don't love the narrator either, he makes everything seems... weird.
Story is cool though.

hard to get through. I think it was the narration. pretty mono tone and breathy with no difference between caricatures. made it very tough to fallow the story. though the story was good it did progress at its own pace. and obviously a series based book.

fun listen but...
this is a really interesting book and I'm going to get the rest of them. but damn, the sex scenes are weird. cutting off heads and killing elves then " my engorged penis exploded inside of her wet entrance. " that's not exact but pretty much. it's pretty metal but it just sounds so strange coming out of this dude's mouth.

Is he coming back?
I know he was dropped by audible. dont know what happened but I really enjoy this series have listened to it like 3 or 4 times. I didn't enjoy the tamer series too much of the same thing and sex. This has a really good story and if you like a seriously badness main character this is up your alley.

I have always been a sucker for the ancient evil type books and this was pretty good.
I didn’t like the sex scenes and how every women in the book was described in light of how sexy they were. It came off as a teenage boy having a fantasy. It’s just cheesy.

A really likeable xenocidal maniac.
Story first, a great mythic hero/villain of the distant past is awoken from his millenia and a half slumber to fight the elves. He proceeds murder the hell out of people, tries to get laid and pieces together his tragic past from slowly returning memories.
All in all a great time.
Now the big issue is the narration. He can't seem to come up with more than the one voice, at least not for long. There was one guy who had a different voice at the beginning but that dropped by the end. This kind of thing I can ignore. When you have the dude do sex scenes it's so unbelievably awkward.
4/5, Story makes everything so worth.
