Publisher's Summary

Tim Ferriss is an extraordinary young man on a mission. The 28-year-old serial vagabond and successful entrepreneur has been teaching a wildly popular course at Princeton University for the past four years: a how-to and why-to guide to throwing out the old methods for success (balancing life and work, retiring well, having a great nest egg) and replacing them with an entirely new way of living.

The 4 Hour Work Week explains what a lifestyle entrepreneur is and why you should want to become one. It teaches you how to "kill" your job and design a life, the 80/20 rule and how it increases productivity, how to replace your dreams with goals, and more. Listeners can lead a rich life by working only four hours a week, freeing up the rest of their time to spend it living the lives they want.

What the Critics Say

"It's about time this book was written. It is a long-overdue manifesto for the mobile lifestyle, and Tim Ferriss is the ideal ambassador." (Jack Canfield)
"Thanks to Tim Ferriss, I have more time in my life to travel, spend time with family, and write book blurbs. This is a dazzling and highly useful work." (A.J. Jacobs, Editor-at-Large, Esquire)

    "Great but narrow information"

The principles in this book are spot on and well worth taking in and acting on. Content is narrowed by the author's flavor for freedom.

    "Good book with one caveat"

This is a good book and it has a lot of GREAT information. It will certainly get you thinking, however, its old and a lot of the information has changed... obviously. If your the type of person that can do this though it shouldn't stop you. There are bigger obstacles in life.

"Not very effective at outsourcing the reading"
What would have made The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich better?

Put all the links that were read into a PDF and just saw see attached

What was most disappointing about Timothy Ferriss’s story?

They'd read the URL and say "H T T P colon back slash, back slash..." That is definitely the 80% that is wasting my time

Would you be willing to try another one of Ray Porter’s performances?

    No

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The first couple of chapters were good. After that I put it on 2x speed to get through it, even though it said to stop reading a book if it was bad.

    "Gives me hope."

At first I did not enjoy the somewhat "hyped" style. But then he gives you so many timesaving methods and a lot of sources that, ok I'll bite... what have I got to lose but too much weekly grind?

    "An introduction to lifestyle design"
Would you listen to The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich again? Why?

    Any additional comments?

Writing this review is a somewhat significant moment for me as when I first read this book ( many years ago), my family and I were yearning to have more time and to work from home. From literally years of stumbling and failing and attempting to find the right business model and way to market our services, we achieved our dreams. And while we in no way work four hours a week nor have a drop shipping type of business, this book was the start of it all.

Let me explain. In 2008 or so, my husband and I decided we wanted a new life experience and to raise our daughter in Asia, so we packed up our bags and moved to South Korea. This may sound random, but we had been tutoring and hosting exchange students for years, so my husband decided to give teaching in a classroom setting a go.

We loved living in Korea, but the long work hours were practically killing my husband and putting a strain on our marriage. On top of that, I was at home in our apartment with a toddler, and things were just as stressful ( and tiring) as when we were back in Los Angeles. After he finished teaching, we decided to move to Italy, closer to where I grew up.

It was there that I first read 4 Hour Work Week.

I had very little experience in business, but I believed in the concepts Tim discusses in the book, and lifestyle design was EXACTLY what my husband and I wanted; we aren't driven by money, we just want to spend time together as a family and do what we love.

I'd like to tell you that we easily were able to grasp the concepts in 4HWW but sadly it took years of trial and error to find out a biz model that worked for us, and to build our brands and find our Ideal Clients. We only lived in Italy for six months ( so we basically were living the digital nomad life) and moved to Thailand, where we had vacationed on our honeymoon. My husband started teaching again, and I devoted as much time as possible to learning marketing and how to market myself as a freelance writer.

My husband and I have been working from home for about 4 years now and are literally living our dreams. We may not make a ton of money, but again, our goal was and always will be to prioritize spending time together. I've also achieved a huge, huge dream of mine and am now writing for one of the leading travel publications in the world.

What's my point in sharing this?

I was not able to achieve the complete 4HWW and most people aren't, but I was able to use the concepts in the book to succeed. We 'worldschool' our daughter and we follow a lifestyle design and digital nomad style life, in a way ( we travel often in SE Asia). We also took Tim's advice to heart with regards to focusing on goals or experiences other than a set amount of money, ie if you want to fly to Bali and go on a two week vacation, tally up how much that costs and come up with a plan to earn that amount.

Another great book to help you figure out how you can be self-employed or a freelancer is 100 Dollar Start Up. That book is very in depth and features great stories from brick and mortar businesses and a few solopreneurs.

If you value lifestyle design and want to prioritize time spent with loved ones, I also recommend Essentialism.

All of these books and 4HWW won't help you if you don't devote yourself to finding out who you can serve and how, aka finding out the right biz model and ideal client. You will have to do a lot of hard work, but it's so worth it!

"Great information, even beyond advice for making more while doing less."

To be honest, I have not tried any of the techniques recommended to make more money in less time and work--though I intend to over the next few weeks. Monetary tips withstanding, I still enjoyed this book. Tim Ferriss's stories and metaphysical experiences provide a simple guideline on finding meaning to YOUR life. Full of wonderful quotes and anecdotes, I recommend this to anyone who is looking for help getting out of the ruts that life has thrown their way.
