Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money - the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Finite games, like football or chess, have known players, fixed rules, and a clear endpoint. The winners and losers are easily identified. Infinite games, games with no finish line, like business or politics, or life itself, have players who come and go. The rules of an infinite game are changeable, while infinite games have no defined endpoint. There are no winners or losers - only ahead and behind. The question is, how do we play to succeed in the game we’re in? In this revelatory new audiobook, Simon Sinek offers a framework for leading with an infinite mindset.

Developing and implementing a strategy is the central task of a leader. A good strategy is a specific and coherent response to - and approach for - overcoming the obstacles to progress. A good strategy works by harnessing and applying power where it will have the greatest effect. Yet, Rumelt shows that there has been a growing and unfortunate tendency to equate Mom-and-apple-pie values, fluffy packages of buzzwords, motivational slogans, and financial goals with “strategy”.

Great book, the narration not so much
I really liked the book and was impressed with this new way of looking at strengths and weaknesses. However, the narration almost kept me from listening to it and at times I found I had wondered off in my thinking.

Low quality audio book
I was excited to explore the idea of our strengths and weaknesses living on opposite sides of the same spectrum, but I was incredibly disappointed.
I struggled to listen to this book because of its low quality production. The author should have had someone else read. His sense of timing and pacing makes for a boring listen.
I was also not impressed with the writing, as his “research” was cited from sources such as Men’s Health.
