Eileen Sharp and Vic Hightower were frustrated. After years of profitable, predictable growth, Swan Services was in a rut. Meetings were called and discussions held, but few decisions were made and even less got done. People were pointing fingers and assigning blame, but nothing happened to solve Swan’s mounting problems. It felt as though they were working harder than ever but with less impact. The company Eileen and Vic had founded and built for 10 years was a different place. It just wasn’t fun anymore.

Story
You cannot bounce back from hardship. You can only move through it. There is a path through pain to wisdom, through suffering to strength, and through fear to courage if we have the virtue of resilience. In 2012, Eric Greitens unexpectedly heard from a former SEAL comrade, a brother-in-arms he hadn’t seen in a decade. Zach Walker had been one of the toughest of the tough. But ever since he returned home from war to his young family in a small logging town, he’d been struggling. Without a sense of purpose, plagued by PTSD, and masking his pain with heavy drinking, he needed help. Zach and Eric started writing and talking nearly every day, as Eric set down his thoughts on what it takes to build resilience in our lives.

It's comforting to imagine that superstars in their fields were just born better equipped than the rest of us. When a co-worker loses 20 pounds, or a friend runs a marathon while completing a huge project at work, we assume they have more grit, more willpower, more innate talent, and above all, more motivation to see their goals through. But that's not at actually true, as popular Inc.com columnist Jeff Haden proves. "Motivation" as we know it is a myth. Motivation isn't the special sauce that we require at the beginning of any major change.

Sales is a skill anyone can learn and master - and introverts are especially good at it once they learn how to leverage their natural strengths. Introverts aren't comfortable with traditional tactics like aggressively pushing a product or talking over a customer's objections. That's the beauty of The Introvert's Edge: it doesn't focus on the sale itself but on a sales system that helps introverts feel sincere instead of sales-y.

Not innovative, but a specific process.
There's not really much here that you haven't heard many times before in other business books. The anecdotes and jokes in particular tend to be very tired, and often references other books that the concepts came from. But there is one key way in which it stands out: it presents a list of steps to follow. You certainly could take the book and work through the processes one at a time in your business. (I feel this book is geared to small businesses with 5-200 employees.) That makes it much more practical than many other books. So hey, worth a shot, right?

Great business advice
What made the experience of listening to Traction the most enjoyable?
I listened to this while the startup I was working for was going through some hard times. The more I listened to it, the more I realized we were on the wrong path. When attorneys spoke to employees about their ideas on how to fix the company, I felt like I was prepared to make a good case for some change.
What did you like best about this story?
I got what I wanted out of this book and don't feel a need to read more - however if I find myself working for another startup company, it might be time to read it again.
Which character – as performed by Kevin Pierce – was your favorite?
Lots of examples and anecdotes. Without it, this would have been a very boring book, but the plentiful real-life examples made it easy to listen to.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Nothing
Any additional comments?
It makes a good point that company mantras might feel cheesy, but they are needed. If you're going through a list of ideals you want your employees to follow, you will soon realize what you want in a person that you hire - and you will realize the employees you have that don't follow your standards.

A few Good points, stretched over six hours
In my case, this book was not at all life-changing. All the points in there are valid, the main idea is that in order to have a successful organization, there needs to be systems in place, people to follow them, and have the right people in the right mindset. This is all very obvious.

Actionable insights based on real life experience.
I'd recommend this book if you want to transform your company or are starting a new company. It offers a total solution for operational excellence that impacts every aspect of running a business. Some of the content may seem familiar if you tend to read a lot of business books. (In fact many of the main points are quoting other authors.) But there are several great insights in this book that are not available elsewhere, and they are quite helpful for any business owner or executive leader. This book does a good job of taking the key principles of business success and making them actionable. For example, before reading this book I would think, feel, and say that "I hated meetings". This book changed the way I look at meetings, but it didn't stop there. It then gave me a system on exactly how to conduct great meetings. Now, I can say that "I used to hate poorly planned meetings", but now I cannot emphasize strongly enough the importance of regular meetings, because they are efficient and effective, and necessary for team communication.
After you read this book you WILL have a SYSTEM that you can use to run your business. As it turns out, SYSTEMS are what business is all about.
I gave it 4/5 stars for "performance" because of a few minor enunciation errors made by the narrator which were quite distracting. Articulation matters! Overall - excellent book and definitely worth a listen!

Magic. Read it twice and implementation now.
It can be alot at first depending where you at I am sure. 1 year later with some more management team member and clear vision in place now this is gold to me.

Great content, but unsurprisingly boring
You can't really make this stuff too entertaining, so I agree with some other reviews that say the book could've been a pamphlet. HOWEVER I've started doing a few of the things they suggest, and I don't think I would've started them if they hadn't been repeated to me over and over again over the space of a week.
Oh wow wait a sec..... I bet if I go back and count, they repeat all the important bits at least seven times 🤔
Anyways the system sounds awesome for me, I love organised systems and every chapter just sounded exactly how I WANT to run my business but I just haven't gotten around to it. The system has given me a check list of sorts to tidy up my system and I love it. I think I'm all in, we'll see how the first few things work out...
