Publisher's summary

It's starting to happen everywhere: in business, social, and spiritual circles. People are discussing whether they are dealing with a problem at a "green" level or how they can try to see things from a "yellow" perspective. What do these colors mean? They're all a part of Spiral Dynamics, a sweeping view of human consciousness, taught by Dr. Don Beck, that has received Ken Wilber's "highest recommendation".

On Spiral Dynamics Integral, listeners will learn to master this vital method for unraveling the "complexity codes" of human psychology and transforming conflict into productive action.

an excellent introduction

I have been exposed to bits and pieces of Spiral Dynamics and even at one point tried to read the book co-authored by Don Beck, (but found it too heavy going). I have found this audio really excellent. It already has me thinking differently about all sorts of things, reacting differently to people and looking seriously at the way I work.

It has also left me feeling quite optimistic. Here at last is a way of looking at the enormous difficulties that face human kind all over the planet that can offer practically useful ways to get ourselves out of the mess we are.

It does however, require an openness of mind obviously not available to all its reviewers! Not everyone will be able to "get it" (as the theory itself suggests), but for those ready for it, this could be the first step in a profound change in thinking that will allow us to become part of the solution instead of remaining part of the problem.

Spiral Procrustean Bed

Have you ever encountered someone who has picked up some theory such as the MBTI or Enneagram, becomes obsessed with it and used it to explain everything?

Have you ever encountered an enthusiastic devotee of some unfalsifiable theory that strings together a few fairly obvious things all the while making the theory sound fabulous in its ability to explain almost everything, all the while ignoring the fact the things it explains are better explained by other theories?

Have you ever been subjected to a sales pitch by a salesman who is endlessly self-referential, gives circular answers, and who is pitching something that, by implication, if you buy it you are one of the moral and intellectual elite?

If you've not experienced these things, you will have by the time you have finished this book.

Excellent complementary material

If you are already familiar with the details of SDi this material can be an excellent complement. Conversely, if you are new to this subject it may appear boring and technical and you should start with the book or something else.

Don Beck is not the best narrator but provides very good examples and insights about Spiral Dynamics.

Highly Recommend

If you are curious about why we do what we do, this is a great resource. The lecture style and Clare Graves audio make this a wonderful audio book experience.

The triunph of the trivial

This is really one of the worst audios to which I ever listened. It is empty, sanctimonious and boring. Based on very superficial analysis and historical generalizations.

beyond being green

This book is truly remarkable. It looks at different ways of thinking about the world, from a self centered perspective to a global perspective, and clearly demonstrates how things evolve.

Just as we grow, adults aren't better adolescents who are not better than babies, the book uses the same approach to talk about society and consciousness. It talks about what comes after the Green Movement. Fascinating!

Mind Blowing insights into humanity

This book is critical for anyone who is curious about society and how it works. Spiral Dynamics not only explains why the world has the conflicts it does but also the hope looming on the horizon of how to make the world better. I am asking all my friends to read this book so we can have the terminology to find solutions today.

Amazing insights. Maybe a bit too complex

I liked a lot. Something completely different and new never heard about. It is hard to figure out how to apply the learnings in daily situations.

Like an old man getting up to reach for the paper

What disappointed you about Spiral Dynamics Integral?

The slow pace of it is painful. Like an old man telling you a story that drags on and you hope for a point, but you've tuned out already.

What was most disappointing about Don Beck’s story?

All the back story to start off with and not enough hook to keep your attention or want to care about the author.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He narrates like the story is written, dull and boring.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Sleepiness. My body started to fail me as my arms felt 12 feet long and back muscles grew too tired to support my upper body.

Any additional comments?

This book was recommended, but oh my was it painful to try an continue reading.
