Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author of The Good Girl Mary Kubica returns with an electrifying and addictive tale of deceit and obsession.

In downtown Chicago, a young woman named Esther Vaughan disappears from her apartment without a trace. A haunting letter addressed to "My Dearest" is found among her possessions, leaving her friend and roommate, Quinn Collins, to wonder where Esther is and whether or not she's the person Quinn thought she knew....

Meanwhile, in a small Michigan harbor town an hour outside Chicago, a mysterious woman appears in the quiet coffee shop where 18-year-old Alex Gallo works as a dishwasher. He is immediately drawn to her charm and beauty, but what starts as an innocent crush quickly spirals into something far more dark and sinister than he ever expected.

As Quinn searches for answers about Esther and Alex is drawn further under the stranger's spell, master of suspense Mary Kubica takes listeners on a taut and twisted thrill ride that builds to a stunning conclusion and shows that no matter how fast and far we run, the past always catches up with us in the end.

    "Great book, Bad performers!"

I really enjoyed this storyline. It was very interesting, although the it takes a few chapters to get fully invested in the characters. A disappearing friend, a new girl to town, it is very intriguing. I really liked all the back stories that came to light throughout. It really kept things going. There were a lot of twists and turns that were very unexpected, but some scenes were dragged out with too many details.

Also, the performers just didn't capture the characters the way I would have if I read the book instead. They didn't have enough emotion. They probably are the reason I only gave the book 4 stars.

"Interesting, original, and kept me guessing"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was such a good mystery and I couldn't figure out what was going on. The characters were really interesting. I'm surprised by some of the reviews that are negative. I have written plenty of negative reviews of best sellers, but I was delighted to discover this book. I bought it because I really liked The Good Girl and I thought this was even better. The narrators were excellent and well matched to the characters. A real treat.

    "Annoying male narrator"

Loved the female narrator and the story was very good. The male narrator sounded like a high school thespian wanna-be, emphasizing every main word with a theatrical flourish that didn't fit his voice or the story. It was distracting and completely irritating.

    "Kubica Does Not Disappoint"

Wow! Great, suspenseful story told in two voices. This book is made for audio. The narrators are perfect. You won't be able to stop. Now I just want to sit and ponder it.

"Like nails on a chalk board"

The narrator is SO ANNOYING. Her voice is terrible, she forgets when she is speaking as herself and uses a male impersonation, and the way she over-enunciates is maddening.

Also, the love story seems to be tacked on as an afterthought, and with the author's obsession with how "rare" it is to have ombré hair, it seems a bit dated.

    "Just okay"

Fans of this author's previous books need to know that this book is definitely not in that league. It's okay...mediocre at best, but it just never got me the way her other books did. If you know this author's style, you know that there is a slow reveal of information which could potentially lead you in a hundred different directions and the reader spends a good bit of time speculating about all the possibilities, or at least I do. There is some of that in this book, however, I felt quite let down by the resolution of the story.
I thought the development of the character of Alex was well done and I thought it was the most noteworthy aspect of the book. Unfortunately, the narrator of the character was, to put it gently, not good. The female narrator was average.
I found the book entertaining, just not something I would necessarily recommend.

    "Agonizingly Slow"

This story was just too slow for me. Ugh. Agonizing.

The Alex storyline was extremely boring; I was not interested in it at all.

Quinn’s storyline was better, but not by much!

I had lots of theories about what happened to Esther – and at one point I began to wondered if perhaps the two storylines were not taking place in the same time, like they were separated by 10 years or something - I was WAY off base! When the “Big Reveal” finally happened, I was underwhelmed. Had I enjoyed the story more, then perhaps the climax would have been better, but as it was I was just glad it was almost over.

The final end to Quinn’s story (is that called a button?) just made me roll my eyes – it was beyond dumb.

    "Boring"

I kept going back to the book to try to listen again. It was so slow I couldn't get past the third of the book.

    "Soooo boring!!!"

Story is so slow... And not interesting enough to keep you wanting to, at minimum, know how it ends. Save your money.

    "A Long Awaited Cry "

The novel takes entirely too long to get going.
Once you are around the 15 chapter it starts getting interesting....Kubica took too long to rock the cradle and ending was disappointing for Alex, I liked him. Single White Female comparison is a far stretch for this audiobook.
Good Luck on this cradle ride?
