Publisher's Summary

A woman is forced to question her own identity in this riveting and emotionally charged thriller by the blockbuster best-selling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica.

Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she’s ever known.

Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie’s mind. Her judgment is blurred; her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what she’s only imagined.

Meanwhile, 20 years earlier and 250 miles away, another woman’s split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie’s secret past. Has Jessie’s whole life been a lie, or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

Great performance... but the story...?

Both narrators did a great job. I felt like I could really "hear" both characters through them. But the big twist at the end of the story? I don't know, I'm still processing, but I'm not crazy about it. I'm especially not crazy about what Eden does last (well, we find out last. She does it much, much earlier, thanks to the back and forth storyline) I was kind of, almost liking her again at that point, too...

A frustrating read. I didn't hate it, but I definitely didn't love it either. My first book from this author... the jury's still out on whether it will be my last or not.

Heed the description

The book description tells you what you probably would have preferred knowing before listening to the whole book.

The writing is great save for the “twist” or “rabbit hole” as described.

Narrators are lovely as always. Overall it’s a good read, and could have been great if it hadn’t cheated. Which is what it feels like.

Great story....terrible ending

I was drawn in and interested the whole way then the story just dropped off at the end. Love her books but this ending was disappointing to me!

Disappointing

I preordered the audio, having read and enjoyed Kubica's previous books. What everyone refers to as a "twist" in the reviews isn't a twist at all. It's a cheat. It seems like an amateur move on the writer's part. Too bad. I'll try her again, but I won't be preordering.

Awful ending

The story is so intriguing but then the end is such a disappointment. Don’t buy this book if you enjoy in depth closure.

Ending...

Towards the end of the book it ran really really really really long. It was good to get closure at the end, though I think that there was probably an hour of content
that could have been chopped. I do love her style of writing, so I continued to power through it. Performance was great.

Terribly disappointing snooze fest

I tried, I kept pushing through half the book hoping eventually I’d become interested, but with each chapter the story only become worse with endless monotonous, boring ramblings.

This is Not a Thriller

Marketed as a thriller, as a suspenseful page turner is a lie. It is nothing more than a woman's growing obsession to get pregnant or have a baby. waste of time

Could it move any slower?

I don't usually write reviews but I found this book so confusing, slow and too filled with minutiae to NOT write a review.
The ending was swift and unsatisfactory after dragging the story out forever. I found myself wanting to slap both of the main characters so many times. Would not recommend it.
