Publisher's Summary

A woman is forced to question her own identity in this riveting and emotionally charged thriller by the blockbuster best-selling author of The Good Girl, Mary Kubica.

Jessie Sloane is on the path to rebuilding her life after years of caring for her ailing mother. She rents a new apartment and applies for college. But when the college informs her that her social security number has raised a red flag, Jessie discovers a shocking detail that causes her to doubt everything she’s ever known.

Finding herself suddenly at the center of a bizarre mystery, Jessie tumbles down a rabbit hole, which is only exacerbated by grief and a relentless lack of sleep. As days pass and the insomnia worsens, it plays with Jessie’s mind. Her judgment is blurred; her thoughts are hampered by fatigue. Jessie begins to see things until she can no longer tell the difference between what’s real and what she’s only imagined.

Meanwhile, 20 years earlier and 250 miles away, another woman’s split-second decision may hold the key to Jessie’s secret past. Has Jessie’s whole life been a lie, or have her delusions gotten the best of her?

You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!????

This book made me mad! Never have a read a book that made me feel so duped. I wasted hours of my life on this book. I definitely did not expect this from Mary Kubica because I normally like her novels. But I doubt I will ever read another of her novels again. I feel like she is just laughing at her readers with this ridiculous ending!! This was just a pointless, pointless book. Absolutely ridiculous! Don’t continue to read this review it you still plan to read this idiotic book. Spoiler alert ahead, but I have to warn those who make the right choice to bypass this stupid book. Guess what?! It was all a dream! Yeah she pulled a freaking soap opera ending on us. I am going to try and send this book back because I am furious that I wasted my time. Don’t make the mistake of wasting yours!

Disappointing

I preordered the audio, having read and enjoyed Kubica's previous books. What everyone refers to as a "twist" in the reviews isn't a twist at all. It's a cheat. It seems like an amateur move on the writer's part. Too bad. I'll try her again, but I won't be preordering.

Great story....terrible ending

I was drawn in and interested the whole way then the story just dropped off at the end. Love her books but this ending was disappointing to me!

Great performance... but the story...?

Both narrators did a great job. I felt like I could really "hear" both characters through them. But the big twist at the end of the story? I don't know, I'm still processing, but I'm not crazy about it. I'm especially not crazy about what Eden does last (well, we find out last. She does it much, much earlier, thanks to the back and forth storyline) I was kind of, almost liking her again at that point, too... A frustrating read. I didn't hate it, but I definitely didn't love it either. My first book from this author... the jury's still out on whether it will be my last or not.

Heed the description

The book description tells you what you probably would have preferred knowing before listening to the whole book. The writing is great save for the “twist” or “rabbit hole” as described. Narrators are lovely as always. Overall it’s a good read, and could have been great if it hadn’t cheated. Which is what it feels like.

Awful ending

The story is so intriguing but then the end is such a disappointment. Don’t buy this book if you enjoy in depth closure.

Couldn't wait for it to be over

This was absolutely the most boring book I've ever listened to. I kept waiting for it to get better...……….never happened

Despise ending

The back and forth between narration slowed down the story painfully and the ending was infuriating. I can't explain more without spoilers. Read at your own risk of feeling like you have thrown away precious hours for absolutely no return.

Meandering drivel.

Normally I am a fan of Mary Kubica's work but this was really painful. Told from two different perspectives, the story takes a really long time to gain any momentum at all and when it does, it is quickly lost again. Much of one of the perspectives is like a never-ending description of a bad drug trip which is not only monotonous but leaves the listener with such a diminishing care factor that you would give almost anything for it to be over. The more it goes on, the more you realise just how little you care what happens to the character. Julia Whelan does a good job (as usual) of narration, as does Jayme Mattler, but this is ultimately just directionless piffle. I only made it to the end because I was on a long drive and had little else to occupy me. Now it's finally over, I feel drained and gun shy of more books by this author. If you need a cure for insomnia, look no further.
