Nursing the faded scars of a long-held trauma, Emily Page and her husband, awaiting the arrival of their first child, move from New York City to the uber-wealthy Clairmont, Texas. There, Emily is swept into a world of opulent privilege and shifting loyalties. I have read most of the rest of Julia Heaberlin's books and greatly enjoyed them all (Paper Ghosts and We Are All the Same in the Dark are particular favorites). I realize this one was written earlier in her career, and she had not yet developed into the masterful suspense writer she's become. While this one was not my favorite, it's still worth reading. I just wouldn't start with it if you're not familiar with her work.

I also found the narrator's voice grating and her performance melodramatic.

Not Her Best but Worth Reading

I didn’t enjoy this book because of too many characters and redundant throughout. Exhausted repetitive listening.

This was a good novel. The narrator was solid all the way through, giving voice to several different characters in different accents. The story had several components which the author was able to connect solidly. At times, I felt that the author provided unnecessary details which were mundane. However, overall, I think it's a solid audiobook!

I’ve read all but one of Ms Heaberlin’s books this year (2023) I love all of her characters, each is fleshed out to enhance the twists and turn’s that make her books a delight to read. She has a gift and I’m here to enjoy every book she writes.

I love this author

A good story and use of visuals, likable and humorous main character, good development of additional characters, and the narrator was excellent. This book came up in “psychological thrillers” when I searched, but I’d probably call it a murder mystery, either way it was great listen.

Entertaining and engaging
