Publisher's summary
"Indistractable provides a framework that will deliver the focus you need to get results." (James Clear, author of Atomic Habits)
You sit down at your desk to work on an important project, but a notification on your phone interrupts your morning. Later, as you're about to get back to work, a colleague taps you on the shoulder to chat. At home, screens get in the way of quality time with your family. Another day goes by, and once again, your most important personal and professional goals are put on hold.
What would be possible if you followed through on your best intentions? What could you accomplish if you could stay focused and overcome distractions? What if you had the power to become "indistractable"?
International best-selling author, former Stanford lecturer, and behavioral design expert, Nir Eyal, wrote Silicon Valley's handbook for making technology habit-forming. Five years after publishing Hooked, Eyal reveals distraction's Achilles' heel in his groundbreaking new book.
In Indistractable, Eyal reveals the hidden psychology driving us to distraction. He describes why solving the problem is not as simple as swearing off our devices: Abstinence is impractical and often makes us want more.
Eyal lays bare the secret of finally doing what you say you will do with a four-step, research-backed model. Indistractable reveals the key to getting the best out of technology, without letting it get the best of us.
Inside, Eyal overturns conventional wisdom and reveals:
- Why distraction at work is a symptom of a dysfunctional company culture - and how to fix it
- What really drives human behavior and why "time management is pain management"
- Why your relationships (and your sex life) depend on you becoming indistractable
- How to raise indistractable children in an increasingly distracting world
Empowering and optimistic, Indistractable provides practical, novel techniques to control your time and attention - helping you live the life you really want.

As it turns out, we’re searching for external solutions to an internal problem. We won’t find what we’re searching for in punishing diets, productivity apps, or the latest self-improvement schemes. Yet all is not lost - we just need to learn how to take time for ourselves, without agenda or profit, and redefine what is truly worthwhile.

Change comes most readily when you understand what's standing between you and success and tailor your solution to that roadblock. If you want to work out more but find exercise difficult and boring, downloading a goal-setting app probably won't help. But what if, instead, you transformed your workouts so they became a source of pleasure instead of a chore? Turning an uphill battle into a downhill one is the key to success.

As high achievers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the path to success is paved with relentless work. That if we want to overachieve, we have to overexert, overthink, and overdo. That if we aren’t perpetually exhausted, we’re not doing enough. But lately, working hard is more exhausting than ever. And the more depleted we get, the more effort it takes to make progress. Stuck in an endless loop of “Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat”, we’re often working twice as hard to achieve half as much.

In Disconnected, renowned psychotherapist and longtime school counselor Tom Kersting explores the device-dependent world our children live in and how it is impacting their mental and emotional well-being.

Story
Most people don't need to be experts in their field. Yes, the successful know more than the average person about a particular topic, and they often possess a better-than-average ability with a particular skill set; but not everyone who is successful is an expert, he makes clear. And yet we continue to deeply value the expertise ideal. In Master of None, Hudson turns expertise on its head and shows that by embracing variety and becoming more versatile, anyone can succeed and become more open to different opportunities in life.

Most of us know that sugar can wreak havoc on adult bodies, but few realize how uniquely harmful it is to the growing livers, hearts, and brains of children. And the damage can begin early in life. In his research on the effects of sugar on kids' present and future health, USC Professor of Pediatrics and Program Director for Diabetes and Obesity at Children's Hospital Los Angeles Michael Goran has found that too much sugar doesn't just cause childhood obesity, it can cause health issues in kids who are not overweight, too.

Incredibly helpful!
I listened to this book twice in a row and each time I found separate little gems I missed. I immediately started timeboxing my schedule and 2 weeks in I've already been more productive. I also loved the chapters on raising indistractable children. Although I'm a big fan of personal development it never occurred to me how many practices I could teach my son that would not only help out now but also make his habits better for everything he dreams to accomplish in the future. Great listen, Definitely highly recommended.

Great For Those Distracted by Devices
Good book, but didn't really help me with my issue. This is almost solely focused on stopping devices and technology from distracting us. I was looking for more info about self motivation to get things done. Only recommended if your specific issue is dependence on devices.

Common sense framework to be more productive
I always enjoy books that teach focus and discipline. This book falls in line with most. Common sense approaches and hard work are generally the key to becoming more productive. Most salient to me were the sections on time boxing and social pacts. I would have liked to hear more tactics and examples of optimizing time.
I am not fond of life hacks of which there is a section dedicated. I find life hacks to be somewhat kitschy and usually mostly irrelevant to the real practices of being productive. I believe those small things will naturally disappear as one gains control of their lives. Of course, I’m not an expert on such things. :)
All-in-all I enjoyed this book and recommend it for anyone looking to build more productive habits, especially time management and accountability. Thanks Nir!
