Publisher's summary

You don't have to live overwhelmed by stuff - you can get rid of clutter for good! Decluttering expert Dana White identifies the emotional challenges that make it difficult to declutter and provides workable solutions to break through and make progress.

While the world seems to be in love with the idea of tiny houses and minimalism, many of us simply can't purge it all and start from nothing. Yet a home with too much stuff is difficult to maintain, so where do we begin? Add in paralyzing emotional attachments and constant life challenges, and it can feel almost impossible to make real decluttering progress.

In Decluttering at the Speed of Life, decluttering expert and author Dana White identifies the mindsets and emotional challenges that make it difficult to declutter. In her signature humorous approach, she provides workable solutions to break through these struggles and get clutter out - for good!

Not only does Dana provide strategies, but she dives deep into how to implement them, no matter the listener's clutter level or emotional resistance to decluttering. She helps identify procrasticlutter - the stuff that will get done eventually so it doesn't seem urgent - as well as how to make progress when there's no time to declutter.

In Decluttering at the Speed of Life, Dana’s chapters cover:

  • Why you need this book (You know why)
  • Your unique home
  • Decluttering in the midst of real life
  • Change your mind, change your home
  • Breaking through your decluttering delusions
  • Working it out room by room
  • Helping others declutter

As long as we're living and breathing, new clutter will appear. The good news is that by following Dana’s advice, decluttering will get easier, become more natural, and require significantly fewer hours, less emotional bandwidth, and little to no sweat to keep going.

I guess I have to declutter now

I'm a dad of 3 and was feeling overwhelmed with the amount of crap filling up in my family's home. I think this book will actually help. Multiple times I found myself thinking - "thank God! This lady is just as crazy as I am - tortured to throw away perfectly good stuff that could be used for a project one day! If she can do it, maybe I can too. gosh darnit"

Easy to follow--I liked it!

What did you love best about Decluttering at the Speed of Life?

Dana's narration was great--for a book like this it was fun to have the author reading the helpful tips and self deprecating humor was spot on. I have listened to another book about tidying up and I have to tell you the idea of pulling out all of a certain object or article of clothing into one room makes me want to go lie down. This book was short, funny and gave helpful tips on how to declutter your home in a way that is not too overwhelming. Real life advice for those of us who are just your typical, busy moms who have been overwhelmed by stuff.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Decluttering at the Speed of Life?

Duh clutter, procrasti-clutter.....her descriptions of different types of clutter as well as something she calls "clutter threshold" were easy for me to relate to.

Have you listened to any of Dana K. White’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no but I would like to listen to her first book about organizing based on this title.

I needed this

I'm decluttering. I'm sick of chaos and stuff stressing me out. this book supported my hard work without making me feel bad about how crazy the stuff got. I love it and highly recommend it, even if your house is tidy. Everyone has a Monica closet to work on.

Best Decluttering Book I've Read

I think this is the book that will finally help me succeed at decluttering. I love the five steps. They make so much sense. And I really enjoyed the author's reading of the book. She did a great job all around. I was using her steps before I finished the book.

Commonsense solutions

I'm a big fan of Dana K. White. She is down-to-earth, and speaks from her own personal experience. I love that she narrates the book herself. It's almost like listening to a friend talk about overcoming her own struggles. Her strategy for decluttering is simple and makes sense, and I've seen improvement in my own home by following her plan. The only reaso I didn't give this book a 5-star rating is because it tends to be repetitive. The same process applies regardless of the room or items to be decluttered. Still, listening to this book while decluttering motivated me to continue the process.
Be advised that this is NOT a book about organising your space. You'll have to look elsewhere for that.

Dana changed my life

Dana’s first book (How to Manage your Home without Losing your Mind) changed my life last year. This year, her new book Decluttering at the Speed of Life has changed me even more- and all for the better. I’ve been married 7 years and have two preschool-aged kids at home with me. I often find my inner-self accusing, “You should know how to do this by now” about basic life skills like keeping a home tidy and clean. But that’s not a helpful mindset! It is such a freedom to name something as challenge for you (even if it’s not for other people) and accept help! I’ve been so blessed by the advice in these two books. God has really used them to help me get a better handle on running my home and to make more time for more important things like enjoying my family! One thing that really struck me was that my desires changed: I no longer want to hold on to (as many) things for “maybe” or “someday” or other reasons, because I truly do value having a more functional, lovely, and peaceful home for myself and my husband, and especially for my kids to grow up in! Thanks, Dana! And everyone else- get this book! ;)

PS. Her narration of the book is clear and pleasant. I love her podcast and recommend that as well!

Great Tips Quick Read

I really enjoyed her style of writing. This book was informative, and entertaining. The tips are great, if you are looking to simplify and downsize your stuff. More than just organizing, but really evaluating what you need and really want in your life. Definitely helped me.

Best book on this subject I've found! I have listened to this book many times and it is a real help! Love it!

I wish I had found this book first, before buying lots of other books on decluttering, downsizing, etc. This book was easy to understand, suggestions were wonderful, and the author/narrator was very pleasant and non-judgemental. I just finished this book and am now listening to it again. Highly recommend!

Just de-clutter.

Those words made the difference in being overwhelmed by stuff and gaining control of my house. This book is the answer I've been looking for and have quickly and easily gotten my house and life in order. It's such a relief to find a method that works for me! As I listened to, (and then read the Kindle version), it was as if something magical happened in my brain. I finally "got it!" Thank you, Dana, for your recipe for success!
