Publisher's summary

Finally, a housekeeping and organizational system developed for those of us who'd describe our current living situation as a "f--king mess" that we "really need to get around to fixing one day". Unf--k Your Habitat is for anyone who has been left behind by traditional aspirational systems - the ones that ignore single people with full-time jobs, people without kids but living with roommates, and people with mental illnesses or physical limitations. Most organizational books are aimed at stay-at-home moms and people who seem to have unimaginable amounts of free time. They assume we all iron our sheets, have linen napkins to match our table runners, and can keep plants alive for longer than a week. Basically, they ignore most of us living here in the real world.

Interspersed with lists and challenges, this practical, no-nonsense guide helps you develop lifelong habits. It motivates you to embrace a new lifestyle in manageable sections so you can start applying the tactics as you progress. This philosophy is more realistic than aspirational, but the goal is the same: not everyone will have a showcase of a home, but whatever your habitat, you deserve for it to bring you happiness, not stress.

It Works

I saw a few bad reviews of this audio book, so I almost didn't pick it up, but I do love the ufyh blog, so I thought I'd give it a shot. THEN I saw it was narrated by Emily Woo Zeller, who also narrated another self-help-for-messy-people book in my library, and I was sold. Zeller has an engaging voice, and I really enjoy her readings.
But the ultimate test of a self-help book is whether or not it initiated any change in attitude or behavior. And this one did.
I actually cleaned stuff! I cleaned lots of stuff. I did like five loads of laundry, folded it, and the put it away! (I know you don't know me, but if you did, you would be flabbergasted)
Are you going to learn a magical secret that will make cleaning happen like magic? No. But when have you ever heard anything in a self-help book that you didn't already know?
What you will get is a friendly slap on the back of the head that WILL help you start dealing with your clutter and mess in a positive, healthy way, and if you're looking for a book on how to clean your house, that's what you really need, isn't it?
I highly recommend listening to this audio book while you clean. It kept me engaged and giggling through what would have otherwise been a horrible process.

Better than most decluttering books.

Have depression? How about anxiety? Got a situation that most decluttering books don't address? This book is written for those of us who live in the real world. If you aren't sensitive to the occasional f-bomb, then this is the book for you.

Nothing new

This book has a catchy title, honestly, and I was drawn to it because of it. But in listening to it, if you know anything about the pomodoro method, save your time and money. Set a timer for 20 minutes and give yourself a 10 minute break. Repeat. There, that’s the book summary

Good advice, lost in the clutter

This book is 80% "don't be so hard on yourself, life is SO HAAAARD" and 20% good advice. Honestly, I wish I'd only listened to the summary chapter at the end.

Why did they pick this horrible narrator

I would re-buy this book if they picked a more natural narrator. She sounds like amazon Alexa. It is awful. Distracts from the whole purpose of the book. I downloaded this book on Audible because I loved the website and the app, and I wanted to listen to it while I cleaned. I got so angry with the crappy tone of the narrator that I stopped to write this review early. Whoever was in charge of picking the narrator should have it re-done by someone who can actually swear and sound natural doing it. I am dreading listening to the rest of this book and I was REALLY looking forward to hearing it. My advice is to buy the paper copy or kindle version.

stuck on gender

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Honestly after 45min I had to stop listening because she never moved forward into anything other than that a man is capable of doing house work believe it or not.... As a man who does house work after a day of work work I do not need to be convinced. Maybe ill try to finish the book at some point, but for now I would spend your money on the many other good books out there first.

Pretty good

I liked where the author was coming from and the speaker was good. Sometimes. But after 15 minutes I felt like I was listening to the worlds longest infomercial. It was really hard to get through. Until I accidentally sped it up from 1.0 to 1.25 and the inflections and tone sounded much more normal and no longer annoying. After I sped it up I would give the voice performance a 4. But without speeding it up definitely a 2. I just felt like at a normal speed the tone and inflections didn’t really match the books content. But overall I was finally able to enjoy my listening and content. and think I’ll start over again in case I missed anything from the beginning.

meh

I had high hopes for this book as she shortly went through all the different reasons why someone doesn't want to or can't clean. Even agreed when she said there is still an existing stigma that it's woman's work, but it didn't need an entire chapter on systematic oppression! I skipped through after it had gone on way longer than most and tried to keep enjoying while I cleaned. But I can sum up the ENTIRE book in 1 sentence. Do bursts of work, break for half the amount, adjust length to personal needs. That is the only advice she ever gives. Everything else is standard "You can do it!" with the word fuck thrown in to sound edgy and ride the coattails of Mark Manson.

inclusive!

I love how she specifically addressed illness and disability, as well as gender disparities in housework. This is a delightful realistic book.
