Publisher's summary
What's the quickest way to ruin a friendship? Do great friendships have anything in common? Are close friendships in the workplace such a bad thing? These are just a few of the questions that best-selling author Tom Rath asked when he embarked on a massive study about the impact of friendships. His team's findings - including the landmark discovery that people who have a "best friend at work" are seven times as likely to be engaged in their job - are sure to challenge long-held assumptions people have about their friendships.
Vital Friends will help you better understand the eight vital friendship roles your friends play in your life and at work, and will help you develop these relationships into vital friendships that measurably improve your life. Each copy also provides access to the Vital Friends Assessment and web site - a personalized, groundbreaking test that will help you see your coworkers, family, friends, and significant other in a whole new light.
Critic reviews

What do you need besides motivation and willpower? In Commit to Win, Heidi Reeder, PhD, unpacks over forty years of research by psychologists and economists to show that the key to reaching any goal, whether it’s to hit the gym more often or to finally quit that dead-end job, isn’t motivation, willpower, or determination. It’s commitment. Busting the myths most of us believe about commitment, Reeder shows that it all comes down to four variables.

Today, with stiff competition from the networked global economy, delivering extraordinary results is more important than ever. People are the problem. They're always the problem. If a business person goes home frustrated, if they talk with their significant other about it, if they lay awake at night stewing about it, inevitably the problem is some person at work - a colleague, subordinate, or boss. Handling people issues is every leader's major headache. It's what takes up the majority of their time and - more important - the bulk of their head space. Every leader can and must develop this most important of all management skills.

We may think we have to keep these realities under wraps and act as if we “have it all together”. But as Mike Robbins explains, we can work better, lead better, and be more engaged and fulfilled if - instead of trying to hide who we are- we show up fully and authentically.

Vital Friends
This book has helped me understand why I connect with some and not others. It has also helped me verbalize my choice of companions to others I respect. This book breaks down what every human is looking for in socialization efforts from oneself and from others. If you have ever felt alone in a crowd, you may enjoy this book.
