Publisher's summary

Tales from the Couch is collection of actual case studies and a primer on psychopathology as well as a captivating reflection on the human condition. Drawn from Dr. Bob Wendorf's 36-year career as a clinical psychologist, the book examines the lives of some of his most troubled patients in a project that aims to both educate and fascinate the listener. Clinical syndromes are described and dramatized by real-life case examples (altered only as necessary to protect patient confidentiality). Each of the 16 chapters focuses on a particular psychiatric diagnosis, including multiple personality disorder, Asperger's, and ADD.

The clinical picture and symptoms are described and explained, then brought to life by case examples taken from the author's practice. Dr. Wendorf presents the cases as a series of narratives - some dramatic, some humorous, most quite poignant. Along the way, the author offers his own reactions to the people and events described here and application to the general human condition as well.

Tales from the Couch offers compelling stories of extraordinary people, clinical conditions, and events - both in and out of the therapy hour - while providing insights into the nature of human beings, mental illness, and the psychotherapeutic enterprise.

Interesting and informative

Fascinating - oddly uplifting. I listened to this in one sitting, There is something I love about listening to someone who is highly proficient in a field talk about it. Would recommend to anyone interested in the topic.

Enjoyable, comfortable narrative

I very much enjoy reading about psychology. This book is a quality retelling of interesting patients.

Occasionally the author uses too much word play and cliches for my taste.

superficial

I found this book to be superficial and lacking and substance. well many of the stories would be really entertaining. there weren't a lot of foundational aspects and details to make it such.

Stories of serious human struggle along with amazing triumph

I am a graduate student soon to be licensed counselor, I enjoyed the tales from this experienced psychologist. His patients had serious issues but also amazing strengths.

Interesting Case Studies

Narration: Narrator speaks too fast...somewhat difficult to keep up with explanation subtitles.

Content: Good selection of prototypical cases representative of a variety of afflictions. Sensible advice.

Although narration is a bit hurried and a little difficult to follow, this audio is informative and warrants purchase.

Absolutely adore it!

I loved everything about this book. From the humor the author had, to the stories he shared, to the fascinating information about mental illness. It urged me to go back to college and finish it so I can chase my dream job—-a psychotherapist.
There is also a section in this book about depression. I have depression and honestly was in half active danger while reading this. That chapter saved me. There’s a small paragraph near the end of the chapter saying ‘if you’re reading this and depressed’ sort of thing—-and it hit me really hard. It stuck with me and made me feel better. I wish I could get a physical copy of this book for my bookshelf. I really really wish Dr Wendorf were still alive too, so he could see how his book had helped me along with many others I’m sure . I recommend this book to everyone. :( 10/10, Dr. Bob. 10/10. Rest In Peace you beautiful soul.

Way out of date

Desperately outdated, fully cringeworthy, verging on unlistenable… you don’t want this guy as your shrink!

This is a single clinician's personal experience

The author repeatedly states the limits of his training and the era of his practice.
