Beyond the mirror, the darkest fairy tales come alive....

For years, Jacob Reckless has enjoyed the Mirrorworld’s secrets and treasures.

Behind the mirror

I always suspected that the real world of fairy tales would be a lot more Grimm than Disney. This story sucked me right in and kept my interest to the end. The little behind-the-storybook scenes, such as what really happened to Sleeping Beauty, added texture to the story rather than distracting from it. Not a sweet story, and everybody doesn't live happily forever after, but I highly recommend it. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Great!

I don't understand how the other people who have reviewed this book found it hard to follow or uninteresting. This is the first Funke book I've listened to and it seems the rest are more geared towards kids but if you have good grasp of Grimm Fairy and Folk tales, you'll follow the story and love it! I can't wait for more, please tell me there will be more!

Good, But Not Great

The narrator wasn't my favorite. He couldn't capture individual voices, unless they had accents or were women (which all sounded similar) and had me confused about what was thought it said due to poor diction. While eloquent, I think Elliot is more suited to poetry reading than audio books. As for the story, Funke did her usual job of creating beautiful imagery, thought was very predictable and lacked complexity in the characters. I'd recommend this as a light listen to do chores with. Not something you need to focus on, but still entertaining.

uninspired.

a typical parallel world story. Jacob's brother William follows him into the mirror and is attacked and turned into a goyle (sp?) a santient being with skin of semiprecious stone, in his case jade. Jacob sets up to cure/save his brother and risk's his life in the process. you know how some series grab you and you can't wait to get to the next installmnet? This one did not. at the end I found myself thinking I te all ly don't care what happens next.
ok story but not worth perusing. The use the same melody in the Introduction as end as is used in the Fires of Heaven from Robert Jordan's Wheel of time series. I'm going but to relisten to that.

Boring

Nope, not for me! I liked the idea very much. I love the old fairytales and read them over and over again when I was a child (still do sometimes) and often imagined myself to be a part in them. And I absolutely LOVED John Connolly's The Book of Lost Things (read this instedad). So I did have quite high expectations.

I never got involved in the story. The characters never came to life. I didn't really care what would happen to them. Somehow the story lacked the fantasticness and the fairytaleness. There are dwarfs, shape shifters, love, hate, loss, magic, and a lot of references to the Grimm brother's stories but to me it was just boring, uninteresting and kind of stiff.

Mind you, it had nothing to do with the performance.

Page turner ... so to speak

What a wonderful, magical story. I couldn’t bear to stop listening. I think about this story all the time. It’s delicious.

Engaging

This is a great page Turner. This book takes traditional fairy tales and brings them to the present day. There is enough PG13 content to interest the young adult. The only thing I found difficult was that there was sometimes details missing that made you wonder what exactly was going on. I think part of this has to do with the fact that it's translated from German to English.
