Editorial reviews

Editors Select, February 2013 - Heather McDonald is hilarious. And whenever I make that statement it’s usually followed up by, “Who is Heather McDonald?” Anyone who watches E!’s Chelsea Lately will instantly recognize her as Chelsea’s brunette sidekick who often appears on the show’s 3-person round table of stand-up comedians. Heather is also one of the show’s writers and producers – and I categorize her talent to be on par with the Chelsea’s, Tina’s and Amy’s of the funny-woman world. As soon as I got my hands on the My Inappropriate Life manuscript I devoured it over the course of a weekend – and although it highlights Heather’s life as a wife and mother, I found my single, child-less self-concealing my laughter for all to hear in the subway car those two days. Each chapter is its own self-contained incident – perfect for “nuggetized” listening in short spurts. With chapters titled “Craigslisting for Family Pool Parties,” “The Real Housewives of Woodland Hills” and “One Nipple Out the Door” it’s hard to not get pulled into Heather’s totally relatable yet out of this world whirlwind charm. Her narration is icing on the cake. Jessica, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

In her hilarious New York Times best seller You’ll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again, Heather McDonald recounted her adventures as an unwilling virgin in Hollywood. Now happily married with three wonderful kids, she shows that life as a grown-up - even a pretend grown-up - has its challenges. Heather’s a working mom with parents who live next door, a sister who keeps asking for one of her still-fertile eggs, and friends who are up to more hijinks than even Heather can handle.

This self-proclaimed "Real Housewife of Woodland Hills" is determined to achieve A-list status (thus expanding her entourage beyond her three school-aged children and a house-husband who is infuriatingly bad at collecting neighborhood gossip) and defeat (or at least be accepted by) the mean neighborhood moms who judge her for taking her kids to a stripper pool party in Vegas. It’s a lot to juggle when she’s also battling her Chelsea Lately coworkers for the crudest and most elaborate practical jokes (don’t ask her about that "free" Vera Wang dress).

Just as laugh-out-loud funny and irreverent in her storytelling as she is on camera as Chelsea Handler’s partner-in-crime, in My Inappropriate Life Heather recounts her misadventures with a disarming candor all her own.

Critic reviews

"Most moms that you work with come to your desk uninvited and start showing you photos or telling you boring stories about their kids.... Not Heather McDonald. Instead she shows me photos of her new pool." (Jen Kirkman, author of I Can Barely Take Care of Myself)
"I don’t know any other person who can tell me they are ‘over trees’, mean it, make me laugh about it, and at the same time make me wonder if perhaps I am, too." (Sarah Colonna, author of Life as I Blow It)

Yawn

What would have made My Inappropriate Life better?

I'm sure Mrs. McDonald tells an amusing anecdote in person or on tv, but when she stretches a humorous moment out to a 10-minute book chapter it loses all of it's entertainment value. This book is like an extended version of the "what I did last summer" essay written by a half-clever high school kid.

Would you ever listen to anything by Heather McDonald again?

I've been an Audible customer practically since the site began and read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, humor and more serious offerings. This is the first book I've ever downloaded that I didn't finish. It's just not worth the time.

Don't listen to it....read it.

Will someone please tell me why writers insist on reading their own material when there are trained professionals that will make their work sound a million times better? (I know...money!) I think this book would have been entertaining but Heather McDonald's reading was distracting. Her reading is monotone and hesitant. She trips over words and pauses at odd moments making it difficult to follow along with her stories. Tina Fey, Rachel Dratch and Rob Lowe are examples of writers who are able to convey their work in a manner that has made me re listen to every one of their books. Heather McDonald's is not. My advice is to read this one.

Not that funny not that well done

What disappointed you about My Inappropriate Life?

I thought it would be funnier

What didn’t you like about Heather McDonald’s performance?

Her cadence was way off too much California influence for my midwest taste

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Just disappointment

Disappointed.

Utterly unsympathetic. Too hard to care about & I hate chardonnay. She chose her title well...

Awful

What could I have been thinking? Subject trivial. Comments really not funny. Did not find narration particularly good. What story??

Not at all like Tina Fey.... I've been led astray

Would you try another book from Heather McDonald and/or Heather McDonald?

I don't think I would read another one of Heather's books.

What could Heather McDonald have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I just didn't care for the subject matter.

Which character – as performed by Heather McDonald – was your favorite?

Heather of course.

What character would you cut from My Inappropriate Life?

Any and all mentions of "housewives"

Any additional comments?

Let me start out by saying that Heather McDonald was super funny during this book and I did find myself laughing, particularly when talking about the shenanigans with Chelsea and her coworkers. However, this book is not at all like Bossypants. While the previously mentioned Tina Fey masterpiece left me laughing, feeling empowered as a woman and overall just inspired, this book made me feel sad. The endless blather of "the housewives" and juicy gossip of other people's tragic lives started to really wear on me after a while. These petty, mildly amusing stories juxtaposed with stories of being a dedicated church goer and trying to be a better mom than everyone else she decides to have in her social circle left me feeling like this book pretty much describes what's wrong with America.

Wrote a book so she could talk about her kids for most of the chapters

Beware the annoying children impressions; wish this had been a better book. Waste of a credit.

Snooze

What would have made My Inappropriate Life better?

Chelsea Handler

What was most disappointing about Heather McDonald’s story?

The delivery

What didn’t you like about Heather McDonald’s performance?

She couldnt deliver a line?

What character would you cut from My Inappropriate Life?

Sorry Heather, your stories arent funny, and could have been.

Any additional comments?

I think she is fab on Chelsea Lately, but this sees like a money grab. So disappointing after Ross Matthews book. More guidance from Chelsea and the authors producers would have saved ths dull, poorly executed lack of entertainment.

Not my favorite

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I am only 2.5 hours into it and I am thinking about stopping. It's boring. There are a few funny parts here and there but it drones on. The story teller does not make the "funny" bits funny at all when re-telling them.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Not so much droning on about insignificant bits

How could the performance have been better?

I have never seen her on tv. Hope she is much better in action. Re-telling stuff on an audio book is not her thing.
