Publisher's Summary

Kristin Newman spent her 20s and 30s dealing with the stresses of her high-pressure job as a television comedy writer, and the anxieties of watching most of her friends get married and start families while she wrestled with her own fear of both. Not ready to settle down and yet loathe to become a sad-sack single girl, Kristin instead started traveling the world, often alone, for a few months each year, falling madly in love with attractive locals who provided moments of the love she wanted without the cost of the freedom she needed. She introduces listeners to the Israeli bartenders, Argentinian priests, Finnish poker players, and sexy Bedouins who helped her transform into "Kristin-Adjacent" on the road - a quieter, less judgmental, and, yes, sluttier version of herself at home. Ultimately, Kristin's adventures led her to a better understanding of what she was actually running away from at home and why every life hurdle seemed to put her on a transatlantic flight to the unknown. Equal parts laugh-out-loud storytelling; thoughtful, candid reflection; and wanderlust-inspiring travel tales, What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding is a compelling and hilarious debut that will have listeners scrambling to renew their passports.

I have never related to any book like I have with this one. Funny, entertaining and spot on.

Struggled to Finish

What disappointed you about What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding?

The author's logic while she stumbles through her path-finding mid-life struggle makes it difficult to root for her. It's kind of like watching someone try and feed a folded bill into a vending machine while they get infuriated that the machine won't accept it. She's adventurous, but I found myself rolling my eyes for most of the book.

What didn’t you like about Kristin Newman’s performance?

The author's tone when reading this book irritated me almost as much as the hollow story itself. It felt like she was rambling in a monotone cadence.

Any additional comments?

Worth the read/listen for people who are single and in their late 20s or early 30s. It will be reassuring to know that if someone with a compass that broken can find someone, you can too. Harsh? Yes. Honest? Yes.

Meh.

The valley girl style narration is more immature than than it is humorous, and based off the title, I never would have guessed that this book is simply filled with long, drawn out stories of passing sex with foreigners. Seems hypocritical to say the least. Travel is so much more than this and I was not inspired or impressed by it at all.

80% dating, 20% travel

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

This book was light and fun, but not what I was looking for. The focus was on her romances, not the places she went to.

Awesome fun read!!!!

I loved Kristin's passion, sense of adventure and learning about how she lived her life. The ending was somewhat expected but the stepmother (s) (without giving spoilers) storyline was much loved.
Well done!!!

hard to listen to

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Her voice was hard to listen to, i couldn't get far into the story because i just couldn't listen to her any longer. I'm disappointed because the title is so catchy i thought i would love this book but i just didn't. great title and good idea it just didn't workout for me. I've learned to listen to the sample before purchase.

What do you think your next listen will be?

i will go back to mysteries

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kristin Newman?

a calmer voice would be for a better listen

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

yes, there were some parts that i did enjoy just nothing comes to mind worth mentioning.

TMI

There was WAY too much information in this book about the author's sex experiences . Experiencing these activities is one thing, but hearing about it in a singsong cadence was so irritatingly gross. I would not recommend this one to anyone. At all.

Highly recommend!

Kristin Newman narrated her entertaining and energizing story of travel and love experiences perfectly. It's spicy with destinations and the people involved. It's a very relatable memoir in the sense at least one of her characters are going to remind you of someone you've known.

I also found it interesting that she's a comedy writer. It's nice to hear a story of a woman in such a non traditional field and see into the person behind the creation of scenes in shows you've watched. Loved it all around. Will definitely be listening to this audio book more than once!

Fun to Listen

Glad I got this in audio book version. It's much more entertaining to listen to than to read in my opinion. Fun stories and great narration!
