The benefits of restrictive diets like paleo and keto have been touted for more than a decade, but as renowned gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, or "Dr. B", illuminates in this groundbreaking audiobook, the explosion of studies on the microbiome makes it abundantly clear that elimination diets are in fact hazardous to our health. What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

From tuberculosis to bird flu and HIV to coronavirus, these infectious diseases share a common origin story: Human interaction with animals. Otherwise known as zoonotic diseases for their passage from animals to humans, these pathogens - both pre-existing ones and those newly identified - emerge and re-emerge throughout history, sparking epidemics and pandemics that have resulted in millions of deaths around the world. How did these diseases come about? And what - if anything - can we do to stop them and their fatal march into our countries, our homes, and our bodies?

Current medical wisdom advises that anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes should eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet. But in this revolutionary audiobook, Cyrus Khambatta, PhD, and Robby Barbaro, MPH, rely on a century of research to show that advice is misguided. While it may improve short-term blood glucose control, such a diet also increases the long-term risk for chronic diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, and fatty liver disease. The revolutionary solution is to eat a low-fat plant-based whole-food diet.

Critic Reviews
"Dr. Neal Barnard is one of the most important authorities of our time on nutrition, diet, and health, and Your Body in Balance is the book that can and will finally change your health for good. Dr. Barnard walks us through the most common and troublesome ailments which so many of us struggle with: hormone fluctuations, thyroid conditions, chronic and terminal illness, and mood disorders - with an eye towards research and solutions based in foods commonly available to us. We have the power to heal our bodies with the foods we eat, and Your Body in Balance is the resource with the wisdom to get us there. With recipes included, this may just be the only book you need on your shelf in order to change your body, your health, and your life." (Mayim Bialik, PhD, neuroscientist and actor)
"In Your Body in Balance, Dr. Neal Barnard distills the latest nutritional science down to bite-sized truths that will quickly transform nearly any life plagued by hormone dependent illness into one of vibrant wellness. Whether it's cramps, cancer, infertility, impotence, moodiness or menopause, Dr. Barnard masterfully navigates a clear path to your healthiest self." (Kristi Funk, MD, FACS, breast cancer surgeon, co-founder of Pink Lotus Breast Center, and best-selling author of Breasts: The Owner's Manual)
"Finally, an intelligent guide book that speaks up about the potent role our hormones play in every aspect of our lives. As an Olympic athlete, I never really thought of this connection until I dropped all animal foods from my diet and turned to whole plant foods to fuel my training. Almost overnight, my adaptation to training sped up (which is a function of our immune system directed by hormones), my PMS subsided, my breakouts cleared up, and my ability to focus and calm my nerves greatly improved. Dr. Barnard takes the reader on a revealing journey to uncover what's really behind some of our most common physical ailments and how to fix them in the blink of an eye." (Dotsie Bausch, Olympic silver medalist, 8X US National Champion, former world record holder, 2x Pan American Gold, and founder of Switch4Good)

I learned so much!
Even though I have studied nutrition of all forms but mostly plant based nutrition recently, I was blown away by all the information in this book!
Dr. Neal Barnard makes it all very easy to understand. His book is written well with facts and data to back his what he’s saying.
I’ve personally suffered with PCOS and infertility. I took fertility drugs to be able to conceive. Though I am forever grateful I was able to have my child, I wish I had known how to heal my body and fertility without the medications.
If you want to have an understanding of your hormones and how they can be affected by what you eat, then this book is for you!

Amazing
He explains the “why” and not just the “what to do” for your health. He tells you all the studies and the doctors and scientists so you can look it up yourself. He lets you know when it may not be true etc. This shows credibility that he isn’t just saying what he wants you to hear, just giving the facts. He also explains everything in a way that even I can understand! My favorite is how each chapter covers a different health topic. That way it isn’t all blended together. And if I want to refresh my memory on one specific thing, I can find that chapter instead going through the entire book again. I already recommended this book to everyone I know.

Book is good but medical terms needed edited
I loved the content of the book. Dr Barnard takes complicated issues and puts them in easily understood terms. There is a lot of information packed into a really nice package.
The only real issue I had with the performance of this book, although the voice is pleasing and for the most part is a good listen, neither the narrator, nor his editor apparently put enough effort into finding out how to pronounce medical terms. Largely it was issues of putting the emPHASis on the wrong sylLABle, and for example, “heme” does not have 2 syllables. It was rather irritating to me. I rather wish Dr Barnard had read it himself.

Deceitful
You are mislead by the book cover. The reader is lead to believe that he is purchasing a book about Food, Hormones and Health. That this book is based on new science. I read up to chapter 4 and had to stop as I was extremely disappointed. This is a book for the sole purpose of pushing a vegan low fat diet. The so called science is nothing but testimonials of people with medical issues that have been supposedly cured from a vegan diet. Many of their stories say they go back to eating meat and their symptoms reoccur. One man supposedly even died after he miraculously was cancer free, then started eating meat again.
It would be a travesty if a person with a terminal illness were to read this book , then ignore a doctor's advice because they are understandably so desperate that they want to believe, after reading this book, that vegan diet will save them. Of course the writer has the typical disclaimer to listen to your doctor, but also writes that one of the doctors called the disappearance of a patient's cancer a miracle after a vegan diet was started.
The writer refers to research that he has cherry picked to fit his desired results and leaves out the parts that don't favor veganism. He also writes that you can feel results in just days, and then later in the book warns that if you slip and eat meat, you could have ill effects for weeks after. So which one is it?
It's obvious that the word Vegan was intentionally left off the cover to trick carnivores into buying it. This tells me a lot about the writer.

Absolutely nothing new
This book is a rehash of previous books. If you have never read a nutrition book extolling the benefits of a plant-based diet the info in this book might be new to you. Otherwise, look elsewhere for a more current and thorough treatment, e.g., How Not to Die/How Not to Diet.

basic diet book
I thought I was going to learn a whole lot more about hormones than I did. This book was a watered down, summarized, cliffsnotes version of other diet books that promote veganism. Don't get me wrong, I like veganism, but this was not so much focused on hormones as I was told it would be.

A book everyone should hear/read
I love and appreciate Dr. Barnard’s work in this world. This book is great for everyone since we all probably face some sort of hormonal imbalance and many of us are unaware of the hidden toxins and unnecessary hormones in our food (as well as in our household products and environment). Hopefully we will soon wake up to this and realize it’s all about the food we choose to fuel our bodies. Dr. B once again drives home the importance and all the wonderful benefits of plant-based eating. Thank you for helping to change the way my family lives!
