The best marriage book ever written

On the face of it, Dr. Schnarch's Passionate Marriage approach (especially the part where he connects sex therapy to marital therapy) is philosophical, complicated, fluffy, and unclear. There is no step by step training in communication or negotiation. There is now teaching on understanding the differences between men and women. There's just a topography of what the lay of the land really looks like and some clues on how to get there. The prize at the bottom of the Cracker Jack box is not just great sex, or a great marriage, but discovering that what one has within themselves is a great self and that marriage is the dojo wherein that person grows and develops into all that God intended them to be. In reality it's a profoundly simple approach, that is also very very difficult to pull off, but well worth the effort and sacrifice. I imagine that most people won't have the courage to go there but I hope that I can and will. No pain, no gain; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown.

Good book, less than good production value

This was a great book. It was pretty annoying to hear the engineers/production staff snickering in the background when the author said something funny. It felt like I was being spied on while listening.

A good companion to Passionate Marriage

What made the experience of listening to Secrets of a Passionate Marriage the most enjoyable?

The author presented a good overview of his book of the same title.

What other book might you compare Secrets of a Passionate Marriage to and why?

This is not an audio version of the book, but it offers a broader perspective to its content.

Which character – as performed by David Schnarch – was your favorite?

Himself

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The idea that our hunger for intimacy in my marriage can lead us to grow in our love and knowledge of each each other in profound dimensions.

Any additional comments?

Listeners still need to read the book. I was hoping this would include more of its content. I read the book a a few years ago, and I hoped an audio book would make it easier to share it with my wife. Car travel presents a good opportunity in this regard.

Here's my issue with this recording...

This was not a book. It was a lecture.. a rambling lecture. It was like a stream of conscious thought.

Not the book...

I deeply appreciate the content. This audiobook is more a live recording of a 4-hour seminar than a reading of a book. I was expecting the book so 4 star review. Content is great though.

A compassionate approach

As a married person currently going through a prolonged difficult phase of emotional gridlock, I have despaired my relationship with my wife had reached a chronically tense level of dysfunctional patterns of betrayal, accusation, rejection, and mutual hurt beyond our collective ability to reconcile.

On the advice of my therapist, I bought the Passionate marriage book and began exploring what seemed to me increasingly self confronting realizations which were often difficult for me to process without giving in to the myopic arguments of my own internal negative perspective.

In a recent experience of seeing my shadow I began to search and identify pathological aspects of myself in a way that was undercutting what fragile ability I have to self validate in a way that has frequently derailed my past attempts to lift the veil of denial from my eyes enough so that I might be able to reestablish integrity in my life and relationship.

I realized how poorly differentiated my relationship has become, but I felt either too much the victim or persecutor to feel capable of approaching responsibility and speaking my own truth with love and grace, continuing instead to indulge destructive addictions and self sabotage.

I decided to try listening to the audiobook for Passionate in part because I find it helpful to hear the voice behind the message as a means of clarifying the tone of the message being delivered. Sure enough, hearing Dr. Schnarch’s narrative helped remove the perception of some of what seemed activating for me and facilitated a more powerful understanding of the passionate marriage approach. As I listened I felt humbled, less alienated, and deeply moved by bravery and love to seek out the best in my self to share with my partner for so many years.

While I cannot know whether implementing differentiation in my marriage will lead to its continuation, I do feel it is by far the most loving way I have been gifted to empower each of us towards a more certain appreciation for our individual values and the chance for an authentic intimate experience of each other.

Thank you Dr. Schnarch and Sounds True for finding and sharing a bridge of hope and compassion for those in desperate need of the miracle hidden in Passionate Marriage. And for all the Love Warriors out there thirsty for a commitment approach based on self respect and putting love into action; be brave and love well.

A daring approach to relationship growth

This book gave me a fresh new perspective on conflict, communication, sex and self development and How it's all connected. The biggest ahah I got was ...the biggest mistake we can make is avoiding conflict because we can use it to learn how to manage our own anxieties instead of needing our partner to sooth us, this setting them free and this can create fundamental change. Keeping the peace is actually risking the future of our relationship.
