Publisher's summary

In What Makes Us Healthy? best-selling author and internationally renowned speaker Caroline Myss delivers a thought-provoking live lecture on the current state of our health, exploring the mystical forces that create disease or wellness. Describing our evolving - and often misguided - relationship with well-being, Myss explains that to truly be healthy, we need a better understanding of ourselves and the factors that influence our lives.

She shows us that we must move away from the illusion that the physical world of money, sex, power, and self-esteem has more authority than the inner world of the psyche and soul. That it is, in fact, our ego that blocks our truth and creates imbalances that lead to illness.

Describing the language of transformation as a sophisticated spiritual journey, Myss shows that healing is an act of the soul: our mind governs our healing, but it is the soul that must lead the way. She teaches us that to truly heal, we must look at the energy of our lives and focus inward - toward the soul and away from the mind.

Wellness ; Real and Whole

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Many of us have health coaches or aspire to improve our health. Myss addresses health as a return to mind , body , spirit. The misstep we have taken as a society has been to include mind, body and to simply ignore the spirit aspect of our overall health. A return to health must include all three, and Myss speaks clearly to this need.

What other book might you compare What Makes Us Healthy? to and why?

There are numerous books on wellness, whole health and countless fabrications on getting fit , slim or eating right.( Dr. Andrew Weil stands out).. Few examine health as a construct of spirit and mind health and healing as well as Myss. In the 80's, the Yale surgeon Bernie Seigal wrote of love and miracles and health and his' I Can' cancer groups became foundational to wellness. In the 90's, author and cardiologist, Dean Ornish (Eat More , Weigh Less) was instrumental in returning our attention to the connection of health, creating community and emotional support. In this ever evolving topic of health, I can think of no one as fundamentally conscious of the complexities of responding to mind , body spirit than Myss and her writings on health and healing, and turning our attention to Grace.

What a great listen!

I have to say, i'm a Caroline Myss' addict. Can't have enough of her books, and i'm constantly listening over and over again to her audios. I can't have enough of learning about mystical laws, and especially from people, like Myss who respect other cultures and religions. Her language may seem a bit strong for many, but the Truths she tells are food for thought and spirit. Love this program. Love Myss.

Bitter with baggage...OMG NEGATIVE energy

What disappointed you about What Makes Us Healthy??

This was awful, I paid to be talked down to, ridiculed, and beat up...really.

What could Caroline Myss have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Try a little positive energy...really. Caroline you need help...

What didn’t you like about Caroline Myss’s performance?

Bitter bitter and more bitter. What a total worthless time waster.

What character would you cut from What Makes Us Healthy??

Caroline needs to cut her self from the book...that would make it more worthwhile. All that negative energy just kills anything good that could come from this discussion.

Potent Subject - But Maybe Not the Best Execution

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I can understand the negative reviews of this audiobook / lecture. Caroline Myss does meander here and there and I lose her train of thought now and then. It's apparent that Caroline knows what she wants to say but something is left out. I think this could have been edited a bit for repetition. Caroline pulls no punches in this one - it's hard and almost confrontational, underscoring the urgency of her message. She starts strong - meanders - and ends strong. This is the voice of someone who is concerned about the state of humankind and it shows. I felt this in my gut.

What was one of the most memorable moments of What Makes Us Healthy??

It's all about the truth and being true to ourselves...hover over me God.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Caroline Myss?

Of course. But would be good to figure out how to differentiate one book from another! There are similar themes.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Caroline is one of the most passionate speakers there is.

Unscientific, illogical and mean

There is tons of wonderful information about the mind/body connection and brain science which she obviously has not read. Somatic mindfulness is key in healing, as is compassion and understanding of gut/brain health. Scolding and insulting people has never been shown to be helpful or healing. I couldn't get very far in the book because of how nasty she is. She displays her ignorance right off the bat by talking about the Renaissance and saying people didn't realize a big cultural change was happening at the time. That's patently untrue and uninformed.

When One is Very Illl, Being Yelled at Isn't OK

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If CM would calm the f*** down and deliver like she does when Prince Charles in in the audience.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Haven't made it there

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Caroline Myss?

Her calm, gentler alter-ego.

Any additional comments?

The story meanders about from a whiny dude with AIDS she wants to kick in the bum, to the Great Depression, to WW2, to a lonely bitter housewife making a spectacle of herself. Usually I can follow her, I loved Defy Gravity + Entering the Castle and I like to her her ideas, but please present them using a less entangled thread, and a kinder voice. Some listeners are very ill and having a voice that gives the same reaction as a fire alarm is NOT healing.
