Publisher's summary

How to Be Yourself is the best audiobook you'll ever listen to about how to conquer social anxiety.

"...a groundbreaking road map to finally being your true, authentic self." - Susan Cain, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author of Quiet

Up to 40% of people consider themselves shy. You might say you're introverted or awkward, or that you're fine around friends but just can't speak up in a meeting or at a party. Maybe you're usually confident but have recently moved or started a new job, only to feel isolated and unsure.

If you get nervous in social situations - meeting your partner's friends, public speaking, standing awkwardly in the elevator with your boss - you've probably been told, "Just be yourself!" But that's easier said than done - especially if you're prone to social anxiety.

Weaving together cutting-edge science, concrete tips, and the compelling stories of real people who have risen above their social anxiety, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen proposes a groundbreaking idea: you already have everything you need to succeed in any unfamiliar social situation. As someone who lives with social anxiety, Dr. Hendriksen has devoted her career to helping her clients overcome the same obstacles she has.

With familiarity, humor, and authority, Dr. Hendriksen takes the listener through the roots of social anxiety and why it endures, how we can rewire our brains through our behavior, and - at long last - exactly how to quiet your Inner Critic, the pesky voice that whispers, "Everyone will judge you." Using her techniques to develop confidence, think through the buzz of anxiety, and feel comfortable in any situation, you can finally be your true, authentic self.

Excellent text for people with "S"ocial anxiety.

It is clear from the beginning that Ms. Hendriksen knows her stuff. The tone and expressiveness of her reading are highly accomplished. Additionally, it is also clear that she cares about her readers (and patients), or readers as pseudo-patients I suppose you could say. The text addresses some causes of Social Anxiety and also offers strategically woven research- and evidence-baed techniques for coping with our Social Awkwardness and Social Anxiety. As one who has suffered from Social Anxiety for over 20 years, the stories of different peoples' experiences are helpful but may not resolve my own 20 years of Social Anxiety. Nevertheless, I found "How To Be Yourself" an excellent text for people with Social Anxiety and others looking for inspiration, techniques, and just acceptance of who we are.

This book gave some practical tips on how to handle being socially anxious and start easing into being yourself. I was in good company with the case studies that she shared and the science that backs up why I am the way that I am. I felt heard and encouraged!

She's a Rock Star

I am an old lady who has read and listened to psychology since almost the beginning of psychology's time. I have 357 audio books on Audible only about psychology. We do a bang up job about how depressing any kind neurodifferiation there is. This was uplifting, warm, kind hearted, and a compassionate look into a serious problem. A wonderful read and listen. I hope she writes more

Made me be more aware of my thoughts and forget the anxiety all together

I read this book when I was struggling to talk in meetings at work. I used to think about my anxiety without focusing on what’s happening in the meeting. This book made me more productive

The Best Resource for Overcoming Social Anxiety

This is the best resource for social anxiety that I have ever found. I had several epiphanies while listening to this. The author made some bold and insightful statements backed by science concerning how to overcome social anxiety. One large realization is that social anxiety does not mean that you have a social skill deficient. Another realization is the importance of staying in social situations that make us feel uncomfortable- instead of avoiding them or making them shorter. Avoiding helps in the immediate to reduce anxiety but has detrimental effects in the long term. If you struggle with social anxiety, please read this book!
