Publisher's Summary

Robert Lustig’s 90-minute YouTube video Sugar: The Bitter Truth has been viewed more than two million times. Now, in this much anticipated book, he documents the science and the politics that has led to the pandemic of chronic disease over the last 30 years.

In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control.

To help us lose weight and recover our health, Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation. Compelling, controversial, and completely based in science, Fat Chance debunks the widely held notion to prove "a calorie is NOT a calorie", and takes that science to its logical conclusion to improve health worldwide.

"Heavy on science, as compelling as The China Study"

The science is a bit hard to get through, but it's good science and well presented. I've been reading every nutrition book I can get my hands on in the past several years to try and understand what is actually good nutrition despite all the conflicting and confusing information out there. This book is in my top 2 with The China Study out of dozens. The author gives good sound advice on how to navigate the treacherous food landscape we all live in to eat and drink our way to better health.

    "This book is incredible!"

The first part of being healthier is understanding the chemistry of the body and the effects that different foods have on our bodies. This book has been part of a lifestyle change that has resulted in feeling healthier - a byproduct of this has also been weight loss.

"Great explanations, but no new actionable advice"

Fat Chance does a truly stellar job explaining the science behind how we get fat, but has no new information, suggestions or options for how we can break the cycle of addiction, hormone resistance and other factors that make us overweight. If you're interested in the science behind human energy metabolism, this book is worthy of at least TEN stars, not a mere five! But if you expect to hear something beyond "eat right and exercise" when it comes to actionable advice to combat your addiction to processed foods and lethargy, you'll be sorely disappointed. Still, I recommend this book for everyone fighting the good fight because it will demystify a LOT of how the body responds to various types of food intake, and that can equip you to be more effective at everything you do from that point on as it pertains to winning the ongoing battle.

Great book, well worth the listen. Just great data and facts told well. Lined up well with the documentary "Fed Up".

    "Great Book"

I enjoyed this book very much. While some of the terminology is a little difficult to follow, there is a an amazing amount of good information backed by sound research.

    "Great insight!"

A lot of what he said is things I knew in general concept by now, but hearing the actual science behind it was fascinating. Half way through, I ordered the written book so I could listen again and make notes.

    "I am convinced (english/português)"

The book spends a lot of pages educating the reader about the mechanisms of action of various hormones and enzymes involved in the metabolism and the development of metabolic syndrome. Part of the book, I would say that the first third, can get a little dull because of that, but throughout its development, it is clear that the concepts are essential for the reader to understand the formation of fat.

The book is very educational so far as to remove the fat person`s guilt and take some of the blame to the rightful owners, the ones who manages and produces food filled with highly toxic substances and huge propensity to addiction, and the government has not the wrist and the political will to regulate.

The book goes through various diet types and points out what they all have in common, that is the absence of processed sugar, which is the key part of a successful diet. The key to health, he points out, is to eat unprocessed foods and daily exercise. He demonstrates this based on numerous studies cited in the course of the entire book, identified in the Appendix, as a master's thesis was, but with a more irreverent language.

It is a very educational book. I think it's valuable information, unless the author has told a very convincing lie with a very well mounted mosaic of data and scientific papers arranged to meet his fallacy. Otherwise, it is likely to be true and should help anyone who intends to achieve a healthier life, longevity and respect to one`s body.

    Eu estou convencido
