Publisher's summary

Raiders stole his childhood. It's time Corin made them pay.

When his parents are murdered, and his sister taken by raiders, Corin's world crashes in on him. Wild and willful, he joins the elite Wolf Regiment but swiftly falls foul of its swordmaster, the brutal Taskala.

The regiment becomes embroiled in a vicious civil war between the sultan of Permio and rebel tribesmen. Corin, caught in the treacherous power play between rival factions and corrupt leaders, struggles to survive. Torn between his quest for vengeance and growing hatred for the sadistic Taskala, Corin has to intervene when the woman he loves becomes the latest target of Taskala's wrath.

Gray Wolf is the first book in a trilogy featuring Corin an Fol, a man chosen by the gods to walk a dark path. The novel forms part of the Legends of Ansu, a spellbinding fantasy series. If you like tough action featuring gritty characters set to a vivid fantasy backdrop of war, and vengeance, then you are going to love this new tale by JW Webb.

Grey Wolf

I found myself enjoying this book. The story line was interesting and a little mysterious. The characters were vividly detailed. I would have liked a little more detail regarding surroundings but other than that the story on the whole was good. Choosing McDermott for the narrator was a very good choice his voice is clear and strong. I also love his accent.

New Author + Favorite Narrator = Great Book!

JW Webb is a new author for me. The writing is so vivid and the imagery makes the characters and scenes jump off of the page.

Andrew McDermott does an excellent job giving each character a distinct voice. You can really tell he has such passion for his work. His accent is a perfect fit for this story. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Accent

I love the narration and accent. It helps me to envision a different land as I drift away on Corins adventure. The high emotional moments blend well in this surprisingly good discovery of self and realistic new world.

An entertaining pseudo-Celtic fantasy

A highly entertaining pseudo-Celtic fantasy in which a young boy, who sees his father killed and his sister taken by raiders, chooses to become a warrior so he can exact revenge and perhaps save his sister. While the plot isn't overly complex and it's not really anything we haven't read before, it's a lot of fun. Corin is well-drawn, the gags come thick and fast, as does the action. It's like a Marvel movie - it won't win any art awards, but we'll still all line up to see it. Kudos to the narrator, whose Scottish accent adds an authenticity to the whole shebang. You can tell he's enjoying reading it as much as we are listening.

Grey Wolf - the forging of a warrior

I really enjoyed this fantasy medieval adventure. Grey Wolf describes the growth of Corin an Fol from an aimless, belligerent and lazy teen who was orphaned by pirate raiders to a battle hardened warrior in the elite Grey Wolves Regiment. Corin has promised himself that he will avenge the slaughter of his family and the abduction of his sister, but makes no plans for this future. Then the massive blacksmith Polin, himself a retired member of the Wolves, sees something in his sullen and shiftless apprentice that prompts Polin to leave Corin in a village to seek out the Wolves. Great atmospheric writing, great battle scenes and a very unlikable protagonist in Corin an Fol who is totally self centred, lacks any true curiosity and has a real attitude problem. Corin's personality doesn't endear him to the reader but that doesn't detract from this amazingly good read.

The narration by Andrew McDermott is superb. The right Celtic accent and the brilliant characterisation make this a truly unstoppable audio experience.

Great Sword and Sorcery Story

I really enjoyed listening to this book. As I've mentioned before, anything Andrew McDermott narrates is a book I'll listen to! This story fortunately can stand on its own as well! The characters are interesting and well developed with room for growth in the future stories, as this is book 1 I'm sure there will be many more to enjoy. The story world is detailed and interesting. The book is well written and I recommend it for sword and sorcery or fantasy fans! I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!

Engaging

Engaging fantasy story. Well narrated. Good example of the genre. Some of the characters felt like they lacked some depth, but I feel like there is more to come in the next book. Well worth a listen.

“Gods aren’t interested in what we want. They’re only happy when we’re dancing to their tune.”

Plenty of action and adventure in this one! Pretty brutal at times, so not for the feint-hearted!
I really enjoyed listening to it. Andrew does a great job at storytelling, although would prefer a little more differentiation between the character voices.
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.

Old school fantasy

This is the first Legends of Ansu book I've listened to, and it's been quite a pleasant surprise. Nothing earth-shatteringly original, but the story motors along nicely, and shoehorns a lot of narrative into a fairly short book. It's refreshing to not have to commit to a 25 hour plus story that might have been told in 12 hours. Here is a story told in under 7 hours, with admirable economy. Andrew McDermott's narration is for the most part excellent, although there is only limited differences between most of the characters, making it hard to tell who is speaking in passages with lots of dialogue. I'm very keen to get onto the next book in the series.

Interesting story line

Interesting story line but I dont think this book was for my though because I kept getting distracted and couldn't really get into the book itself. It took me ages to get through the book, I actually went and read some others in between listening to this one.

Narrator has such an Irish accent that doesn't seem like it belongs to this book, though it was still somewhat enjoyable to listen to.

I know many people will enjoy this book, and some friends I know will so I will be telling them they should check this book out for themselves (never go by just what people say, cause everyone has their own tastes and styles whether it is books or movies).

I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving am honest review.

A great story

I really enjoyed this story, set in an interesting universe the main characters are likable and the story seems to move along at a nice pace. My only little niggle is that he seems to get very good with the sword very quickly but it doesn't take away from the story in any way. The narrator does a great job at bringing the characters to life and I am looking forward to the next installment.
