When the body of a young man is found stuffed into the tomb of a medieval knight, Parish Constable Daniel Haze is tasked with investigating his first solo murder case. Suspicion instantly falls on the only stranger to arrive in the village of Birch Hill just before the crime took place, but the American captain proves to be an unexpected asset. A former soldier and a skilled surgeon, Jason Redmond is not only willing to assist Haze with the investigation but will risk his own safety to apprehend the killer.

With no suspects, no motive, and few leads to follow, Redmond and Haze must solve the crime before one of them becomes the murderer’s next victim.

Murder in the Crypt is the exciting first installment of this Victorian murder mystery series set in a quaint British village.

I really enjoyed this book. Not a heavy read but kept my interest throughout. I liked the characters and how relationships were developed. The story kept my interest throughout. I will look forward to enjoying time with these characters again in their next adventure.

Enjoyable

A bit chatty and over explaining. The description of the village, the characters and dialogues did not rimg true to me, everything seemed too modern.

Not quite there

A wonderful, Regency period murder mystery with a touch of American thrown into the mix. I hate Virtual voice so love that I got to get totally immersed in a really good audiobook! The story is very well written and the narrator successfully pulls you into this period mystery with their exceptional story telling gift! You won't want to miss this new series! Book 1 is amazing! ❤

Love that they used a HUMAN narrator!

The plot was okay but the narration dragged it down.
I feel the novel may have been more engaging if there was a different narrator.

Story okay, narration monotonous.

Good descriptions of characters covering American civil war experiences and how this might result in settling in the UK in 1840s. Also interesting plot with Lords and their servants in this era.

Life in the 1840s

Not bad, though it seemed modern in language and attitude in many spots. I skipped forward a few spots when it bogged down in rehashing or over-explaining. I might have enjoyed it much more if the narration hadn’t been so melodramatic and robotic. Still, I tried to ignore that as much as possible in order to follow the solving of the mystery. I wish she’d given Daniel a stronger voice. It sort of became dreary and feminine midway through the book. Still, the story is okay, and I’ll probably look into another in the series

It’s okay
