Publisher's summary

In Fit for Success, author Nick Shaw details the habits successful people have in common and how we can develop those same habits to thrive - despite our obstacles. Using what’s he’s learned over the past decade, Nick has helped top athletes and hundreds of thousands of people around the world through his company Renaissance Periodization to look, feel, and perform their best.

But it wasn’t until 2020 - when his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer and facing the fallout of treatment for months through COVID-19 - that he had to really lean into the habits he was teaching and put them to the ultimate test. This book vividly outlines the lessons he’s learned, some valuable takeaways, and most importantly, how you can use these habits to build your own path to success.

"For seekers of knowledge who want a concise and enjoyable read that covers the spectrum of philosophy and psychology, Nick Shaw provides a book on leadership and holistic living that is both educational and inspiring." (Daniel Luna, retired Navy SEAL and leadership coach)

"This book feels like it was made for 2020 - a year full of adversity. Its contents, however, are timeless. I've found my long-term success as a husband, father, businessman, and multi-year CrossFit Games champion through the constant pursuit of behaviors and habits that make me better than I was yesterday. In this book, Nick has skillfully drawn a road map for creating and implementing those habits, so you can find success as well.” (Rich Froning, eight-time CrossFit Games champion)

“Success cannot by guaranteed, but by applying the simple practices described in this book, you can meaningfully increase your chances of obtaining it. It’s not a magic fix, but it’s a great start.” (Mike Israetel, Olympic nutrition consultant, competitive bodybuilder, and PhD in sport physiology)

decent but could be improved

Overall decent book, but for me it was a hard listen, due to the many citations/quotes. To me at times it almost felt like a research report. I would have enjoyed it more if there was more of his personal mindset/thinking.

Very superficial book about a major topic

Extremely important topic and this book covers the Main parts, but there is no tools for improving upon them. I know that might not be the point of the book, but If you already know a little of mindfullness and its powers, then you should Get a deeper diving book. This book is great If you never heard of mindfullness. It makes you aware of the topics.

Summary of others

This book is simply a compilation or summary of the high points from other great books regarding success. There is nothing novel here except the conversation points, which are arguably not earth shattering either. Spend your time reading the other books. They are more poignant, thought provoking, and have much lore depth.

dull

its just a synopisis of other peoples research. its just referencing other books and using their examples. its like a cliffnotes for other self help books which most ive read already.

Summary for Success

If you are new to self improvement reading this is a great place to start as it lists many of the great books to obtain foundation skill sets and goals from. This book however was a hard listen for me as the constant quotations made it feel like a report of every other authors work and mindset. When I picked up this title knowing of Shaw’s work field I expected a revolutionary book about the nutrition and health required to succeed. I do not feel the genre is saturated with mental toughness and guidelines but I think he missed a brand new opportunity to bring his expertise in nutrition and training to help people not only succeed but be physically prepared to do so. All the other mentioned authors have great mental hacks and building blocks to obtain success but the physical toll on the body and mind is rarely mentioned while achieving goals. I honestly enjoyed the podcast sections in the book and felt as if he just wrote about what he spoke in those sections the book could improve dramatically. I hope a new book from him will be self generated and more personal to his journey and accomplishments.
