Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture.

What studies clearly now show - and what Dr. B preaches with his patients - is that gut health is the key to boosting our metabolism, balancing our hormones, and taming the inflammation that causes a host of diseases.

Story
Aging - not cancer, not heart disease - is the underlying cause of most human death and suffering. The same cascade of biological changes that renders us wrinkled and gray also opens the door to dementia and disease. We work furiously to conquer each individual disease, but we never think to ask: Is aging itself necessary? Nature tells us it is not: There are tortoises and salamanders who are spry into old age and whose risk of dying is the same no matter how old they are.

General overview of aging and aging research
- By RealWoman8 on 03-31-21
By: Andrew Steele
Publisher's summary
From the author of the New York Times best-seller The Plant Paradox comes a groundbreaking plan for living a long, healthy, happy life.
From the moment we are born, our cells begin to age. But aging does not have to mean decline. World-renowned surgeon Dr. Steven Gundry has been treating mature patients for most of his career. He knows everyone thinks they want to live forever, until they hit middle age and witness the suffering of their parents and even their peers. So how do we solve the paradox of wanting to live to a ripe old age - but enjoy the benefits of youth?
This groundbreaking audiobook holds the answer. Working with thousands of patients, Dr. Gundry has discovered that the “diseases of aging” we most fear are not simply a function of age; rather, they are a byproduct of the way we have lived over the decades. In The Longevity Paradox, he maps out a new approach to aging well - one that is based on supporting the health of the “oldest” parts of us: the microorganisms that live within our bodies.
Our gut bugs - the bacteria that make up the microbiome - largely determine our health over the years. From diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s to common ailments like arthritis to our weight and the appearance of our skin, these bugs are in the driver’s seat, controlling our quality of life as we age.
The good news is, it’s never too late to support these microbes and give them what they need to help them - and you - thrive. In The Longevity Paradox, Dr. Gundry outlines a nutrition and lifestyle plan to support gut health and live well for decades to come. A progressive take on the new science of aging, The Longevity Paradox offers an action plan to prevent and reverse disease as well as simple hacks to help anyone look and feel younger and more vital.

The Omni Diet is the culmination of a decade-long quest by Amen to study the relationship between food and the body. It's an easy-to-follow plan based on a 70/30 plant-to-protein model. This is not a restrictive diet or another page in the high-protein vs. vegetarian diet wars, but a universal map to better health, one that Tana has distilled into a lean six-week program.

Is it possible to eat well, drink wine, and still lose weight? Melanie Avalon is living proof that it's not only possible, it's unbelievably simple and straightforward. It's all about the what (mostly paleo, but she's not a monster about it), the when (believe it or not, brief fasting can mean freedom rather than restriction), and the wine (red wine can be a secret bullet for weight loss - who knew?). It's a combination that Avalon discovered after years of self-experimentation and intense research on the mechanics of body fat regulation.

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the world - greater than both back pain and heart disease. One example, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is the most common autoimmune disease, affecting 1% of the US population, and almost 68 million people worldwide. Conventional medicine tends to treat arthritis with strong, gut-damaging, immune-suppressing pain medications, temporarily relieving the symptoms of the disease without addressing its root causes.

Have you wondered why some 60-year-olds look and feel like 40-year-olds and why some 40-year-olds look and feel like 60-year-olds? While many factors contribute to aging and illness, Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn discovered a biological indicator called telomerase, the enzyme that replenishes telomeres, which protect our genetic heritage. Dr. Blackburn and Dr. Elissa Epel's research shows that the length and health of one's telomeres are a biological underpinning of the long-hypothesized mind-body connection.

confusing
Author struggles to keep his message consistent. One chapter iron is bad, then broccoli is good source of iron and that's good, one chapter we should demonize saturated fat, then consumption of saturated fat linked to reduction of deaths by any cause. Good insights on sources of all aging and that you dont have to have problems with heart, brain and muscles as you age.

Phenomenal information that can save your life!
Kudos to Dr. Gundry! To divulge the secrets of the gut and its influence over us is incredibly fascinating and quite a shift in medical science. Immense thanks for putting it all together!

Our bodies do not have to breakdown as we age.
There are two reasons why I was interested in listening to this book. The first reason was that my dental hygienist recommended this book. Her enthusiasm regarding the book was overwhelming. I was anxious to listen to it based on the title. The second reason was that a friend of mine recently died after retiring for a very short time. She was only 62 years old. She ate out a lot, was over weight, and did not exercise. I could see that taking good care of one’s self may very much be important for a long life. So I was very interested to see what Dr. Steven Gundry had to say on the topic of the Longevity Paradox, How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age.
I really enjoyed listening to the book and I am looking forward to putting his ideas into practice to see if it makes a difference in how I feel. I am 72 years old and have a few issues I could work on to look and feel better. I have upped my vitamin C intake to see if it makes a difference in my crappie skin.

Live Long and... you know the rest...
Dear Reader, If you have aches and pains, if you sigh over the idea of growing old just when life is just getting interesting, or if you are young and wondering why you are overweight, unhealthy, and your mood is less than joyous, READ THIS BOOK! And then do it. This is hard science with an easy demeanor, cheerful advice with no nonsense results. I am taking this on as my new direction for life... me and my sweet Gut Buddies are going to Live Long and Prosper. Thanks Dr. Gundry! (p.s. nice job reading your material...you are a delight to listen to!)
