Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

The issues that make monogamous dating daunting for people of color - shaming and exclusion by white partners, being fetishized, having realities of everyday racism ignored - occur in polyamorous relationships, too, and trying "not to see race" only makes it worse. To make polyamorous communities inclusive, we must all acknowledge our part in perpetuating racism and listen to people of color.

Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

Great book with great examples
This is the best book ever. This book made me more confident in my decision. Since I am newly in a poly relationship, I was still on the fence. Every other open relationship book made poly/ open relationships out to be the only right decision, somewhat biased, or way too defensive. This book gave many wonderful examples of possible breakups. It was eye opening, a great new perspective, and felt like it was telling the truth. It validated my feelings of being wondering if my poly relationship was right And now that my feelings were validated, it gave me more confidence in being my self and continue my poly relationship.

Do not read if you are new to polyamory
While there are some useful insights in this book, the terminology and personal opinions of the author can be very damaging. As a polyamorous person of 12 years and community educator I really wanted this book to be a good resource. I cannot recommended it to anyone new to polyamory. The terminology the author uses is very different from most of polyamory culture and this would give a horrible introduction to newer people.

Author vilifies Monogamous relationships
The author uses this book to glorify Polyamoury while vilifying Monogamous relationships. It's fairly blatant and irresponsible. This book is upsetting to read or listening to if you're the monogamous partner who is trying to survive a polybomb.
