One of Glamour’s Best Books of 2020

Popular podcast host and personal finance expert Lindsay Goldwert explores what professional dominatrixes can teach us about confidence, power, and happiness.

Imagine, for a moment, a world where the usual power dynamic is turned on its head. Where women not only stop apologizing, but seize - and enjoy - control. This is the quickly mainstreaming world of BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism, masochism) - and it has a lot to teach women about empowerment, negotiation, open-mindedness, and more. Journalist Lindsay Goldwert, intrigued by this seismic cultural shift, traveled across the United States to meet the stars of the subculture, who spoke frankly with her about their lives and work.

In “lively, funny, thoughtful channeling of wisdom” (Sara Benincasa, author of Real Artists Have Day Jobs), these Alpha women show you how you can reset the power dynamic in any situation to get what you want - whether it’s from a husband, a boss, or partner. They share strategies for revolutionizing not only your sex life, but your career, your relationships, and most importantly, your inner foundations.

With bondage gear popping up on the big screen, the runway, the red carpet, and in celebrity lingerie lines, BDSM is officially moving out of the dungeon and into the sun. Let Bow Down help you learn how to use it.

“Whether your fantasies lie in the bedroom or the boardroom, Lindsay will give you the courage to go forth and dominate.” (Sarah Cooper, author of How to Be Successful Without Hurting Men’s Feelings).

Not a book on the BDSM lifestyle

I thought this book would impart a perspective on the femdom aspects of BDSM , from the point of view of the female don and from the point of the male and/or female sub. Instead, this was a brief discussion of femdom play with male submissive, and focused primarily on the bashing of men. The book was very political constantly pointing out how women in our society are mistreated by men. This political anger , whether or not accepts it as valid, has nothing to do with femdom relationships The femdom is not acting out anger towards men by dominating them in bdsm scenes, no more than a male don/ female relationship is about the man acting out his anger towards women. That would be abuse, not bdsm. In a similar manner, the femdom is not about revenge towards men ...that expression of anger as a dominant female is abuse. The Author is falsely using the femdom/ submissive scene or relationship as a means to promote her agenda of degrading and minimizing maleness. She is obviously very bitter and anti male ! A very misleading and potentially damaging book for both the practice of mainstream bdsm as well as those that participate in it .

AMAZING INSPIRATIONAL BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED BOOK

I loved the humor, honesty, strength, spirit, heart and intention of this book!! The narrator was perfect!! I am buying copies for a three of my girls, because I want them to see themselves stronger and more worthy than I have seen myself. The author really touched upon perspectives that are so true for me, and I truly appreciate her courage to write this book. I will listen to it on Audible again and again!! In fact, I am cuing it up again, as soon as I finish this review! I cannot recommend this book enough... Now, I have to put some of the lessons into action for myself... starting with creating a “Code of Ethics and Conduct’ for myself, and those in my life... Enjoy!!

Chapter 12 Alone is Worth Owning This Book

The writing is concise and informative; the overall story is engaging and the ideas are not necessarily groundbreaking, but they are eye opening in the simplicity with which Lindsay and her sources have presented them. Buy this book if you have ever said “I’m sorry” for no damn good reason, or if you have ever settled for less than you wanted because you were afraid to upset someone by asking for more.

I wish I can have my credit back

It just common sense such as get consent, speak with confidence, we all have different bodies, you perfect the way you are. I expected deeper understanding of desire and ask. very basic and conventional.

Ok

Parts of the book include very interesting ideas and for sure it gives you a good glimpse into BDSM, but that's all. It will make you view female empowerment from different angles and this is also very interesting, But, I do not thing that the book gives any Lessons from Dominatrixes on How to Get Everything You Want. This is what disappointed me.

Enjoyable read with some great tips

Overall an fun, well written and thought-provoking read. Goldwert has learned much from her research and life experience, and her willingness to share these lessons is both intimate and light-hearted, like catching up with a good friend. Flanagan’s narration is appropriate and enjoyable, while retaining due reverence to the text she reads.

Some chapters towards the end focus more on intimate partnerships than I presumed; but this is more my personal expectations than anything else. Like any self-help book, some advice is more useful - or personally relevant maybe - than others. It is overall a good read; Bow Down is both a thoughtful advisor on reclaiming our boundaries, and a kind, sometimes humorous peak behind the curtain of our most secret desires. This book demands respect and isn’t afraid to ask for it.
