Time slips. Doomsday scenarios. Killer butterflies. C. J. Tudor's novels are widely acclaimed for their dark, twisty suspense plots, but with A Sliver of Darkness, she pulls us even further into her dizzying imagination. Riveting, macabre, and explosively original, A Sliver of Darkness is C. J. Tudor at her most wicked and uninhibited.

Publisher's summary
“The Hiding Place is terrific in every way.” (Lee Child)
From the acclaimed author of The Chalk Man comes an unputdownable psychological thriller about a man who returns home to settle old scores - and uncovers a secret darker than he could have imagined.
Joe never wanted to come back to Arnhill. After the way things ended with his old gang - the betrayal, the suicide - and what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. But Joe doesn’t have a choice, not after a chilling email surfaces in his inbox: I know what happened to your sister. It’s happening again....
Lying his way into a teaching job at his former high school is the easy part. Facing off with onetime friends who aren’t too happy to have him back in town - while avoiding the enemies he’s made in the years since - is tougher. But the hardest part of all will be returning to the abandoned mine where his life changed forever, and finally confronting the horrifying truth about Arnhill, his sister, and himself. Because for Joe, the worst moment of his life wasn’t the day his sister went missing. It was the day she came back.
Critic reviews
“Tudor maintains a tone of creeping dread throughout the book, of something lingering always in the background, coyly hiding its face while whispering promises of very bad things to come. In the last quarter, however, she goes for broke with outright horror, giving readers an effective jolt of adrenaline that will carry them all the way to the terrifying conclusion. Readers won’t know what hit them. Tudor came out swinging with The Chalk Man, but this one puts her firmly on the map. Not to be missed.” (Kirkus)
“Tudor has crafted another fantastic horror-tinged thriller (after The Chalk Man, 2018) in the vein of John Connolly and Brendan Duffy." (Booklist)
"Some writers have it, and some don't. CJ Tudor has it big time - The Hiding Place is terrific in every way." (Lee Child)

There she is told to observe and assess Alex Connolly, a keenly intelligent, sensitive ten-year-old coping with his mother's latest suicide attempt. Alex is in need of serious counseling: He has been harming himself and others, often during blackouts. At the root of his destructive behavior, Alex claims, is his imaginary "friend" Ruen, a cunning demon who urges Alex to bend to his often violent will.

It was Ok
The last portion of the book left unanswered questions. There were two story lines then all of a sudden there were more. It reminds me of movies where nothing happens for the first 1 hrs and a half and then the last 30 min is filled with explosion and twist. Everything has to get wrapped up quickly. It just feels empty. I wouldn't recommend. The speaker was awesome tho.

Great read
I really enjoyed this book, like her other books she mixes in a little horror in with her mystery and really weave a fascinating story.

Really enjoyed this book!
The narrator was very good. Just right for this story, which was interesting, shocking, terrifying, supernatural at times, but also believable. Am glad I found it, when looking at books in the mystery/thriller category. Can recommend.

Suspenseful, yet enjoyable read.
I enjoyed the listen. The narration was fantastic and the writing was superb. The story keeps your interest the entire time.

Book #2, Shades of Stephen King #2
What saved the story for me is the author's command of language. Settings, mannerisms, personalities, and behavior were painted very, very well in a way that pulled me into the story. That's what saved the story and is what will keep me buying C.J. Tudor books. My big disappointment is, like her first book, she models it after a Stephen King story - Pet Sematary. Only, this time it is even more obvious and annoying. Even though I enjoyed her use of language, my inner voice screamed "I've heard this before." And speaking of voices, Richard Armitage is a fantastic narrator. His narration with Tudor's language, for me, made me not regret purchasing the book.

Richard Armitage is phenomenal!
I love his voice and the way he portays different characters. This is my first CJ Tudor book, but it definitely won't be my last. Excellent storyline and imagery.

Good read!
The book kept me guessing. It was a little reminisce of Stephen King's Pet Cemetery.

seem familiar?
Although, I enjoyed the story line and the surprises, it was a copy of the theme of Pet Semetary. I was disappointed that they were so similar.
