Among the greats of 20th-century horror and fantasy, few names stand above Richard Matheson. Though known by many for novels like I Am Legend and his 16 Twilight Zone episodes, Matheson truly shines in his chilling, masterful short stories. Since his first story appeared in 1950, virtually every major writer of science fiction and fantasy has fallen under his influence, including Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, Peter Straub, and Joe Hill, as well as filmmakers like Stephen Spielberg and J. Slow burn stories
I find the best thing about anthologies is discovering new writers to explore, as well as listening to great short stories from already favorite authors of mine. (Ditto for the narrators.)
Haunted Nights comes through in spades in that regard, but don't go into it anticipating what kind of horror stories are inside. The title alludes to ghost stories, but you can be haunted by more things than ghosts. The intro gives you an education about observations on and around October 31st from several countries as well as the foundation of Halloween practices in the United States for the anthology's set up. The first story is a solid ghost story, making you think that's the theme the anthology will be following, but the second story, a powerhouse of disquieting creepiness that builds in tension and fear and horror as it progressed, is still well within the haunted interpretation too.
Many of the stories are cerebral with a slow burn build up, so have patience. Most of the narrators are fabulous, giving terrific nuanced performances. On the whole Haunted Nights is a vivid listening experience. I could quibble there was one story where I couldn't stand both the writing & the narration. But! 1 out of 16? That's pretty good entertainment value, if you ask me.
And even though all the info is available on Audible's intro page, for ease of searching out authors & narrators to explore after listening, here's a table of contents with everything matched up:
CH1 Introduction - Narrated by Gabra Zackman
CH2 With Graveyard Weeds and Wolfbane Seeds by Seanan McGuire - Narrated by Erin Spencer
CH3 Dirtmouth by Stephen Graham Jones - Narrated by James Patrick Cronin
CH4 A Small Taste of the Old Country by Jonathan Maberry - Narrated by Michael Kramer

CH8 Witch-Hazel by Jeffrey Ford - Narrated by Carrington MacDuffie

Haunted Nights
Overall the book was entertaining. The performances were done very well. Audible does a great job picking voice actors for these scary stories. There was a good variety of stories. The only reason I give the stories 3 stars was because there were a few stories I would end up tuning out. I would be driving for 40 minutes and not remember what happened because the story wasn’t engaging enough.

pretty good stories
Narrators were good and all but one story kept my attention (I admit I ended up skipping that story after about 3 minutes), the next to last story kinda droned on but was still not bad, and a couple were wonderfully spine tingling creepy. All in all well worth the credit.

Halloween, 1963. They call him the October Boy, or Ol' Hacksaw Face, or Sawtooth Jack. Whatever the name, everybody in this small Midwestern town knows who he is. How he rises from the cornfields every Halloween, a butcher knife in his hand, and makes his way toward town, where gangs of teenage boys eagerly await their chance to confront the legendary nightmare. Both the hunter and the hunted, the October Boy is the prize in an annual rite of life and death. Pete McCormick knows that killing the October Boy is his one chance to escape a dead-end future in this one-horse town.

The living dead are more alive than ever! Zombies have become more than an iconic monster for the 21st century: They are now a phenomenon constantly revealing as much about ourselves - and our fascination with death, resurrection, and survival - as our love for the supernatural or post-apocalyptic speculation. Our most imaginative literary minds have been devoured by these incredible creatures and produced exciting, insightful, and unflinching new works of zombie fiction.

Mad scientists have never had it so tough. In super-hero comics, graphic novels, films, TV series, video games, and even works of what may be fiction, they are besieged by those who stand against them, devoid of sympathy for their irrational, megalomaniacal impulses to rule, destroy, or otherwise dominate the world as we know it. It’s just not fair. So those of us who are so twisted and sick that we love mad scientists have created this guide.

In their tumbledown "Stitchery", not far from the stomping grounds of the legendary Headless Horseman, the Van Ripper sisters - Aubrey, Bitty, and Meggie - are said to knit people's most ardent wishes into beautiful scarves and mittens, granting them health, success, or even a blossoming romance. But for the magic to work, sacrifices must be made - and no one knows that better than the Van Rippers.

Hot on the heels of Gardner Dozois's acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf... and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda... and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore... and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped - or misshaped - by the potent magic they seek to wield.
