Publisher's Summary

Hobbes: Unhuman Series, Books I-IV

I - Inspector Hobbes and the Blood Inspector Hobbes, a monstrous police detective, investigates grave, ghoulish goings-on. A mad pseudo vampire with the dagger of Vlad Tepes is behind robbery, and murder. It is a funny tale with a troll, human sacrifice, blood and great cooking. 'I ought to tell you, dear, he can get rather wild when he's hungry.'

II - Inspector Hobbes and the Curse Andy becomes infatuated with a dangerously beautiful woman during Hobbes's investigations into sheep deaths and the mysterious disappearance of pheasants, which are apparently connected to a rash of big cat sightings; and something horrible seems to be lurking in the woods. 'Love may be on the horizon but, beware; something wicked this way comes.'

III - Inspector Hobbes and the Gold Diggers Unwelcome attention after foiling an armed robbery forces the Inspector away on holiday to the dangerous Blacker Mountains, where his accident-prone friend, Andy, stumbles across something shocking, before falling for an attractive widow. ‘I always knew you’d get ahead one day.’

IV - Inspector Hobbes and the Bones Trouble lies ahead for Andy. Is the apparently charming young woman who attempts to seduce him merely setting him up for blackmail, or is something even more sinister afoot? Hobbes certainly believes so, and, though he's not the sort to worry, he is getting worried. ‘I was grateful for having been born human.’

Best Value on Audible

Narration is so PERFECT and the stories vastly entertaining. Individually, I might have wavered between a 4 and a 5, but 40 amazing hours of entertainment for one credit - hands down, Five Stars! After so long with these characters, I'd normally be ready for a break, but all I feel is an abiding sadness that there is no more. Quirky, likable characters, funny and somewhat snarky dialog, and clever, interesting plots - yep, this is a world I could just stay in. If you enjoy urban fantasy, you could think of this as English rural fantasy and when you add the humor, the brilliance of a character like Hobbs, and some great dog action, it's hard to beat! There is plenty of tension in the narrative, but nothing you couldn't enjoy with the whole family and I loved that. After reading this, I think I am in love with Wilkie Martin and major kudos to Tim Campbell's bringing the stories to beautiful life.

2 thumbs up

Inspector Hobes and the Blood -While it took me a little while to get used to the humor it was worth it. It turned out to be a darned funny and quirky story. Warning, do not read while hungry because there is a lot of talk about food. Inspector Hobbes and the Curse-Most of the plot lines went to an easily predictable place. That said, it really doesn't matter because those plot lines involve the hilarious duo, Hobbes and Andy. Inspector Hobbes and the Gold Diggers-This is a fun series.

Sad for it to end!

I thoroughly enjoyed Books 1-IV. Unusual story line that had me laughing out loud. Great narration, fun characters, and a nice listen. I’m sad I came to the end.

Sherlock Holmes Meets Hitchhiker's Guide

A truly marvelous tale with poignantly dry wit, brutally satisfying action, and *real* personality. I honestly can't sing high enough praises, I fell in love with every part of this collection. The story arcs are well-crafted, dialogue never feels boring, and the characters have--well, character! In addition, Tim Campbell delivers a masterful performance. Americans love a British accent, of course, but Campbell's skill is exemplary in remaining unpretentious and relatable. Enjoy with a nice pint of lager.

Excellent series!

First let me say that I really loved this series. That being said, I can’t stand Andy. He’s an inept buffoon with such stagnant character growth that it’s like someone wrote a story about Ron Weasley as a muggle surrounded buy incredibly interesting and creative characters. That sounds bad since he’s the narrator and main character, BUT the people he surrounds himself with make this a great series. Even though he’s the narrator and main character, he’s telling the story of these other awesome folk, he just happens to also be there...

was boring

I tried to get through it...I really did. but the way it was narrated made the book really boring to listen too. it doesn't help the main character is a grown ass man that is just....so useless and cowardly...I hate that in people so listening to him talk about his life and failures just danm near put me to sleep. I mean he tries, but at his age their some things you should know how to do, like cook...and drive. so good luck...you are gonna need it to read this book.

Creative, Funny, and Full of Charm

I love this series! It’s a cozy mystery with elements of fantasy and comedic horror. Hobbes is warm and wise. There are lots of puns. Definitely worth listening to again and again.

Terrible narrator

I have quit this book with 30 hours and 56 minutes left. I am just sick to my back teeth of the awful way the narrator pronounces his words. He is totally incapable of pronouncing anything with 'or' in it. Awful is pronounced offal, thought is thot, hairy is harry, walk is wok, hall is hol, caught is cot, ought is ot etc etc. It seriously goes on and on until it becomes an unfunny joke and you just ignore the story and wait for the next mispronounced word. Terrible. As for the story, I think I did laugh once, but in all honesty, it was no more than that, the story was full of holes and Andy was just too stupid and cowardly to be of interest. Seriously, give it a miss.

Entertaining, witty and funny

Fun stories, superbly narrated. Although the „criminal cases“ of inspector Hobbes are not the most thrilling crime stories ever, the characters are just wonderful to hang out with! I definitely hope there’ll be another one.

Tongue in cheek.

A light hearted and amusing collection of alternative crime stories. I found myself smiling at the puns despite expecting them. A good listen.

Not for me

I only like writing positive pieces. So this will be short.
The side characters are more interesting than the main pairing. Hobbes is fine, shame a deep dive into his history isn’t more forthcoming.
Andy though is hard to take. Hero or anti hero? I’ve obviously missed the point because either way it’s almost impossible to feel empathy for the character and as he is the narrator of the tales he is a constant frustration. He offers little with his selfish outlook on life, a self serving moaner and a taker. Indescribably irritating.
Add the narrations self styled mispronunciation of every third vowel literally drove me to shouting at my poor phone.
I like to finish what I start but I really wish I hadn’t with this. So many hours wasted trying to let the book win me over. Nothing wrong with the writers tale as such and funny every now and again. But Andy makes this a production that I will never relisten too again. I enjoy replaying most books over and over. Delete.

Quite funny

Nice to listen and quite entertaining. Good if you're in the mood for something easy to listen when doing chores or driving. You need to know English people a bit to catch all jokes, but if you're not familiar with them it's not a big problem.

Awful Narrator

The story is great fun, with excellent characters, unfortunately it is spoiled by the narrators awful English pronunciation.
Surely they could have found an English speaker to narrate a book set in England and populated with English characters.

I just couldn’t take any more

I got to chapter 12 but just couldn’t take any more of the narrator’s weird and increasingly annoying pronunciation of certain words - it really detracted from the story - just as you became immersed in the story he’d say something odd like thot instead of thought and it ruined the thought process (no pun intended). I rather liked the story’s premise but just can’t listen any more.

Hilarious, gentle mystery series

A rare find for me. A series of books (four titles released as one audiobook) both funny and intriguing. Blending a similar humour to the Discworld series with the quirkiness of the Rivers of London books. Whilst being adult fiction, there is nothing unsuitable for younger listeners. An excellent selection for a family road trip.
Narration is excellent, a range of voices and accents performed well. Speed of reading is spot on.
Very enjoyable.

Couldn’t get into it

I wanted to like this series of books, but I’m struggling to finish even the first volume. Comparing them to Pratchett is doing a disservice to Sir Terry’s genuine wit and humour. I think the most difficult thing to get over is that I can feel no sympathy for Andy, the lead character. He is cowardly, shallow, lazy and unintelligent. It’s hard to care what happens to him. Hobbes is a bit more likeable, but the humour of the author seems clumsy and forced. The storyline is just okay. The narrator does his best, but even he couldn’t get me very interested.
