Loved It!

I've bought and read so many awful "thrillers" lately that I'm afraid of wasting money on any more. Liar, however, was completely entertaining all the way through. I thought I knew where it was all headed, but was pleasantly surprised that I hadn't figured it out after all. I found the ending to be unpredictable and I loved it!

This wasn't so much a taut, keep you up at night thriller, as a slowly building suspense novel that makes you think you know everything, only to find out there's more to the story. Like most books in this genre, there are always things that are a bit unbelievable, but this was absolutely one of the best books I've listened to in quite awhile. Lucy Price-Lewis narrated it superbly.

A compelling and twisted psychological thriller!

British author K.L.Slater uses the interesting device of stating the book with the last few sentences of Liar, identified as such, as the opening sentences of the novel.

I hardly know what to say about Liar. It certainly is compelling. Guessing the outcome even with the author's words at the beginning is impossible. Ultimately it is about determination to get ones way even if means destroying oneself in doing so. It is a wonderful novel even as it is incredibly, frighteningly dark. Narration by Lucy Price-Lewis could not be better.

Liar may be the best psychological thriller I have ever read and it is easily deserves a 5 star rating. This author has great talent. I VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND Liar.

Now this is a psychological suspense mystery! I listened to it straight through. The reader does a very good job. This is British, which I love, intelligent, secretive, not a police officer anywhere.

A very dark story.

I did not have good feelings during or after this story. The plot was good. The reading was good but the dark, psychological twists leave a bad taste.

Intense and Twisted!

Great psychological thriller that kept me guessing. Never expected the ending to take such a turn. Scary to think we can be fooled by those who are closest to us. What a big surprise that was! Although this is not a lengthy novel, the time spent listening really flew by. As for Lucy Price-Lewis performance of each of the characters, she definitely managed to bring all of them to life. It was easy to figure out which one was speaking at any given time. I will now check out other books from the author. 😊👍🏼

Manipulative train wreck

The prologue sets the scene for the final showdown between two women that we know hate each other enough to kill. Who these two are and how they got to this point is where the story has to go. Unfortunately, author Slater seems to have difficulty distinguishing tension from tedium. Having the POV switch between the adversaries in peel-back-the-onion style keeps the cards held tightly to each ones’ chest, but soon becomes repetitive, especially when it comes to the mom Judi (although Amber gets kind of tiresome too). If this had been shortened to a novella with tighter plotting, maaayybe it would have been more palatable. But the longer the secrets are just teased at, the less tension was sustained – just get on with it please.

Judi and Amber, however unlikable, are the only characters with any dimension. Son Ben was a wuss and husband Henry was a jerk, both paper thin. Story threads meant to add some unexpected interest just muddied the picture and never got resolved. In fact, even after we reach the end and find out who stands and who falls, there’s no real resolution. Scene fades, credits roll and it’s impossible to see how either of these miserable women could “win” because there’s no plausible way to get away with it. There's no attempt at explaining how the killer tries to solidify her victory. I ended feeling I had been manipulated into staring at a train wreck just to see it pull the brake at the last minute and stall on the tracks.

Twisted ending

Struggled to stick with this book. The beginning was a drag, honestly. Judy's inner monologue jabbers on entirely too long. The sense that this woman is disturbed is very easily comprehended. Which is the point. Happy that I made it to the end. For me the twist was good but I wouldn't recommend it nor read again.

Chose on a Lark, it was a Good Lark!

A low-key thriller that will keep you with those earbuds glued in!

Narration is spot -on, her voice is able to portray each character's quirks very well. The book is low -key yet still fast paced, if that makes any sense!

The ending will leave you with a "What?" , but in a good way.

The book is simple, exciting, twisty and not what you are expecting.

Really enjoyed this.

Superb narration and tense plot

Now don't get me wrong I loved this book as it does everything it says on the tin but, for me the ending/beginning was plainly obvious. A tale of secrets, deception, motherhood, madness and tenderness all served up with a dash of revenge. Its a fast paced, twisty turny novel that does keep you on the edge of your seat or in my case a cup of hot chocolate frozen between table and mouth.

All the clues to the ending are set out as the characters are given meat to their bones and the author can certainly hold your attention with her descriptive narrative.

Worth a credit.

Predictable, awful book

Nearly gave up a few times but persevered
The lead character does nothing but moan all the way through and the narrators voice is grating
Weak characterisation, teamed with a weak story line
Even the side story was pointless
Don’t waste your credits on this poor excuse for literacy

Liar

The problem with certain thrillers is that the plots are far too contrived and formulaic and this is what has happened here. The main character, Judi Jukes, from whom at least 80% of the story's POV is taken from, is an unlikable and overbearing wife, mother and grandmother. Therefore the persona of Amber Carr (a name, which quite frankly reminded me of a suburban mini cab firm) doesn't juxtapose nearly well enough. As for Henry, Ben and the boys ... they might has well been selected from central casting.

There are a few continuity errors too - a joint of roast pork morphs into beef and Judi's age compared to her eldest grandson is also awry. Also, she works in a GPs surgery, so wouldn't she be able to subdue her menopausal flushes a little more effectively.

The narrator, Lucy Price Lewis, was measured throughout, albeit with more of a Yorkshire twang as opposed to a Nottinghamshire lilt.

predictable, boring & boring narration

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

don't bother, from the first moment this book is predictable and dull, even the voice of the narration is boring and badly chose.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Lucy Price-Lewis?

almost anyone

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

boredom dissapoinment

Boring and irritating

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

No - I nearly returned this twice as it was annoying me so much! The central characters in this book are dull and based on stereotypes - the over-protective mother in law, the stepmother, the desperate lonely guy etc.
I was expecting a thriller but this was really a domestic tale of woe with 2-D characters. It only became anything resembling a thriller in the last hour of the book.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was ok - it was the only vaguely interesting part. It didn't ring true for me but to be honest i was happy when it was finished so i could start listening to a proper thriller!

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Probably when the two rival characters confronted each other towards the end.

Did Liar inspire you to do anything?

Nope

Gripping!

I listened to this book over one day and was really engrossed! The storyline was impeccably crafted, the characters came to life for me and it was beautifully narrated. Sometimes the readers' voices on Audible books don't somehow match the characters and irritate me, but in this instance it all worked perfectly. The book's ending had me guessing and - if I have one small grouse - should have stretched out a bit more so that we could find out what happened to the perpetrator! I guess I wanted the book to go on a bit longer!

okay

The story had potential but it really didn't deliver. I persevered to the end of the book but found it very average. the twists and turns seemed very contrived with not enough effort going into the deliverance of them.

Don’t bother..

I did get drawn in in the beginning which was a mistake because I held on - painfully - to the end.. and what a let down... Judy is so bloody annoying, I kept waiting for more to happen in the book but it was just her whining about everything..

Overall it was a good story with enough twists & turns to be a fun read.

Both chilling and sinister

I love how the author writes about family dynamics whilst weaving a chilling tale just beneath the surface.
I found the narrators usual perfect style a little off with the older characters adding far more age to their voices than necessary.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed the ins and outs of the various relationships.
