Story
Kat Grant and Alice Campbell have a friendship forged in shared confidences and long lunches lubricated by expensive wine. Though they're very different women - the artsy socialite and the struggling suburbanite - they're each other's rocks. But even rocks crumble under pressure. Like when Kat's financier husband, Howard, plunges to his death from the second-floor balcony of their South Florida mansion. Howard was a jerk, a drunk, a bully, and, police say, a murder victim. The questions begin piling up.

Story
When Angela met Jason Powell while catering a dinner party in East Hampton, she assumed their romance would be a short-lived fling, like so many relationships between locals and summer visitors. To her surprise, Jason, a brilliant economics professor at NYU, had other plans, and they married the following summer. For Angela, the marriage turned out to be a chance to reboot her life. She and her son were finally able to move out of her mother's home to Manhattan, where no one knew about her tragic past.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can't move. She can't speak. She can't open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn't remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Publisher's Summary
A chilling domestic thriller, The Girlfriend brilliantly renders the relationships between a fiercely protective mother, a charming son, and the young woman who will stop at nothing to come between them.
Laura Cavendish can't wait to meet the woman who's won her son's affection. Despite a successful career in television and a long, prosperous marriage, Laura's world revolves around kind, talented Daniel. She pictures his new girlfriend, Cherry, becoming a close friend and confidante ...one day, even a daughter-in-law. But although Cherry is beautiful and amiable, Laura can't warm to her. There's something about the possessive way she touches Daniel, the little lies Laura detects. Cherry seems to resent Laura, driving a wedge between mother and son - until one day Daniel is injured in a terrible accident.
Six months later, with Daniel still in a coma and facing death, Laura makes a fateful decision - and carries out an astonishing deceit. A handsome doctor for a husband, with a trust fund and a family villa in Saint-Tropez - it was all supposed to be Cherry's. Now, instead of living with Daniel in his impeccable home, she's jobless and broke. And then Cherry discovers Laura's stunning deception. But Cherry is too clever, too ambitious to let her get away with it. She has already transformed herself into Daniel's dream woman. Now she'll become Laura's worst nightmare.
Author Michelle Frances masterfully weaves both women's perspectives into this gripping, artfully plotted psychological thriller, propelling the listener through one dark twist after another toward a shocking, unforgettable finale.

horrible narration
i think the story might be good but I can't get past the narrator. She sounds like she's reading a stock market report. The most sonorous boring flat uninflected narration I have ever heard. I can't even go on with the story.

Solid Domestic Thriller
My preferred genres teeter from thriller to sci-fi/horror. Thrillers are fun, but I’m usually not blown away by them. Hence, to be fair, I’m rating this book based on its genre. This is a solid good read! I can usually guess the plot and what the characters will do next, however, this one kept me guessing. Kudos to Michelle Frances. This one is a home run!
The writer could make me despise a character one moment and empathize with her the next. It was a rollercoaster and kept me on the edge of my seat and listening every chance I got. If you love thrillers, get this!

Keep listening, it's worth it..
I started listening to 'The Girlfriend' with high expectations. I downloaded it as soon as it was available and dove in. At first, I had a very hard time staying focused. The narrator goes WAY too fast even at the speed of 1 and things seem very jumbled and I couldn't figure out who was who and what the plot was. I almost gave up, but I decided to give it one more listen.
The strange relationship between moms and their son's girlfriends is one I am familiar with. In 'The Girlfriend' it's safe to say that Mom disliked her son girlfriend, immensely. After a terrible accident when doctors told his parents that Daniel (the son) would die in as soon as 24 hours, mom does what any mom would do and stays by Daniel's side and holds him thinking each breath is his last. She also sort of told Cherry he'd already died so she didn't have to deal with her in Daniel's final moments. But then, Daniel didn't die. And, Cherry wasn't one to take to the lie kindly.
This story had be engrossed and on pins and needles. It took me awhile to get used to the narrator, but all was well when I did. I would critique the ending and say it was a bit too neat, but I did love some of the characters and I am glad I read the book.

This story was just ok...and the narration was just ok.
I am a big fan of psychological thrillers with British narrators especially, but neither were exceptional .

Good story
this was, as promised, a good drama.
only leaving a review as note to the publisher:
there are at least 2 spots where the audio is not accurate.
1 spot where the narrator says the same line twice in a row... another spot where you can tell that the line was added in after the fact and narrated by a different person.
