Publisher's summary

Imagine how different your life would be if you could effortlessly persuade the people around you to get the most out of every situation.

You will never quite know how many opportunities you have missed by lacking the persuasive powers to truly get what you want out of life. Whether it's attaining more influence at work, or simply getting the kids to do the dishes. All too often people are left wanting, as they aren't equipped with the right psychological tactics to get these things done.

Not anymore.

James Daugherty is an intelligence expert & former CIA Spy who specializes in all forms of human behavior. But there's one communication trait which is critical to winning - persuasion. A spy would be highly ineffective without it.

However, he never realized quite how much his ability to persuade others, whilst working in the field as an American spy, would help everyday people in civilian life.

Imagine if you could effectively massage conversations in your favor, without manipulation or deception, to effortlessly bring people round to your way of thinking.

In this insightful and functional audiobook, Daugherty gives listeners a firsthand look into the trials and tribulations he dealt with in the field as a CIA operative.

This no nonsense guide reveals how to:

  • Better understand Cialdini's Six "Weapons" of Influence
  • Interpreting the classic human psychological motivators
  • What Aristotle can teach you about persuasion
  • The different types of persuasion techniques explained
  • The right way to use the "reverse psychology" principle
  • Spy tactics for high-pressure/stakes situations
  • Conversational strategies and personality traits to win over even the toughest adversary
  • Importance of small talk, greetings, and goodbyes in persuasion
  • Dealing with insults/arguments like a professional

I expected more

Is this book meant to be fiction or nonfiction? There is some basic stuff in here but nothing a government agent trained in tactical communication shouldn’t know his first day in school?

What a bunch of textbook pablum! That’s 2-1/2 hours of my life I was “persuaded” into listening to a dud!

lots of facts, but a painful read

tough listen. some good details presented in very concise form, but overall very few examples. it seems better served as a summary reference. much of the material was a challenge to relate to

Waste of Money!

There is nothing useful in this book, he just keeps referring to his other books “so he won’t repeat it here” Just Google Persuasion and you’ll get a lot more

boring

Very difficult to follow the monotone presentation. Most of the audio is describing what the person did as a spy.

Dont waste your time

If you have any experience in life at all, this book will not add any further value. It is pretty close to worthless.

I need more information on specific techniques and skill building because this book felt like a teaser.

Scant Meat

This book had so much potential! But I’m so sorry to say, fails.

I have no doubt this guy is an incredible spy, but it doesn’t come through. I wish he would team up with someone who could pull out of him much, much more.

This book basically has 3 ingredients:

1. talking about his background as a spy – 40%
2. regurgitating well known and boring social experiments – 45% (e.g. “Milgram Experiment”)
3. relating stories of real-world persuasion stories and examples – 15%

I’ve probably exaggerated the percentages, but the point is, there is way too much of the first two and very little subject matter of real-world stories and examples – but that’s what’s valuable and that’s we want!

I realize that most of what he did was classified, but that doesn’t mean he can’t anonymize the stories in order to prove the points! I’m just warning you this book is very disappointing and will leave you with very little new insight or wisdom.

For example, the “conclusion” of the book is that persuasion is more difficult than you think, so be sure to re-read the book as many times as you need. I’m no English professor, but this didn’t seem to qualify as a conclusion.

Anyway, the book is entertaining, and hints at so much potential. I felt like I really like this guy, I hope he has another revision that brings more.

Written with heart, understanding and passion!

For me this book covers the subject deeper than most. Meeting people where they are at, but first you must know exactly WHERE THEY ARE AT before you can meet them there. He teaches you how to fully connect with understanding and deep compassion which enables others to want to listen to what you have to say. Then, how to speak so words and feelings are actually heard. I read this book twice and the 2nd time around had a huge impact on me!
