Publisher's summary

The ultimate handbook for the modern mother: a practical, and positive tool to help free women from the debilitating notion of being the "perfect mom", filled with funny and all too relatable true-life stories and realistic suggestions to stop the burnout cycle, and protect our kids from the damage burnout can cause.

Moms, do you feel tired? Overwhelmed? Have you continually put off the things you need to do for you? Do you feel like it's all worth it because your kids are happy? Are you "over" being a mother? If you answered yes to these questions, you're not alone. Parents today want to create the ideal childhood for their children. Women strive to be the picture-perfect Pinterest mother that looks amazing, hosts the best birthday parties in town, posts the most "liked" photos, and serves delicious, nutritious home-cooked meals in her neat, organized home after ferrying the kids to school and a host of extracurricular activities on time.

This drive, while noble, can also be destructive, causing stress and anxiety that leads to "mommy burnout". Psychologist and family counselor Dr. Sheryl Ziegler is well-versed in the stress that moms face, and the burden of guilt they carry because they often feel like they aren't doing enough for their kids' happiness. A mother of three herself, Dr. Z - as she's affectionately known by her many patients - recognizes and understands that modern moms are all too often plagued by exhaustion, failure, isolation, self-doubt, and a general lack of self-love, and their families are also feeling the effects, too.

Over the last 19 years working with families and children, Dr. Z has devised a prescriptive program for addressing "mommy burnout" - teaching moms that they can learn to re-energize themselves and still feel good about their families and their lives. In this warm and empathetic guide, she examines this modern epidemic among mothers who put their children's happiness above their own, and offers empowering, proven solutions for alleviating this condition, saving marriages and keeping kids happy in the process.

So good!

This was exactly what I needed to listen to. It helped me realize I am not alone and felt like I was getting advice from an in person therapist.

Great basic knowledge

This book provides a great set of basic knowledge about burnout for stay at home moms. As a practicing clinician and Psychology professor, I think that the book lacked inclusivity, diversity, complexity, and addressing burnout for parents that work multiple jobs with the parenting responsibilities. As a same sex couple, the speak about husbands was accurate but exclusive. it would have been more effective to share stories from multiple lenses and types of moms. I started the book because the author was a clinician and I assumed that I would hear more about her experience with balance, not just focused on stay at home moms. The neurological and physiological aspects of the book were well placed and educational for most! I would recommend for clients who were stay at home moms possibly but not clinicians. The audience is very specific here.

I have been looking for something like this my whole life

If you feel like motherhood has sucked everything out of you this book is for you. It let’s you know we as mothers are not alone. It is okay to feel this way. You get to see how several mothers have dealt with this. Why is this book not a best seller... I don’t know but it should be. It was so addicting I binge read it in one day

Must read for moms!

This book was an eye-opener. Although I knew I was in burnout already, this book helped me realize what I can do about it to start some real positive change. I highly recommend for any mom, even if you don’t feel like you are struggling now.

Simple Relatable Real

I recommend for all mommies! Although it's focused around mom's of older children & I have a toddler, I found it very helpful. It helped me identify some of my problem behaviors and aided me with lots of new methods to care for myself!

so close to home

I was hesitant to start this book but it truly did help even with the notion that this is a problem several women have and can relate to. good pointers, tips, and goals to set for myself.
