Publisher's summary

A dense black cloud boiled up in the southeastern sky. It rose high and fast, like a time-lapse movie of the birth of a thunderhead. But it was no rain cloud. Wholly black, it reached up and up until it loomed over her, blocking out the sun. Somehow, she knew, it was Death coming for her.

Pre-med student Coral is on vacation in Idaho when something terrible happens. The black cloud is followed by a wildfire and searing heat that lasts for days. She survives deep in a cave but emerges days later to find the world transformed, with blackened trees, an ash-filled sky, and no living creatures stirring - except for her.

So begins her desperate journey to find water and food and other survivors...and the answer to the mystery of what happened.

Note: This is a combined edition of Gray I, Gray II, and Gray III.

Rare find indeed!!

Many many stories have emanated from my iPhone this one stands out in my top five. First thing missing from this telling is the dreaded "he said she said "the narrator is a gifted performer and did an outstanding job. The story is strong. Bleak but rewarding I simply could not put it down (cliché I know). When I find myself listening to a story outside my normal Places that is a sign that I am really digging the story Nuff said. Get this book and enjoy !

Great Read!

Loved it! slow start but if you stick with it you find its an Interesting fictional story based in a rarely used apoocolyptic scenario. Scientifically right on! I identified strongly with the main character, coral, as I am in the medical field myself. As a paramedic and fomer combat medic I could see having to function far above my level of training some of it at least I have more training than the main character did. It's also an interesting scenario and that most other apocalyptic based books don't take into account survival in a resource sparse world, due to the ash blocking out the sun. Even those that end in the zombie apocalypse, aliens, or due to a virus or some almost all of the of the other scenarios doesn't destroy almost all potential food, medicine, shelter or building/fuel sources (ie wood) nor does it plunge the world into a sub Arctic tundra. It's hard to imagine attempting to survive in an environment with little or no remaining wood to burn for heat or building supplies, and having almost all water and food sources frozen solid or burned to a crisp. This story is an amazing presentation of a reality that is entirely possible.

I, couldn't put it down, likeable characters.

Coral and her companion, in a barren landscape of a destroyed earth, after almost starving to death, find an entire train car, filled with soup, years worth of food for the two of them.
After acknowledging that others may find this lifesaving stash of food and steal it, they opt to camp nearby so they can guard it, instead of stashing food in multiple caches, in order to to not lose it all.
I am literally screaming at my car stereo as I am listening to this book.

The book that makes Zombies look not so bad

I thought apocalypse with Zombies would be bad, but I was wrong. This was much worse. Not that Zombies are good either...but wow, what a thought provoking book. I was kinda hoping for a different ending where the story dealt with the last place they went, like what was the outcome? I guess all the unanswered outcomes leaves room for more books. It was a very good book, narrated very well.

PAGE? Turner!

It really was a good thing I was listening on Audible! Over the past week or so, I wouldn't have been able to get anything done otherwise!

The book is very well written with enough twists and turns and the subject was very intriguing. I found myself in a movie in my head!

Long the way I like them.

This was s different spin on end of world type book. I found it sucking me in at every turn. Thus book reminded me a bit of the Unnamed Midwife. I loved that book as well. Can't wait for the next book. I hope there is another.

ignore any naysayers, this book was fantastic!

This was totally engrossing to me, I had a hard time turning it off at night! I'd set my sleep timer then have to reset it! No spoilers in my review. I will say that the story takes place in Idaho, where I do happen to live so that certainly added interest, but the story was gripping, characters well developed, I was rooting for them the whole time! The narrator did a seamless job , had a pleasant voice, and portrayed characters very well. i will actually look for her work now like I do with Kate Reading, RC Bray, and Will Wheaton, several of my favorite narrators.
