Publisher's summary

Krysta is used to getting the drop on vampires. Her "special abilities" aren't much, but the plan is simple - she plays helpless pretty young thing to lure them in. Then her shoto swords come out and it's bye-bye, bloodsucker. Until one night she finds herself with an unexpected ally. He's a vampire, all right, but different. Mysterious. Handsome. And more interested in saving her skin than draining it. Etienne has been an Immortal Guardian for two hundred years-long enough to know that Krysta is special. He can't stop thinking about her long legs, even more than her short swords. Then he discovers the vamps she's exterminating have friends in high places, and the Guardians are in danger, too. He'll have to accept Krysta's help to save them. The stakes for a mortal are high. But the cost to his heart might be higher . . .

AWESOME...... SIMPLY AWESOME

Dianne Duvall's a Maestro at creating a fascinating paranormal world, then floods it with interesting characters, breathes life and personalities into each of them for us to savour and drool over and finally gives us an incredible, action-packed, funny, intense, adventure with twists, humor, intrigue, sizzling sex scenes and, of course, an intense romance.

Book by book she seamlessly orchestrates love matches, battles, villains, good, evil and questionable characters, shocks and surprises whilst all the time building and building towards the inevitable final battle. Krystal and Etienne's story was a non-stop entertaining and enjoyable listen and only added to the intrigue and mysteries that is the Immortal Guardian's world.

Worth a credit? There's WOWS, POWS, PHEWS and WHO KNEWS so I think I've said enough to let you know that my answer will not only be a YES, but a HELL YES written on 100 shiny Helium balloons all leisurely floating skywards. A good runner-up to J R Ward's BDB.

They're back!!!!!

I love love love this series! This is book 4 and I hope there are 100 more! I never thought I would love a series more than the black dagger brotherhood but I do!

Once again we are in the world of the immortal guardians....this is a wonderful world that is full of humor, full of steamy scenes, and just plain fun to be in. In this world, set in present day, there is a virus that causes vampirism. Once someone is infected things can go one of two ways, become a blood thirsty vampire who looses their mind within a year and becomes a savage without a conscience OR if you have the special DNA you are turned into a fanged, glowing eyes, rational vampire...known as an immortal guardian. The IG's have a network of humans that help them and they protect man kind from the vicious deadly vampires.

I laughed so hard I cried! The writing is wonderful and each character has their own special personality that springs to life. If you haven't started this series you need to, just buy the first one....or use a credit....I swear you won't be disappointed!

Mostly great

The only real problem I have with this series up to this point is: I am continually being told how Seth is a supremely wise nearly omniscient leader, but he constantly behaves like a petulant manchild lashing out at the slightest provocation and threatening immediate death to his subordinates. I don't know how any of the characters ever got the impression to respect him as leader other than for just being super powerful.

I have several minor quibbles with terminology errors, like the rampant abuse of the word shoto. I mostly forgive those but they do irritate me a bit

Other than that, this series is quite good. It gets pretty wacky and over the top. aliens, angels, vampires oh my. Just waiting for wizards and dragons at this point. but Seriously the story elements are woven together fairly well and the bizarre stuff that shows up keeps it feeling fairly fresh.

Also the sex scenes are probably the least interesting thing about the series, if that's what you are looking for. They are super vanilla hetero-normative and fairly repetitive, but the romances themselves are pretty good. The characters are pretty diverse and interesting which can definitely be hard to do with a long running multi cast serial like this.

Another great addition to the series! :D

4.5-5 stars

This was another great addition to this series. Krysta and Etienne are perfect for each other and I love them both. The storyline is interesting and engaging (as usual) and my only issue with this book is it ending and having to wait for the next book to come out to see what happens next! *sigh*

Krysta is pretty kickbutt. She's a Vampire hunter (with the help of her brother as backup) and has been doing it for 6 years. She's never met a sane vampire before but one night when she encounters more Vampires than she can handle on her own, she ends up getting help from what appears to be a good Vampire. She's unwilling to trust him at first and flees as soon as she can. She doesn't realize that she didn't get away.

Etienne is French and a 200+ years old Immortal (a Vampire-like paranormal that is sane and hunts Vampires to protect humanity). Etienne is out hunting Vampires one night when he sees a woman (Krysta) being tailed by Vampires. He's surprised when the woman turns around and starts fighting and killing them. He helps when she gets in trouble but isn't sure who she is or her intentions, and for some reason his telepathy doesn't work on Krysta. Fearing she might be an enemy, Etienne follows her home and spies on her to find out who she is.

Etienne spends some time figuring out who Krysta and her brother are. He starts shadowing her while she hunts and tries to keep her safe while keeping it from her. When she finally figures it out, they end up in a confrontation and she realizes again that Etienne isn't a regular Vampire. At one point, Krysta and Etienne end up getting attacked by mercenaries and Etienne is drugged and almost captured. Krysta ends up helping him out and, consequently is seen by the mercenaries as a target. When the mercenaries destroy her home, her and her brother decide to stay with Etienne until things are settled.

Krysta is able to keep hunting with Etienne and they get to know each other and start to get close but still don't give in completely to their feelings for each other. When they finally do, they both fear it's too soon but don't want to fight their feelings any more. It was actually kind of cool seeing Etienne trying to figure out Krysta and how she feels about him without his telepathy working on her....poor guy. Krysta and Etienne really do end up being pretty perfect for each other though and I was very happy to see them get together. Meanwhile, the action plot heats up as they're able to track the base of the newest threat. Unfortunately, they don't know the true enemy behind unleashing the most recent threat so there are still things unfolding that make me very anxious for the next book in the series. As the action plot is being concluded, Krysta and Etienne get a great HEA (loved the visit to Krysta's parents!).

This was a great book from a great series. I love the characters and the storyline is always interesting and makes me want more because it's just so good! I will be waiting for the next book in the series but I have and will be rereading all of the series in the future. I'd recommend this book. 2 thumbs up! :D

Girls just wanna have fun

Would you listen to Darkness Rises again? Why?

Absolutely! The story is engaging, the characters have the greatest personalities and the plot just keeps getting thicker! I've loved all the books before this one as well. It's very well written and the narrator is fantastic.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love me some Seth but, I have to say that Sheldon makes me laugh out loud.

What does Kirsten Potter bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She nails the personalities and the accents. Her inflections with the dialogue is amazing, she breathes life into an already great story and characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud a few times with their antics. Every time I start one of Dianne's books I know I will have reactions throughout

Are you the filler book for the series?

I am not going to delve too deep into this review because this book to me was a filler book. In previous books I enjoyed Etienne. He has a wonderful sense of humor and he is always joyful and happy however in this book we didn't get a lot of his personality that we seen in previous books. I don't know if it's because he is in love but he wasn't himself in this book. The fact that there was a major emphasis on Etienne, Lisette, and Richart being so close in previous books but yet the siblings really didn't interact with one another.

Krysta is a vampire hunter who is also mortal. When Etienne and Krysta meet he is saving her, or he thinks he is saving her, from vampires. Their meeting was a bit funny and I was excited for this book however it just fell flat for me. Krysta just seemed to only care about her vendetta against vampires and not realize that she is unable to do everything herself.

I understand her intentions were good but she invertedly ended up harming more people that cared about her rather than herself. I am 100% on board for a strong independent female heroine but when that heroine decides to focus on one thing and does not seem to accept that they're not invincible it kind of annoys me. She did come to the conclusion that maybe she needs to be transformed into an Immortal but it wasn't because of love or because she was dying but because of her vendetta.

When a character is so consumed by a vendetta it never ends well. She did come to the conclusion that she needs to let go of some of the pain and anger. But not before Seth lets her know that she again is a liability.

There is a traitor among the ranks of the Immortals and is one of the big issues that occur within this book. That is why I feel like this book is filler. There are some good setups for the next books however I do not believe Etienne and Krysta are going to play a big role within the series. So far the characters that have books in the series play major roles within each of the upcoming books. In some series, I have noticed there is always one book which has a couple who kind of will play a role later down the line but they tend to fade in the background and I feel as though Etienne and Krysta are that couple.

Love this Series- Good but less Exciting

First of all let me say this is one of my favorite series- so by all means a good story. My personal taste is more towards friction and a slower build up to the characters falling in love - and in this story it happened a bit too quick for my preference.

The surrounding familiar characters and continued back story with Zach, Amy and Seth kept the pot brewing. Kristen Potter in my opinion makes the entire listen come to life- she is amazing!!

I just missed the struggle and interactions that blend suspense with the dance of two coming together- perhaps I wanted more of a tango and that is just unique to my taste. If you are similar- this one may seem a tad less exciting- but still a fun continuation of a great series.

Enjoy-

AWESOME

I simply love this series. Some have compared it to Black Dagger Brotherhood, but I think that Duvall has set this series apart from all the others. Her characters are original, diverse and believable.
In this installment Etienne stumbles across Krista, a human vampire hunter. He can't keep her out of his mind and stalks her till he falls for her. It's a great story and we get plenty on the other characters as well. There's lots going on and I stayed interested and engaged the entire time.
Kristin Potter is an excellent narrator. I will give this an adults only rating and worth the cash or credit.

To many I Love you's?

Where does Darkness Rises rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Better than many

What was one of the most memorable moments of Darkness Rises?

When you find out Zack isn't the bad guy

Have you listened to any of Kirsten Potter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

yes, she is very good at character development

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out loud several times. Way to much mush in this one, didn't fit in well with the storyline. In the middle of a battle, turn to each other "I love you" really!

Any additional comments?

I really enjoy this series. It has a good plot that draws you, but the romance just did not fit in as well as the first 3 books.
