Publisher's summary

A single-parent, second-chance romance from NYT and USA Today bestselling author A.L. Jackson

Izzy Lane was everything I never deserved.

Sweet and kind.

Beautiful in a way that stole my breath.

I started crawling through her window when I was just a boy to escape the brutality of my father.

She became my best friend.

My safe haven.

The girl I’d do anything to protect.

Only what she really needed protecting from was me.

I left town when Maxon Chambers broke my heart at seventeen.

For years, he refused my calls.

It devastated me even more when he pretended we’d never existed.

Thirteen years later, I’m back with the son he doesn’t know we share.

Now, he’s grown into a man I know I should resist, but who makes my knees weak.

Sexier than sin and more tempting than ever.

A detective on the Charleston force, he lives on the outside of safety, devoted to protecting the people of his city.

But with the way he’s looking at me now? I’m pretty sure what needs protecting is my heart.

Can we mend the pieces of us? Or will the danger that ruined our pasts steal the hope of our future…

PREPARE TO BE BLOWN AWAY

Dear Amy, from the moment I received your Newsletter about the release of this, your latest book, I’ve been eagerly checking Audible’s vast and varied virtual shelves impatiently waiting for it to become available as an audiobook... and YAY IT’S FINALLY HERE. And it didn’t disappoint.. in fact it may even be your best book so far.. but then again, I do say that about all your books. You write about bleeding hearts, broken promises, shattered dreams and second chances so well. Your characters have layers, your rich storylines have depth, detail and colorful descriptions and the ebb and flow of the ever-changing emotional tides means there’s never a dull moment. You woo, wound and wow me with your wonderful wordsmith abilities, you tempt and tease me with your sexy covers and you pick the perfect partnership to breath life into your stories. This second chance love story was compelling and binge-worthy listening as Mack and Izzy struggle to get over what happened in their pasts, vanquish emotional demons, seek forgiveness, learn lessons, lay new foundations and tentatively move towards their bright new future. It was heartbreaking, deeply emotional, truly romantic, tender, touching and hauntingly beautiful.

With solid likeable characters, colorful descriptions, an emotional well-paced storyline, sweet sweet secondary characters and a few flashback chapters sprinkled in to give depth, to highlight humble childhood beginnings and to reveal what went wrong. There was pain.. and heat.. and heart.. and passion.. which shone a light on sacrifice and a pure selfless love that deserved its second chance and its HEA. And, what I also truly love about your stories are the interconnecting threads linking friends and family together from your other books who all intertwine so the listener gets that ‘comfortable’ feeling of catching up with old friends you haven’t seen for a while, hearing about and celebrating in their happy anniversaries, achievements and announcements. As we all know, good narration is the vital element with audiobooks, choosing well is crucial, and you always pick the perfect pair to bring your stories to life. Andi and Jacob WERE those characters, they bled the feels, they evoked the senses and became the heart and soul of your dual POV story.

Worth a credit? Absolutely YES.. I never doubt your abilities, never hesitate with purchases and never rate your stories less than 5 star. Congratulations.. you can be one proud mom giving us this beautiful baby.

Childhood love. 1POV. HEA. Standalone.

⚠️ minor Trigger warning may be needed spousal and child abuse.

This is a “simmering “ romance. It’s a somewhat emotional listen. The narration is on fleek. Yes. I said “fleek”. Can’t beat the Aa & Jm powerhouse. It has a sweet HEA but I’m slightly annoyed bc I don’t feel like all the villains got their dose of Karma. This is a standalone but there are more books in the “series” so I can hear about the secondary characters.

🤭 Complainer’s Comments (spoilers)

I was slightly annoyed with the made up Ideals that Mac made up as his reason for leaving Izzy. I thought Clarissa had some major dirt on Mac and Izzy, like the couple had murdered someone and Clarissa didn’t turn them in. Nope. It was bc Mac thought he wasn’t good enough for Izzy and instead of staying and protecting her from Other threats (I thought Clarissas father might have done something
to Izzy) Mac left Izzy and didn’t really tell her why.

🥰 Loved

Having a child with a disability myself, I love it when authors include characters that have some kind of mental or physical obstacle. And it was written so respectfully So thank you AL Jackson.

This book owned me!

Ms. Jackson does it every single time. She writes these incredibly real characters and I feel.like a part of the story. She completely sucks me in and I can't help but devour all her words. And Jacob Morgan is my absolute favorite male narrator. Get this series, and feel all the feels.

My favorite of this series...

Good finale to this series of books about boys born into horrible situations that grew to make something of themselves but are still haunted by their pasts and the repercussions of their actions. I love Jacob Morgan's performance of Mack - Jacob's just great anyway - but Joe Arden's performances in the first two books just seemed like a constant state of urgency, no levity or other shadings to the characters. Jacob is brilliant at showing more facets of the characters he's performing.

Andi is great as well. This is the third book I've heard her narrate with a disabled or seriously ill character and she just nails it when portraying them believably and makes you feel their struggles as well as their triumphs.

I enjoyed this series a lot, though, though some of the books - especially Ian's - seemed to have more exposition and internal monologue than was necessary. I loved that two of the three books were about childhood sweethearts finding their way back to one another as adults.

Fantastic

This was my first AL Jackson book, and I loved it. The voice actors were phenomenal. I’m looking forward to diving deeper into the ALJ catalog.

Awesome story!

I loved the ‘long lost lovers’ kind of vibe I received from this story. I also enjoyed all of the supporting characters in this book as well. I feel as though they really rounded out the book and allowed me to imagine the storyline in my head so much more. A.L. Jackson always has great supporting characters, in every single book of hers I have read. I also enjoyed the character development in the main male character. This book was amazing and I highly recommend anything A.L. Jackson!
