About the Creator

Jill Bengtsson was a stay-at-home mom for 21 years before writing her debut novel, Cake: A Love Story, which was released in 2016. She had written the book for fun after she’d read a disappointing romance novel and felt she could do better. Jill released Cake on Amazon and watched in stunned disbelief when it became a best-seller within a month…before she even told her husband and children she’d written a book. Building on her success, the Cake audiobook was nominated for an Audie Award for Best Romance in 2018 and ensured that listeners devoured other titles in the Cake series. Jill is now a full-time writer.

About the Performer

A member of the inaugural class of 20 in the Narrator Hall of Fame, Andi Arndt’s voice has been described as "welcoming," "calm," "clear," and "sublime." Listeners are known to rave that she “makes you feel all the feels”—which is exactly what you want from one of the most popular and beloved romance narrators working today. Arndt has lent her voice to hundreds of audiobook titles. She has worked both for major publishers and best-selling indie romance authors, providing her calm, cool delivery to a diverse range of titles. She also serves as Executive Producer of Lyric Audiobooks. The recipient of multiple Audie, Earphones, and Voice Arts Awards, and twice named to AudioFile Magazine's Best Voices of the Year, Andi was inducted into the Audible Narrator Hall of Fame in 2017. A few of her most notable works include narration for Kylie Scott’s Stage Dive series, Irin Carmon’s Notorious RBG, and the junior novelization of Disney’s Frozen.

Great Debut Novel

I don't write many reviews and I'm primarily a mystery reader, but I enjoyed this book so much I felt compelled to write a review to tell everyone how satisfying a read it was. It has everything - charming characters, witty dialog, interesting plot. I hope this is the first of many books from Ms. Bengtsson.

The narrators were excellent. Joe Arden is new to me, but I've always enjoyed Andi Arndt. Her work in the Stage Dive series is a must listen.

Loved It!

I enjoyed this story way more than I anticated. From all the reviews, I was expecting great, but got AWESOME! The positive reviews are spot on!

May have some spoilers:
First, Cake's well written, descriptive, has a natural flow, and great dialogue. The dialogue between the characters had more of a YA feel, but it was clever, witty, flirty, entertaining, and added to the overall appeal of the story.

Secondly, the author does an amazing job keeping the listener in suspense. It is revealed early there's a horrific past, and throughout the story, the author gives subtle hints towards the details. The dark past doesn't distract or overpower the sweet love story, but was enough to keep me in suspense, glued to my headphones and didn't leave me emotionally drained.

Lastly, while the character had an instant connect, the author did a fantastic job developing their chemistry, feelings and relationship. I love this wasn't just another "instalove" story, and you get to feel their relationship blossom.

Cake was a beautiful, captivating, and perfectly narrated. Well worth the time and credit!

Fantastic love story!

I can’t say enough great things about this audiobook story! The characters draw you in and the story is full of fun and angst. The love between two people can save them from their demons and make life beautiful again. Looking forward to more by this author. Narration was perfect.

3.5 Cake Stars

New author to me, one I will be on the lookout for more.
I enjoyed this book a lot actually.

Jake and Casey are fabulous together. I loved getting to know each of them and how they fell in love.
Jake is a rock star and Casey is a senior accounting student. Two very unlikely of people you would think would meet and hit it off. But that’s what happened.

Jake has a pretty upsetting past that isn't hidden per say but it’s not all hanging out there either and we learn about why he is so graded with himself and with letting others get to close.

Casey is an open book; she is fun and witty and doesn't let life drag her down. She is a go with the flow kind of girl. And I really liked how these two bring out that fun side. Casey's family is awesome, I loved the interaction between herself and her mother.

Here is why I didn't rate it higher, I felt the story dragged to much in some parts and skipped the parts I really wanted to learn about. I found my mind wondering and when that happens especially with an audio-book, I tend to stop and do something then I dread going back to it. But I stuck it out through the slow spots and it did pick up, but again I felt it a little choppy in the parts that mattered.

I wasn't a fan of the epilogues; sorry I wanted to know more than we learned in them. Over all I really enjoyed this book I defiantly recommend it, it fun and witty a old fashion love story for sure.

I looooved the narration! I am a fan of both narrators and loved how they brought these characters their own unique style. I will defiantly listen to more by both of these narrators.

Writer and narrators did an awesome job

Great story. Best of all, that it was not bogged down with huge amounts of sex, expletives. It soared mainly because of the the writer and narrators did a excellent job!

good listen - great narration

Any additional comments?

I really loved that there were 2 stories in one and they addressed a really horrible event in a manner that didnt downplay it. Worth a credit. There is a lot of humor in the romance which really makes the story believeable

Good book, Great narration

This is a new to me author and I will say that I will be watching for more of her books in the future. I loved Jake and Casey, their banter in the beginning of this book was so fun! I laughed a lot which is exactly what I think the perfect relationship to start out like!! Their story was sweet with a few demons but those demons didn't make this book all drama which I loved. It has a little but which I think is the prefect amount. I really enjoyed the authors writing and the only thing that I think would have made this better for me is a little more steam. They had the love and the amazing connection but I would have loved to have felt the sexual attraction throughout the book not just as the build up to them falling in love.

The narration was great, I love both of these narrators and added this book to my wishlist because of them.

What a surprise!

I expected the usual chicklit offering but this book had a lot more depth with lots of drama. I would prefer not to have the explicit sex description and not so much swearing but I'm probably in the minority there. I even had tears in my eyes at times and I'm usually not touched by emotion when reading fiction. An excellent book. Thanks very much.

Love this book 😀

What made the experience of listening to Cake the most enjoyable?

Love the interaction of the two main characters, it was well written, and really well read.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

One of the first in the book. The wedding, it was really funny. But the rest of the book was great as well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I could have I would have.

Have your cake and enjoy it!

Would you consider the audio edition of Cake to be better than the print version?

I liked the fact that this was a romance with a twist. The story moved at a nice pace, the narration was excellent and the characters were likable. Although there were dark parts in the book relating to Jake's past they were well woven into the overall story and added an edge to it rather than distracting the reader.

Disappointing 😞

I really loved the story to begin with and their love for each other is swoonworthy with little to no angst.  What makes it especially nice is that Casey, the heroine, is quite the nerdy accountant and a great foil for Jake, the rockstar; and puts him in his place when they first meet.

What didn't make sense was the mother from hell, on first meeting, who then turns out to be the angel of mercy.

Furthermore, when you start exploring the horror of Jakes background, you never do find out why he was kidnapped and what happened to Kyle, his brother.  This might come out in the rest of the series, but it felt incomplete to me.

I would have preferred to hear a more rounded account of the kidnapping, rather than the simple gruesome escape, and how he manages to survive, e.g. his after care and how he and the family were affected up until the present.

Also, once he had explained his escape to Casey it was if all was over, whereas with all trauma, although talking about it helps, it is never over, whereas in this story all was right with the world.

Then there was the surgery when we had to have just a little more unnecessary drama. Oh yawwwwn!

So I was left feeling disappointed. Such a shame!

More Cake Please!

This story was beautifully written and brilliantly narrated. I read a lot and this is the first story in a very long time where I've laughed, lived and shed tears. I was a part of Casey and Jake's love story and I think that's a sign of a gifted writer, and a very well written book, if the story 'comes to life' for the reader.
I would definitely recommend both J. Bengtsson and Cake

I loved it

I get what a few are saying about the kidnapping story been incomplete but if you read the whole series in order you get the full account from all perspectives and it all makes sense, it shows how even though it happened to jake the trauma wasn’t just his but also the wider family’s trauma and how it changed the course of all of them , I feel it’s so well written it grabs your attention and makes you want to read the other books some series all follow one line of plot but these offer so much more , you laugh cry and laugh again , narration is top notch , I just love this author and her books so much

had my reservations

when I read the summary I wasn't sure if it was too much of a love story without grit.
Boy was I wrong!!!!! I've never read this author before but I was laughing, swooning, gasping, sighing and crying.... this is one of the best stories I've listened too.
I'm a huge Meghan March and Kresley Cole fan and have read them all and even though this is vastly different and closer to Vi Keelands writing (which I'm a fan of)
I absolutely loved it. I'm going back for more.
I'm not a great lover of Joe Arden but Andi Arnt sold me.....as always and I'm glad she did as well as narrating most of the story.
the horror inflicted on the hero was heartbreaking and the heroine was created perfectly......well done J Bengstonn....you have a new fan!!!

Cake

I loved this story. One of the things that I enjoyed most was that although set in a world that few of us are likely to experience, that of fame and fortune with a flip side background story of unimaginable horror and pain, the essence of the love story was one attainable by many of us, that of two people connecting, finding something special in that connection and then working together to make it work.
My husband once wrote "I will always love you, want to bring out the highest possible good in you". I felt that the characters of Jake and Casey strove to do this for each other, Casey, not having Jake's traumatic background, leading the charge and through patience, understanding and love bringing out a deep healing in Jake
I kept waiting for the dramatic breakup before the make-up that is so often used in contemporary fiction to build suspense but was relived and pleased to see that Bengtsson chose a different tact to build that suspense in "Cake"
Both Casey and Jake were immensely likeable characters, flawed and real, ones that I connected with and wanted to triumph.
I laughted, I cried, I sat sitting on my train commute with a dorky, goofy grin, and a whole other gambit of emotions as this story unfolded. I highly recommend "Cake" to other fellow contemporary fiction readers and look forward to reading more by J Bengtsson.

3.5-4 Stars

I found the overall storyline good but felt that there is a lot of unnecessary rambling towards the second half of the book. The last few chapters of the book redeemed the storyline for me and I loved the ending.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to the story which was well narrated by Andi and Joe, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the rest of the series.
